Capture The Relic Weekend

Not a favorite of many, but here we are.

I wanted to open up a discussion about this weekend for everybody, whether you enjoy the game mode or not.

My hope is we can keep it anecdotal. "I had a match tonight and it sucked because blah blah," or "I got lucky and had a super good lobby, wish it happened more blah blah."

I didn't have work today so I got to get an early start on the long BG weekend by staying up late last night. My first game someone on my team asked "Relic or DM? I'm DM." I had just enough time to type "relic pls," before the game started. There was no further discussion on it, and the game started with a big fight between us and another team. I was pleased enough to participate in the DM activity since that other guy (and the others too,) were working really well with me. We were doing great, but the 3rd team was taking advantage and capped our relic 2 or 3 times while we were all distracted.

Someone on my team called to focus the other team and our uncommunicated Ad-lib response (solo que,) was to shift to a 2 and 2 split. We quickly caught up... And, in the very final moments, it was tied 400 all around. I decided to stay back and play a little defense while the other 3 went out hunting. I was in the process of holding 2 players at bay when my teammates got back with the other relic for the win. Our team also dominated the K/D scoreboard with things like 6-2, 8-1, 10-2 and me with 9-0 :)

In the end our cooperation was probably second-seat to just being placed on the better team... BUT... We squeezed every ounce of fun out of that game.

    I'm finally free...

Ok, so I don't hate Battlegrounds. I'm not a huge PvPer, but I can have fun. For a while.

So CTR is usually my second most hated game mode (behind DM since I play a full tank and that's just not fun to try to kill people with no damage) because it is a bit slow. But then there's one thing that the BGs got me for: there are three BG dyes that are beautiful because they're fully matte. And they all look good, but especially the red. And especially the green.

Now while you can get the red from kills in any game mode (which I found was a lot easier to get kills if I was on a DPS character, who would have thought...), and the purple from capping flags can be done in two of the five game modes, the green is only from CTR. And the other two dyes can increment from assisting, but the green is specifically from capping a relic yourself. It's absolute agony.

I didn't think I'd ever get any of the BG dyes. But definitely not the green one. Which is a shame, because there may or may not be a really awesome costume coming in the Jester's event next month that looks incredible with the BG dyes. So I decided to bite the bullet and grind the kills and get the red at least.

And then they offered us a CTR weekend.

I think I was around 20-something relics before I really started grinding kills. I had like 34 or 36 on Friday. And then it was time to capture EVERY [SNIP] RELIC I COULD. That green dye would be MINE.

I think 66 relics in just over 24 hours is rather well done.

And... I didn't hate it. I had fun with things, but one of the main reasons I don't like PvP is that I do get really worked up about it if it starts going poorly, and there were a few that were getting to me. But I also had a few matches that were absolutely amazing. So many of them went down to the wire. They tended to be really evenly matched, and there were more than a few nail-biters. Twice I ended up in a game where I got all 5 relics. Another two times I was solo queueing with a friend on stream and we ended up on the same team, so it was loads of fun to play with my friends. It almost made me remember how much I liked being able to play with my friends in BGs a few years back when I first got into them.

In all, I'm honestly really happy. I do enjoy the BG weekends, but I'll straight up admit that I went way too hard and burnt myself out, so I'm not going to do any more for a while (but now I can dye my Daedroth costume green, so it was worth it). I do wish the BG queues were easier - I tried to queue as a group with some friends and it never went anywhere until we broke group and went solo - but even that little taste of what BGs were before was fun.

I totally will go back in the next time we have a weekend. Maybe not doing matches back-to-back-to-back until I want to cry, but definitely more than just "one for the endeavor and done."

Probably an unpopular opinion in these forums, but I always do what it takes to win the match, until things look completely pointless / hopeless. I do this as a courtesy to, and out of consideration for others in my team. Not everybody is a hardcore battleground player, and I'm sure some of them are just trying to get their dailies done.

@tomofhyrule that was a good little story. I was rooting for you while I read it, lol, "please have gotten some dyes out of this weekend." I'm very glad you did. 66 relics in 24 hours?? Someone give this man a trophy!

I pretty much always do what it takes to win also. I'm not quite as selfless as you-- I really just do it for myself. I like to win, and I don't mind any of the game modes. I'll run relics, return relics, sit there and defend... Whatever seems needed from one moment to another.

Kinda funny (to me,) I've been in a lot of arguments about whether or not obj modes are any good. Obviously a lot of people don't like them. I take so many clips of my own play because I like to show my wife a couple every night. My wife thinks Chaosball is the most fun to watch. I'm starting to think Capture the Relic is MY favorite. Probably the two most hated modes, lol. Few things in this game are as exciting to me as holding an enemy relic, carrying it into the enemies spawn to try and fight to get your own relic back. Always feels very risky exciting and fun to me.

Slight change of topic to shout out a player... @StarOfElyon is a very good player I see a lot in solo que high mmr and sometimes here on the forums. Plays a stout necro and does pretty well.

I've seen him/her even more frequently lately during this "weekend." When StarofElyon is on your team you know you're good to go on offense because Star is a DEVOTED and CAPABLE defender. Shout-out for doing the dirty work Star-- you're a good team player.

I like CTR too. CTR and Domination are the 2 match types that are best played when you strategically split your group up, which I appreciate. The 4v4v4 groups clashing in the middle of the map can be tedious and exhausting, which I'm not always in the mood for.

I think the non-DM matches are fun, but do feel a little half-baked. Chaosball, for instance, feels like a dumbed-down version of SWTOR's Hutball matches, where you needed to get the ball to the opposing team's goal to score. You could pass the ball, and intercept passes. Back in the day, we would have 8v8 ranked matches, and Hutball was always the most intense and required the most strategy.

Another match type I miss from that game is one where each team took turns attacking and defending 2 doors. The attacking team's job was to plant a bomb on one of the doors to make it to the next area, which had the next set of doors. Once planted, it was possible to diffuse a bomb, so you'd have to be careful. You could choose to use brute force tactics and blow the other team away, then plant the bomb before they could respawn and interrupt, or you could finesse it instead and have one person plant on the second door while the rest create a diversion on the other. Well coordinated teams could get through all the doors quickly and it would always keep me on the edge of my seat.

I think I like Crazy King better than domination-- that first big fight for the flag is fun. You find out quickly what the pecking order is and how your team needs to proceed going forward. But I like Domination too-- and I agree that the splitting up is nice.

I can see where in group que DM is kinda the ultimate proving ground, but without that kind of coordination and expectation the randomness of solo que is complimented by having a variety of goals and places to be. I do love a good deathmatch but, sadly, I think my love for it is tied to the fact that it is rare. I wish it wasn't so rare, but I enjoyed DM weekend less than I'm enjoying this one. If that makes sense.

Striking up nice 2v2s or 2v3v2s or 1v2s organically while on your way to an objective is what I like.

The game kicked me out several times for spamming during battleground matches this weekend. I wasn't spamming. If you were in a match with me and, I disappeared, I didn't abandon you. :disappointed: This was so embarrassing. The times that I didn't get kicked, I enjoyed the matches.

Thanks for the shoutout. Beats getting those "you're trash" and "uninstall the game" whispers I've been getting for years. lol Capture the relic is the only game besides deathmatch that I can enjoy. Capturing flags and the chaos ball are MISERABLE so I can hardly stand playing those objectives.

But about your compliment, I think your praise is a tad bit high. My characters aren't really built to fight multiple people so I often get folded up when I'm outnumbered. I could probably do better if I actually used proc sets. At least it's easier to play hybrids now so that's not as much of an excuse as it used to be for why my builds aren't stronger. My magplar is my only "pure build" but I rarely play that anymore. My hybrid bow sorc is the weakest out of all my characters so if you see me on that character, don't be surprised to see me getting my butt handed to me. Anyway, back to the game modes I'm really bad at again. lol

Last night we had 2 teams of 4 and a team of 3 coordinating to get into a match together for a premade (obviously dm) fight.
The 12th person who joined is an awful person, who sells pillar of nirn daggers and tried to shut down a competitor's business by "buying" a dagger from the competitor (my friend) and then leaving group after the last boss (so the dagger would bind to my friend) and blocking my friend.
This individual used to be a member in our bg guild but was exiled after being exposed for his disgusting behavior, as well as for making a troll speed tank on weekends like this and trying to end each match in sub 3 minutes.
Anyway, this horrible person tried to do the same in our game where 11/12 people were coordinating to do a premade deathmatch. So we had to stop the fight, and all focus him down the whole game.
This was beyond stupid and a complete waste of time.

I enjoy all BG modes, i just think there should be more of a incentive to play the objective to stop team mates from doing their own thing, I think the issue is people click random BG - I know they're all capture the rellic atm but this problem isnt unique to this event.

It does however make capturing the rellic pretty easy most of the time, if you just decide to ignore combat for a sec and go focus the rellic - chances are you'll get it.

I can win 90% of capture the rellic maps if i put my mind to it.

Suxs that the achievement for the dye only gets credited if YOU capture the relic.... I perfer to come in as a healer, which means that I almost never get to capture the relic. They really need to update BGs.

@gariondavey Eesh what a punk. Never understood drama to that extent. I've been in guilds where people got kicked and there was some chat commotion for an hour or two, but thankfully I've never personally been a part of it. Or "professionally." Since I only really join pvp guilds I eventually tend to get made an officer, but thankfully it's only like an honorary recognition of being a decent player-- they never ask me to DO anything lol. And the real problem is there just isn't much you can do anyway.

@StarOfElyon I was a long-time Ravenwatch player and I'd just bring those builds into BGs because I'm lazy. Non-proc builds do fine, sorta, but of course you'd always do better with maras or rallying cry or whatever. I respect the desire to play without though. I played without procs for years-- only really changed around U35. Just needed something new. BGs aren't that new, but I've been playing in Blackreach also.

Anyway... No, the praise isn't too much. I see you struggle sometimes-- I'm sure you've seen me struggle sometimes. I also know I've been trying to pick up a relic that you and maybe someone else was defending and had to give up and try the other side of the map. Also I've been running a relic back and found that our relic was only still there because you were keeping the enemies tied up. A lot of people just seem to get bored easy and won't play defense even if nobody else is doing it. It's like tanking in PvE... It's just rare... And therefore you come to appreciate good ones.

@Dayhjawk yeah I mean you could pick up a relic if you wanted but as a healer you probably just don't find yourself in situations like that. That is too bad. They do need to redo the medal system I think... It's weird that you get 100 points per assist but none per kill, for example. And somehow defenders should be rewarded. Like you only score points for letting them pick it up and them killing them. But if you're real good then they never pick it up. The game should recognize your proximity to your own relic and give you credit for fighting inside that area for prolonged periods of time. Whether you get kills or not.

@ nobody BUT... All that being said, probably my favorite BG weekend yet. It brings more people into the que system almost like a mini Midyear Mayhem. It seems to muddy up the mmr system a bit and show you new people. Most of whom were good players, but maybe not quite as good as those 20 sweats we see day in and day out. I don't mind admitting I was performing much better than normal, and very consistently so. I also think people were doing a good job of playing the mode for what it was. Decent focus on the objective + willingness to fight = fun times.

Hmm. Well I don't really agree with that, but I do agree other contributing teammates need to be recognized for their efforts.

The reason I don't agree is because I like having two "ranking" systems. We all understand how the team rankings work-- you come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd-- and if it isn't 3rd then you're rewarded. You're rewarded for how your team did.

But if you do happen to come in 3rd... The medal system is a nice consolation prize. You can look at it... Everybody can look at it... And see what YOU did. Hey, you went 6-6 and captured 1 relic. Not bad.

And I guess this is pretty, uh, vain to a certain extent. But PvP is a competition, so feeling like you did well when you did well IS part of it. And the ability to be on the losing team but be the highest scoring player at the same time is pretty awesome.

to get the achievement you have to capture 100 relics.. keyword, "YOU"... the game ends when someone captures 5 i believe. So at most you are looking at getting 5 pts towards the achievement, if it takes your group not you. So 20 matchs and your done, but lets be realistic, your not going to get 5 every game. One team will but probably not yours. So probably get 1-3 pts towards that achievement per game. so around 30ish games and your done.

also the reward for the achievement i am talking about is a dye..... a dye... i have to capture 100 relics, to get a dye..... if i'm a healer... chances are next to 0.

Well I agree that the requirement seems too difficult for the reward. But the problem here is getting credit for things other people do. Like-- okay, so maybe YOU are in the thick of the fight, helping teammates pick up relics and escorting them safely back. In which case I would maybe agree you deserve credit. But what about the guy off over there NOT doing anything to help at all? He definitely should not get credit, right? So it may be hard to draw the line... And it may be harder still to figure out a way of coding it.

Or let me put it to you another way. As a healer there are achievements that will be hard for you to get. As a brawler dps there are achievements I probably won't get. For example, isn't there a medal for healing more than 10k in a deathmatch? And isn't there a medal for healing the person carrying the Chaosball? I don't know if there are any achievements linked to these but let's pretend there are. Should I get credit every time you heal someone for 10k? Should I get a special dye for it?

Or... If we're on the same team and I capture 4 relics, resulting in YOU getting the dye you want because you got credit for my captures... Should I get the dye also? Because we're a team?

Not to derail the current conversation but I have something I wanted to bring up and this is probably the place:

Is there a glitch with werewolves picking up relics? I'm aware that if you use an immovable potion you can't be interrupted (I guess this is how some people do it-- I wouldn't know because it's not how I do it,) and this seems fair to a certain extent, although lame at times.

But over this weekend I noticed something else. Werewolves were picking up relics and they didn't even go through the animation. In fact, once, this werewolf was standing right in front of me and I didn't even try to stop him because he was ACTIVELY LIGHT ATTACKING the relic. I had no idea what he was doing, and hadn't really made up my mind yet how I was going to proceed. Half a second later he's running away with the relic.

And there were other times, less obvious, but similar... And always a werewolf. Any thoughts?

I haven't played werewolf so I have no idea.

Idk, i just feel like since you enter BGs and are placed into groups, that the achievements so be group based gains, not invidiuals gains. Crydrill is fine.. cuz you are go solo or group, but BGs are group based.
