I have Discord. I decide to get on ESO Discord. I google it, get the site and the Invite. It now has the ESO logo as an option. However...
The ESO Discord Welcome tells me ' must verify phone before I'm allowed to send message. ' OK. I verify the phone. It tells me this discord is being used by that phone number already. And I have to remove my Discord from that phone number if I want ESO to use that number as verification and allow me to post on ESO Discord. What kind of rediculous nonsense is this?

    1) As far as I can tell the ESO discord is just a compilation of dev messages and links so there's no reason to verify for it, since there's no discussion there, only readable information.

    2) While the verification requirement is something the ZOS mods there have chosen, they are not the ones verifying your number, discord is.

    3) That message means that that phone number has already been used to verify a different discord account. Maybe it's a new number and someone had it before and used it, or maybe you used it for another discord account. Maybe discord sucks. In any case, this is a discord issue, this might help: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413460214807-How-to-Remove-a-Phone-Number

Without getting too deep into the telco industry, tldr if no other mistake has been made on your part (e.g. previously registered that # on discord and forgot) -

All telcos have some sort of aging standard, but not all are equal (or applied if mistake is made).

Few ppl get a brand ‘new’ number when obtaining new phone. You actually get a previously issued number that was returned to that telco pool when prior owner quit.

That number is supposed to be aged for XX to XXX days. At AT&T the aging protocol can range from 90-180 days depending on classification (domestic, business, etc pools)

It’s entirely possible and probable if you’re 100% sure you did not mistakenly already register with discord that prior owner did. Or, also possible that someone registered with similar #, made typo, and used your number, never got verification b/c they input wrong # but discord still kept in their registry.

Either scenario is prob what is happening to you if you are sure is not your own mistake. Someone mistakenly used my email address to register with Safeway grocery delivery service, never verified bc they couldn’t, I keep getting their shopping receipts and order confirmations to my email but Safeway refuses to remove my email b/c despite me able to 100% verify is my address b/c they say orders are successfully delivered and paid.

So prob similar at discord, once phone # is registered, they prob don’t trim or re-verify old ones. If you’ve have that # for years, then I’d say scenario#2 is most likely, someone registered your number, never verified, but discord never dumped #s b/c their stats look better with more registered #s
