Do you want more earnable cosmetics or easier earnable cosmetics?

In Rich Lambert's recent interview, he answered this question: Will there be more earnable cosmetics (like skins) through content in Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom? The community is hoping to get them.

Rich Lambert: "I would love to dig into that because we do have that already. Like, there are skins for completing dungeons. There is a mount that you can get for completing the hardest of the child's [sic] things.

"There's all kinds of cosmetics that we put into the game. My question to them would be if they just want skins to be easier to get or if they want more skins. I think last year alone, there were over 200 different cosmetics that you could go and grind for and earn in the game. That would be a question I would love to have answered."

How would you answer Rich Lambert's question?

Skins? No, I strongly dislike most of them for being, IMHO, ugly and looking out-of-place in Tamriel. Body art I find generally more lore- and character-friendly but there are only a few body and face markings I use, especially since those share slots with makeup, fur/scale patterns, and scars.

I do like the idea of lore-appropriate costumes, adornments, mounts, and furnishings earnable in the game, ideally at varying level of challenge. I like things that require completing a questline or dungeon or collection, nothing ridiculously grindy like some costume from Blackwood (thankfully for me it was nothing I liked) or RNG on top of RNG (ie., Ancient Daedric motif). I enjoy collecting motifs from dungeons though — those are good cosmetic rewards IMO.

Gonna have to go with both. More cosmetics in general would be great, but they can't keep shoving the good ones behind content that like 1% of the player base even touches.

I did pick easier mostly because the public dungeons are not interesting enough to run through looking for 25/50 pieces of something with an incredibly low drop rate, but I would also like both. Like I understand its an MMO, but come on.

I don't care about skins, polymorphs, etc. I'm perfectly happy to spend the crowns from my sub (or SoE) on the cosmetics I do want,.

So I don't really have any interest in Rich's question. I'm not interested in grinds. And I'm not interested in either "more or easier". I'm really picky about cosmetics - there's a LOT of dreck in the CS, and the stuff available "in game" isn't really available to me, not to mention it misses me (by and large) by about the distance from earth to the sun.

    More earnable cosmetics
I was going to put together a lengthy post on this tomorrow, but will touch briefly on this here.

I personally want to see the numbers of what’s a timed deal vs grinding motifs. His whole comment comes across as dismissive towards some really valuable feedback. Ultimately, it should not take me grinding HM vet dungeons or dealing with months of doing dailies for a chance to get cosmetics that are conveniently on sale.

I wish they did it like Rift. Any armor or cosmetics that you pick up goes into your wardrobe to wear. It's so simple but Zos have to do everything annoyingly. It's the way they do the little things that are so simple in other MMOs that bug me about the game.

This is another example of how you can’t trust what they say.

I would love to know the % of total costumes and mounts that are earnable in game. It’s not a lot.

Armor skins sure, most of those are in game, but there are still plenty of cash shop exclusive skins and packs, and those are the good looking ones (yes subjective I know)

I suspect he's counting each of the style pages in a book as one cosmetic....

Anyway. I'd like to see both. I want more stuff in hard achievements. But I also want more stuff in easier achievements that aren't so grindy. There is a couple behind the quests, but the rest of them are often huge grinds and some of them are even layered behind multiple areas of RNG.

The treasure map cosmetics are a huge example of that. They are awful. You have no way to target farm the map you want and then once you get the map that you want, you have to hope it's for the thing you want. And for motifs on top of that you then have to hope it's not a duplicate. It's truly awful.

I would love to see more basic housing items be obtainable through vendors, quests, etc.

Housing is another area where I'd like them to ease up on us at how difficult it is furnish.

The house is expensive. The materials are expensive and grindy to get. The plans are expensive and grindy to get. What about some plans that AREN'T a grind to get? What about making furnishing materials abundant since the plans and houses are already expensive?

I don't want to have to kill the same world boss everyday for 90 days just to get a window.

More AND easier to earn cosmetics. We desperately need more nice dyes. I think only 5% of the dyes we get are actually appealing, and dyeing is further complicated by the fact that some materials are extremely difficult to dye well.

And I enthusiastically second spartaxoxo's post about housing items. Housing in ESO is almost as unattainable as housing IRL, which is depressing.

Was this in question? We want more, and we want it easier to obtain. Pretty sure I am not psychic.

    Edit:

Now that I see what Rich said, I he seemed to think these were two competing issues. Both should be in play with how they design all of this. There should be some things that are very easy to obtain and some that should be reserved for the players that put the time and effort in to clear the most challenging on HM with a no-death speed run.

More and more easily earned. Specifically mounts.

I couldn’t find a total number so I counted on the uesp page and came to 440 mounts that exist.

Out of those, I believe there are 7 that are permanently available and can be directly earned in-game (so excluding seals of endeavor).

    3 horses
1 ebon Dwarven wolf from antiquities
    3 veteran trial challenger mounts

    Did I forget any?

If not, that means that roughly 1.6% of mounts can be directly earned in the game.

    Easier earnable cosmetics
Easier as in no RNG component, so no finding, 5 leads or have to farm 50 pieces you then need to combine, you just do what is needed to unlock it and it unlocks the cosmetics in your collections.

Maybe even have multiple ways to unlock the same item, so that people that hate some activities can still get the unlocks via another method, example having a PVP method to unlock them and a bunch of PVE ways to unlock them that vary in difficulty for different player skill levels.

You might say then people will just use the easiest method to get the cosmetic and move on, well in addition to the cosmetic provide a secondary reward based on the difficulty, say you get a skin from a trial vet hard mode, it gives you a million gold, a lump sum of seals of endeavour, if you get the same skin from doing something in a public dungeon you only get the skin no extra's.

For the especially lazy and impatient have a vendor that sells each of the cosmetic items for 100K gold to act as a gold sink.

    Both.

Crown Store has tons of cosmetics, but these are either for money, or for the Seals of Endeavor, which are easy, but very slow to accumulate.
Why not to offer "regional" mounts at stables for gold if player had completed all of the zone achievements (like guars in Vvardenfell, quasigriffs in Summerset, wolves in Western Skyrim, camels in N.Elsweyr, durzogs in Blackwood and velva in Deadlands),
The game really needs hair dying and purchasing hair styles for gold, which can be integrated into Dye/Outfit stations,
if we can visit barbershop and use hair dyes in the real life, why that is so complicated in a game?
Some of CS costumes and skins could also be added to Achievements Vendors

Hardcore achievements rewards are to be very recognizeable (the example is WoW - just noticing players character costume can give the idea if they are PVP pros or Achievement collector, or endgame PVE player).

TL/DR; ESO has a lot of cosmtics, but most of these are behind a paywall. sad.

I think it needs a different approach:

    1) Clearer communication on what is available and where. I know there are a lot of cosmetic rewards in the game, and I know I can see some of them in the relevant menus, but I don't think that's all of them. If I like a specific motif or outfit piece I have no idea where to find it without going to 3rd party sites.

    2) More variety of cosmetic rewards in the game. It seems like the majority of dyes, motifs and outfit styles are in-game rewards while the majority of mounts, costumes, head and body markings are in the crown store. I think skins are more evenly split, but I never use them so I'm not sure. It would be better if there was a roughly even mix of all cosmetic types in both.

    3) Less reliance on grinding and RNG for in-game rewards. I know it's an easy way for developers to make 'repeatable' content but it gets very boring very quickly and I'm sure I'm not the only one who just won't bother if the only way to get something I like is to keep doing the same activity over and over and hope I eventually get lucky. Also I don't think it's a good thing if players finally achieve their goal and just feel relieved that they never, ever have to repeat the same damn thing ever again. Surely the ideal should be that we're left feeling like it was fun and we'd like to find something else in the game that offers a similar experience.

I’d argue that senche is not earnable, only winnable. Plus you have to do something outside of the game to even have a chance at that.

I don't really have any interest in cosmetics, but I do think there needs to be a balanced approach to how they are earned ingame or bought through Crowns, endeavours and other means. As to how that balance is at the moment, I can't say because of my lack of interest in them.

They also need to learn where to put what. Save titles for the over the top impossible-for-normal-people achievements, make cosmetics actually obtainable. If they want to get the average person involved in trials, they need to see something they want that's actually attainable. Also, I'd like to see more things like summerset with unique outfit styles coming from quest completion.

And this. After all my time in that public dungeon, I’ve only got seven scaly cloth scraps. This made me lose interest in getting the Thalfey Debutante Gown a long time ago. And frankly, with the price those scaly cloth scraps fetch on the guild traders, I would feel awful converting 50 of them to the robe now. I think it was a bad decision to switch from needing 10 items to needing 50 just for the sake of grinding.
