Tri Focus dealing over 8k a hit a ravenwatch

Can anyone explain to me how I could be taking 8k damage from "Tri Focus" in the ravenwatch campaign. No CP, No Procs, the opponent is not the emperor. I have 28k resists, 31k if my wife buffed me with minor resolve. I'm genuinely trying to understand how it's possible, or what exactly I'm being hit with.

Looks like you were near an NPC that was targeted by someone who used a lightning staff heavy attack build. The initial damage is calculated on the NPC that all the modifiers work on and then the Tri focus passive causes it to hit anything nearby, including human players, for 100% of that buffed amount.

Thanks, I thought of this after posting this and suspected it might be the case. I'm a little out of touch with the game because I am working so much. Thank you for the clarification.

Empower works on NPCs and player pets and they only have 9k resist.

In battlegrounds I target the Sorc bird, Engine Guardian etc and frequently hit all nearby enemies for 8-10k. You can easily reach 2-3m damage done in a battleground this way.

Pretty funny coming from an Oakensoul heavy attack build meant for PvE.

Cyrodiil guards have significantly more armor than 9k, but I understand your point. :p

I feel like I've been seeing a lot more lightning heavy attacks in PvP these days, both in Cyrodiil and especially in BGs. Would you mind sharing what setup you're using for something like this? Is it really just the straight up PvE versions (which I'm very familiar with)? Or are folks in PvP adjusting it somehow? I just can't wrap my head around those builds being strong enough to survive... or that they are quite narrowed in their role in PvP. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

It's basically the PvE Oakensoul Heavy attack build for Sorc but swap out a few things.

Storm Master, Sergeant's Mail (all divines)
    Sharpened trait instead of Precise
The Lover mundus instead of The Thief
Orzorga's Smoked Bear Haunch (or Jewels of Misrule) instead of Artaeum Pickled Fish Bowl
1pc Valkyn Skoria medium instead of 1pc Slimecraw medium

    Crystal Weapon
    Resolving Vigor
    Race Against Time
    Streak / Ball Lightning
    Dark Deal
    Ice Comet

The damage is low until you 1) get 4 stacks of Sergeant's Mail, and 2) heavy attack a player pet, and 3) have Ice Comet up

You will have 25k health and very fragile but stay alive with lots of dodge rolls, streaking, and cc immunity with Race Against Time. Most Battlegrounds I only die once or twice and get anywhere from as low as 3 or 4 kills all the way up to 15 or 20 kills on the high end. When you get lots of kills it's almost always a burst combo with Ice Comet + Tri Focus aoe damage, especially if you're heavy attacking a player pet.

The damage will feel weak but the Battleground ends and you somehow have 10 kills. It's also very funny when you heavy attack a player and get a kill because they just died to a 1-bar PvE Heavy Attack build

This build makes me laugh. It's bad but also randomly strong. I play it as a joke and genuinely have a better time than if I'm on one of my serious PvP builds.

Also if your primary tactic is Tri Focus from player pets and npcs then you can build for crit and not penetration.

    They don't have crit resist.

I meant player pets have 9k resist. The Sorc bird is a joke and dies in 2 hits. The guards are stronger yes but I wonder if that's a damage reduction buff because they seem to absorb more damage than the 18.2k resist like trial bosses have.

You likely aren't seeing it in BGs (at least not effectively) as the new version of this build needs to hit players with the Tri-Focus passive, and not the actual heavy attack. With the nerfs to heavy attack sets (they only function against mobs) the only way to pull huge damage against players is by wearing those PvE heavy attack sets and hitting a mob (e.g., Cyrodiil guards, IC mobs or boss). It's essentially the same (or at least similar) heavy attack setup its always been but instead of directly targeting players you have to target mobs near players.

The guy hitting you with Tri Focus is a Magblade. So no OakenSorc excuses. 🤯🤣
If anyone here says: OH! But, PVP! I swear I'll ...

Thank you for the valuable input and respectfully recommend to discuss that aspect of ESO on the PVP forum.
