New Class and Old Gen Console Support

I'm wondering if support for old gen consoles (Xbox One and PS4) will be dropped for this new class? We were once told that the older consoles simply couldn't handle any new animations. If they will continue to be supported will the performance of the game be impacted? I'm guessing something will have to be sacrificed in order to make this work on the old gen consoles (if they continue to get support).

I mean.... the class doesn't actually have any crazy new animations from what was shown, just mainly VFX.... and the VFX don't even look that great so I doubt they'll break consoles anymore than they already are.

Nah, they can pull it off. That teleport animation probably acts just like chains or that warden skill that ports enemies to you.

However, I wouldn’t be surprised if 2023 started to see some last gen support going away from other developers.

    Time to upgrade.

Well maybe they freed some space with the server work?

It looked like an excuse and not the actual reason from from the start tbh.

I'm assuming the reason they are releasing a new class this year (as well as pushing whitestrake's back to right after the new hardware is supposed to be live) is because they are confident that the new hardware and re-architecturing of the servers will stabilize the game enough to allow it to run solidly.

I think it would be a bad look to abandon the people who were playing/supporting the game originally, they would likely lose a lot of players. NG consoles aren't exactly cheap, and many can't afford/source them.

The new hardware won't even be for consoles. PC EU is coming up, after that it'll likely be towards end of year or later that consoles will get new hardware.

The idea that old hardware was preventing a new class was always idiotic.

Old consoles are always the reason they can't do something, until they decide to do something.

The server would have no impact on this. Imagine you had a weak PC from 2008 or something. It probably cannot run ESO in a playable state. Over time the game has grown and has become more demanding on hardware. Old consoles were pretty weak when they launched and they are super weak now compared to modern hardware. There will be a point where they will be unable to run ESO as the game continues to grow.

Basically, this is a client-side issue and the server has little impact on it. Even in Elesweyr, Matt Firor said they had to do a lot of work on the engine in order to keep old consoles supported with the addition of the Necromancer. That same year (2019) performance took a massive turn for the worst on all platforms. Now I don't play on old consoles anymore, but my concern is that everyone's performance will worsen as it did in 2019 due to modifying the engine in order to keep old consoles supported.

If the PS4 and Xbox One are holding back the game it wouldn't surprise me if PC players with old PCs are at least as much of a factor.

Guild Wars 2 is in the process of upgrading to DX11 (no that's not a typo, I do mean 11, the one that came out about 12 years ago) and there's a bunch of people worrying that their PC isn't compatible and won't be able to run the game when that happens.

I think some of that is misunderstandings - people don't realise how old and well established DX11 is and just assume any upgrade will affect them, but that's still because they're using older and/or lower end PCs (often a mix of both) because unlike console users who are prompted to upgrade every 5 years or so because newer games aren't available on older consoles a lot of PC users will keep using the same machine until it breaks entirely or they're otherwise forced to upgrade.

That was a guess from someone that has only very basic knowledge on computer stuff thank for the clarification
