I think it takes me 6 or 7 base areas collecting books, each time you get an area set or some type of other set it gives a bonus boost in the xp towards max. I have found it slightly less mindnumbing doing shards at the same time thereby getting a load of skill points at the same time.

I collect the easiest ones to grab and do the mages guild questline until completion, then go finish by collections.

There is no quickly for Mages Guild.

Get a guide and collect all books in 5-10 zones and you’ll be fine. Will still take hours to finish though.

    Fun Facts:
It takes 1380 Mages Guild Reputation points to reach Mages Guild Rank 10, and it is possible to earn 1365 Mages Guild by collecting all Lorebooks within your home alliance territories, Coldharbour and Cyrodiil. The remaining 15 Mages Guild Reputation must come from dailies or the zone collections of the other alliance areas.

    Source: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Mages_Guild

If you have access to the mages guild dailies, you can do 15 dailies a day to earn 150 reputation points a day. This will take 9.5 days to max out the skill line but you will earn extra gold, loot some draugr motifs, and boost your companions mages skill line.

I have a second account that I park dailies on. When I want to farm the dailies, I move the 2nd account alts to the location and cycle through them quite quickly.

Playing on PC with Lorebooks or Map Pins addon is the only way I know ... I didn't know about the dailies. Each unique book comes in a cluster of 3 or 4 in the same area. Some are in houses or otherwise hard to find quickly. In that case, move on to another copy of the same book closeby. Doing lorebooks and skyshards together makes sense, possibly Psijic as well. On the other hand half the skyshards take you into delves and some of the Psijic quests send you on a journey following lights. The overlap isn't perfect.

The fastest way to level up mage skill line?

A fast horse (if you havent unlocked all wayshrines but even then a fast Horse helps)!

The first passive in the aliance war - assault skill line increases horse speed by 30% (1 point is enough, a second point wont increase the speed further).

The absolute fastest way is to break out the credit card but i think only if you've already done it

Fast mount, major gallop passive, cp for fast riding and out of combat movement star. Pick the books that are in easy places, each book have 4 possible locations on the map (you can see it with addon if on PC). Make sure you pick all from entire zone, there is a reputation bonus for that. In about 6-7 zones you should have them all.

If your mount speed is low, ask a friend/guildie that have that 2-person horse to drive you around.

I think a fast horse competes with perma-cloak speed builds, Darloc Brae crouch builds, perhaps even Streak builds. The benefit of stealth is avoiding aggro. You can kill everything, of course, but some NPCs stun you or otherwise waste your time. Might even try a vamp stage 4 sprinting build for invisibility, or that mythic that allows you to pass through NPCs. There's probably not much in it, but if I had a lot of lorebooks to find, I'd probably explore those options just for fun.

In this case a fast horse should be better, because walk speed is capped at 200% but on a horse you can be faster than that ( https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/566038/movement-and-mounted-speed-caps-explained ). Also for collection all books you sometimes need to travel big distances and dont have to unmount / mount that often, especially if you havent unlocked all wayshrines. So all in all you can be almost 50% quicker this way.

But For general farming (nodes), speed builds can outperform because farming nodes are usually not far away to each other and you have to mount / unmount very often.

Unfortunately collecting books is um... the fastest way. You can technically also do daily quest, but that is actually even slower lol.

I would advise some map marker addon (if you are on pc) and pick up books that are closest to wayshrines or in smaller zones.

The distribution of the books is key.

    1. Stick to one Alliance's base 5 zones first. If you bounce around between between say the first zones of the 3 Alliances, they share a bunch of books.
    2. Coldharbor is the next zone to tackle. You should have all you need by then. If not visit the other Alliances or maybe some DLC zones to grab the few you need.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

the 2 sources of xp for mages guild are the mages guild daily quest (+10 guild xp) and lorebooks

lorebooks are far faster, at least if your on PC with the lorebooks addon lol

there are several different mages guild quests, but the trouble is finding enough people to share all of them each day
