About the same thing happened to me recently, I had no idea about the cost of Mudcrab Chitin all this time and never even noticed it until I just ran out. To get the quest done quickly I just thought I’d buy 3 at the trader and was shocked to see how much gold I must have lost over the course of a very long time when I could have been selling the Chitin instead of giving it to an npc. I thought, “ What’s the point of doing this one?”

Sorry to tag again @ZOS_Kevin I know you guys are always busy, but is this something that might be considered?

The Mudcrab chitin isn’t even used in the potion itself so could it be changed to something else or be added to the rewards container for doing the daily writ?

We have the same problem with violet coprinus: just as with mudcrab chitin, the cost of giving away 3 of these to finish the writ makes the writ payment not very worthwhile, even considering the contents of the writ reward box. I think I'll just skip doing the alchemy writs from now on, and just do the other 6. I'll miss out on the alchemy surveys.

I often skip the Mudrab writs. I do kill any mudcrabs I see, but the drop rate is poor and I never feel like actually farming them. So I agree that it would be nice if it were removed from the writ requirements, or be included in the reward pool from the writs.

I also think it would make sense for there to be an alchemy hireling :)

    "We" as in "you"?
While it's not as easy to come by as chitin, there is still plenty out there - funny enough, most people don't care to pick up this stuff and just run by. And later complain, that they don't have enough of ingredients xyz - obviously because thy didn't bother picking it up before.

Maybe the pool of items that get chosen as the hand in should be bigger. As in from all the items that get used at your skill level.
I guess 'special' items like Dragon Blood, Rheum etc would be excluded too.

I too kill every mudcrab I see, also pick up every Violet Coprinus. Frequently run out, but just suck it up and buy it if I have to.

I pick up every violet coprinus I see. I still run low. It's a rare node, and it's used heavily for top level alchemy daily writs.

I even skipped those daily writs during the Anniversary Event. I looked at the so-called “rewards” I was getting from other boxes and decided even then it wasn’t worth it.

Mudcrabs all over Tamriel need to be more paranoid.

Our thoughts go out to Veesk-Olan and Snips.

No. I meant exactly what I typed. Many forum members have also had trouble farming violet coprinus, because as kringled_1 just said, it's rare. As for your comment about people not bothering to farm it, the same could be applied to mudcrabs. The first time I realised I needed a steady supply of mudcrab chitin and violet coprinus, I farmed enough of both to build up the supply.

Mudcrab Chitin differs from the other ingredients in not dropping from each node. You have to harvest multiple mudcrabs to get a chitin. Its absence from the reward boxes adds to the writs being a disproportionate drain.

On the other hand, because the daily writs are cyclical, you can predict your need.for any ingredient, and farm to suit. At least the source is not a rare one.

Why should we have to go to such lengths to farm this one ingredient?

Alchemical plants and mushrooms can be found throughout all of the zones everywhere and we get those in the rewards boxes, but not mudcrab chitin. Mudcrabs are only found along the shore and you said yourself that the drop rate for chitin is low.

I believe this is a legitimate request, but there is still no official response.

Yes, there are more game-breaking bugs, but this is an easy one to do that they could check that box off as completed and make people happy.
