QOL Suggestion: Add a slider to set how fast "w" is, just found out console controllers can..

winterscrolls229prerb18_ESO
Today i learned that in fact, ESO isn't trying to be a homage to mid 90's first person shooters from id software with the seemingly insane walking speed. I plugged in an xbox controller to pc for the first time today.. and found the game movement suddenly isn't crazy anymore. Random data:

I returned again this week because of the new skimpy outfit and to play the next chapter in my backlog. From playing other games and mmo's during months off from eso.. the default moment speed ("run") on pc is no longer bearable in 2023. It feels really dated, and scattered. Worse, its so fast that it leaves the impression of almost tearing the world away from you as you go through it. You try to absorb details of the world, but its torn away by being replaced in that 1/2 a second to 1 second quicker than it should be. Every movement is tearing you out of the world.

Movement speed is matched to the analogue stick on the console controller. This had me palpitating for a bit, because i've wanted to solve this for so long on pc, haven't been able to, and its been attacking me every time i play. I had to handwave it by assuming the developers were fans of 90's fps games and bethesda owned id software so john carmac got involved and told everyone players like fast fps (even though skyrim isnt broken...). And today i find out no it wasn't that malicious, its simply eso was built for consoles... really?

I fully appreciate, praise, love and cheer at the recent settings of being able to turn off combat music, and set the character selection music as well. These are the best changes zos has made for me the solo player in many years (the last one being "teleport to outside house", seriously thats all ive noticed). So here's another one.. add a slider for "w" somewhere. Set it to full by default, but allow me to set it where i want to, and deal with the consequences. Or even just have a dropdown with forward == "walk / JOG / run".

Another even simpler option would be to turn the walk / run toggle into a walk / JOG / run toggle, with jog set by developers or a manual slider.. jog speed. Which offers the speed range available from the console analogue stick.

I guess im going to learn the xbox controller now, because only run / walk has always been broken and suffered to me. If you're serious about quality of life in q3 2023... thanks for considering.

Movement speed is matched to the analogue stick on the console controller.

Which has been true for virtually every game in the last 10+ years. Controller users get to walk at various speeds (or steer their cars smoothly), keyboard users have 0 and 100%.

Some games have a "walk" toggle, so you get one more speed (slow) with keyboard. According to google, ESO has this, you just need to go into options and bind a key for it.

On PC, the toggle is between walk and jog, while holding left-shift (by default) sets the speed to run. This new player guide sums it up: https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/newplayerguide/controls

I figured out the hold shift and dodge in this game by accident. I play on PC and when I'm typing fast to play the game I hit keys I don't mean to.

Walk is too slow and run is to fast on keyboard, for my experience.

Its walk, run and sprint? The analogue stick on a controller is the only way to get anything between walk and run. I was shocked that i was so close to having a solution and never tried it. I think i would have liked the game and stuck around much more seriously if this was known.

Now when i see people walking on their mounts in towns.. it makes sense.

"Why walk when you can run?"

I thought running was the preferred TES pace since pretty much forever? /shrug

Depends on what you're doing in the game at the time. For progression group content of course faster is better, that's not the problem.

Also critically, the suggestion has no impact on the people who just want to go faster. That's totally fine, no need to slow anyone down if its not wanted.

This is actually a great idea, a slider for a key in the settings menu.
Unfortunately though, I don't see ZOS implementing this. They are tied up elsewhere, have a packed and pretty hectic schedule and I'm really not sure how they recoup resources if they chose to go with this.

There is though some good news, for a price of course: Analogue keyboards
Individual keys on an analogue keyboard don't have just two states - on or off.
Each key has a smooth range of values, from 0 to 100. The precise amount determined by how much you press the key.
Because of this, you can sneak, or run, really slow, then a bit faster and back to slow again and so on. None of that it's either max speed or no speed.
What if I go north? Disappear.
    Would you come after me?

Does eso support analogue keyboards? I can't imagine it would just work without some patch to add it in.

Well if q3 this will be focused on qol, they could consider it as part of that? If they wanted to improve their finances and if the casino runner model is finally trending down for them.. the easy option is to buff eso plus. Double / triple endeavor points, and make better daily rewards battle pass style etc. Or even make battle passes instead of gambling crates, something in the middle. Im happy for content to just underpin / be the basis for showing up, if its too expensive or they've lost the passion to make good content anymore its fine if they sell trinkets. They should really add a global auction house and tradeable premium cosmetics like swtor to enable players "buying gold" from zos more easily rather than black market like direct trading. There's heaps of things they can do. Sadly, i don't know how true this is, but i bet they're focused on their new game right now and large changes to eso.. who knows.

Note sure whether by "patch" you mean on ZOS's end but in anycase for the most part any pc game that supports a controller should support, in this case, a Wooting keyboard out the box, a profile for that game may or may not be needed.
ESO supports controllers and a Wooting keyboard will be seen as a gamepad.
I can't though offer any more on this. I initially responded to the OP, highlighting that there is a hardware solution out there to a relevant QOL suggestion you've made. As the Wooting is one of the better choices, further inquiry on whether ESO supports it out the box is, imo, best submitted to Wooting Netherlands, the manufacturer.

Okay, so im trying to use an xbox controller. Its working.. but i feel like im on the couch playing some lightweight arcade game rather than being immersed at my pc in an mmo.

The console ui seems better than the pc version at everything. Even the speech dialogs. Pc players should have rioted.

Also having a 2 bar rotation, while being a snoozefest on a naga, is a hectic sequence of aiming and buttons on a controller. I can imagine the significant differences really stops them from trying anything too interesting with the combat gameplay.? Maybe you get used to it.

Even the 3rd person camera feels so much more natural using analogue sticks for movement and camera.. it doesn't work like pc mmo's do.

Its like consoles must have been this weird invisible dimension pulling the strings silently from nowhere causing zos to make all the odd decisions they did.

EDIT: Also playing with a console controller makes me think the graphics are very, very dated. On pc anything goes, but everything on console is so much better than eso.

Yeah, this is just PC gaming standards unfortunately, not ESO alone. A lot of PC players aren't aware there are jog animations in this game they've never seen before

I agree about movement speeds being too high in the game, and how that can detract from the joy of exploration. But really, a lot of it comes from the CP slottables in both the red and green constellations, and by not slotting either you can get a far more comfortable speed. I made the decision not to use those CP stars a while ago and have never looked back (I mount up if I want to move fast now). It helps with the animations too, which were pretty awful even by 2015's standards when ESO was still new, and they just look hilariously bad when you move at insane speeds. At least at normal speeds they're... bearable?

I'd love to see ESO get an animation overhaul like WoW did. Definitely one of the weaker aspects of the game, which is especially odd when usually the visuals elements of ESO are among the best in the genre.

The only time I'm ever unhappy about my movement speed being too fast is when I'm wearing the Antiquity ring that speeds it up. It was great at first, especially in places such as the Imperial City, but it was far too annoying everywhere else, so now I've just got it in my Inventory and only put it on when I absolutely want the extra speed-- which, so far, has been never, even in the Imperial City and Cyrodiil.

i have at least 2 characters that wear that all the time lol

1 is NB i primarily use for cyrodiil (sure helps running between keeps when stuck in combat)
1 is a NB i use for stealth, so i can hit move speed cap while in stealth, makes heists a breeze lol

Here I am trying to move as fast as possible. You couldn't pay me to "walk" in this game. LOL

I have 18 Rings of the hunt on my account. All of my toons wear one 100% of the time they are not in combat, and even then, I wear one if I am farming easy dungeons.

Eso is sublime on an xbox controller.

With the forced clunkyness, the unthinkably daft gameplay that makes no sense from day 1.. suddenly has the absolute perfect amount of novelty when kneecapped by a console controller.

The day you work out it never was about you. The pc port was (must have been) the cash grab. Its not like zos just forgot about the primary movement mechanism for a high budget mmo. All the expense was for console.

Shrug, anyway a new reason to get into the game is always welcome. I feel like im playing skyrim.

Also please fix the pc movement, thank you.

As other people have said this is true in a lot of games and it's the result of using an analogue input which supports more than just on/off. It's one thing I miss in a lot of games when I'm playing with keyboard and mouse instead of a controller.

ESO on PC does allow you to toggle between walk, run and sprint, but there's a lot of situations where I find the walk too slow and run a bit too fast and I'd like something in between the two. Mainly when I'm looking around towns.

For me it also needs to be a quick and easy transition, something I can do almost without thinking about it. If I have to open a menu and click between slow walk speed (the current one) and fast walk or run then it's too much hassle and not worth doing, the immersion is gone and it's taking more time so I may as well just walk slowly.

The only way I can think of to do it without an analogue input is if pressing the walk key once put you into the current slow walking speed and pressing it again speeds it up slightly (currently pressing it again just turns it off and returns you to the default run speed). Maybe there could be 2 or 3 increments and pressing it more than that puts you back up to the normal run speed. I've played some games which do that and it works well. It's not as good as using an analogue stick but better than nothing.

Ideally that would also need a way to 'reset' it straight back to the default run speed, because you don't want to suddenly find yourself in combat and be stuck mashing the walk key and trying to work out when it's cycled back to full speed. IMO a good way to do that would be tapping the sprint key, that could override the walk setting and restore you to the default.

Yeah, I got stuck in combat last night due to a negative status effect that wouldn't go away. I couldn't mount up to race to the next keep, so I thought maybe I'd equip my Ring of the Hunt-- except you can't switch gear while you're in combat. D'oh! That was one time when I wished I'd equipped the Ring ahead of time.
