If youre refering to me, I don't own a console, only pc. I am also a modder. I prefer a darker atmosphere in certain games for more immersion. There's nothing wrong with asking ESO to implement a lantern into the game. I have made several mods that do exactly that. If you don't want that in ESO then thats fine but why even say something about this if youre going to just be negative about it?

"Too light, I use an addon to make it darker... for immersion"

"Now it's too dark, I want a lantern"

"A magic lantern, so it doesn't disappear when I start swinging my double-hander, obviously, for immersion. Don't want the hassle of dropping a torch. But I don't want it to cost magica or need to be refreshed."

There is nothing remotely wrong with this. ESO's contrast levels / brightness levels in different parts of the world are a real matter of taste. And given the kinds of screens many gamers play on, it's unlikely that one person sees the game the same as another.

Here is my scuffed BUT working Almalexia's enchanted lantern toggle addon if anyone is interested. All I did was made a work around in "Light, Please" addon to toggle the lantern light on and then off using 2 different keybinds. You also need the "Memento Refresh" addon installed for this to work.

    Instructions:
    1) Install both "Light, Please Toggle v0.1" and "Memento Refresh"
    2) Go into Options> Controls> Keybinds> General> Mementos
    3) You should see 2 options
    Almalexias
    Vinvir
    4) Almalexias option toggles auto refresh enchanted lantern ON
Vinvir option toggles auto refresh enchanted lantern off

I hope this makes sense, I am still going to work on this for the next few hours and hopefully i can figure out how to make it a one button toggle. I have never done lua coding before (or very little) so it's a bit foreign to me but i will try my best.

edit: I also made it so it will tell you in chat whenever you toggle it on or off.

I mean, sure, why not? The game can get pretty dark just using the default settings. Some people play like to play in a dark environment that they have to use light sources to see stuff. It's not my thing and I don't understand it, but I know it's not an totally uncommon preference for how games look. They actually almost have everything they need for that playstyle was well. All they need is for the lantern to last as long as something like the wild hunt transformation.

I was able to increase the brightness on PS4 to see better at night and inside buildings and delves, but I have it at max now on PS5 and I still can’t see anything.

I use Almalexia’s light but I really should be able to increase the brightness further than what it is now.

Why should the game come up with a fix for something that an add-on caused?
I agree with this, that the game shouldn't be attempting to fix an issue which an addon created. Though, there are various places where I can see something like a lantern (I usually just use the memento) to illuminate the area would be nice. Places like Vaults of Madness when checking the area around the Ash Titan boss for chests, just as a single example. Though I do think the memento works just fine for me, might be nice if others want something to roleplay with.

I feel nostalgic for the old scroll world games. One of the main spells is a ball of light. You could shoot balls at the walls or hang them on your shoulder. In this game there is no section of skills - household spells that would take over such functions. This branch will contain hundreds of spells, and they will not affect the combat balance. They would make the immersion into the atmosphere more profound

You're not alone. I've used it a handful times to light up some dark area, but I don't like it much because it's too bright and moving. Much prefer the Treasure Hunter personality, even though the light radius on that one is too small instead.

It baffles me how people keep popping in commenting why the game should fix a thing an addon has caused. Reading the comments here clearly tells it's not something the addon has caused at all. Not only does it look like the addon only put the gamma at the lowest, which we are capable of doing ourselves in the setting, but many here says how the game is often dark for them without it or even increasing the gamma.
Wait, so you play with an add on that purposefully makes it darker for immersion...then want a lantern so you can see....

Nights, caves, mines etc are supposed to be dark, not washed out grey. Wanting them dark is immersive, but of course give the issue of sight so you want something for your character to light up the nearby area. It's not a weird concept, on the contrary it's very common and a lot of mods for various RPGs are related to such things.

Exatly, every game or movie i play i adjust the contrast and brightness or hdr brightness if available. i mean who wants dark colors that are supposed to black, grey? it looks horrible, and yes having a darker atmosphere is usually more immersive, especially if you have a light source.

I'm all for a lantern, but really, I really just want to be able to cast a simple, basic *candlelight* spell. You know, like, probably the first spell that every mage learns to cast.

Tbh, I am really craving more spells that help in exploration. I love killing things just as much as the next homocidal murderhobo but COMBAT SHOULDN'T BE THE ONLY GAME DESIGN PRINCIPLE!

Exploration is really important too. I would slot skills to facilitate exploration in a heartbeat.

While I would not object to having a lantern added to the game, it seems counterintuitive to purposely make the game darker at night but want something to brighten things up. I would also question why Zenimax would want to change something in the game to counter changes in appearance to the game players purposely made.

Ofc, they could revert the changes to Magelight.

    Quoted post has been removed.

Dark is a game setting the developers created for us to use though? You don't need an addon to make it dark.

I am on Playstation, we can't have add-ons.

This is the maximum dark you can make using the settings the developers offer to us.

    txmbsrj1clc4.jpg

Here is Almalexia's Lantern lighting that same space when I'm nearby at that same setting.

    p2ydo5ca51ul.jpg

And here is how I typically play the game. As you can see I don't personally need a lantern.

    przackdnb19w.jpg

You can see how the lantern can be useful even at regular setting that the developers offer. If they offer the setting, I don't see an issue with asking for some support for players who use it.

Not sure why that is such a complicated thing to understand. ESO is a world without electricity. Fire, Magic, the sun, and stars are the only sources of light. I see no issue with wanting realistic dark nights and the ability to use a lantern or torch to expose a limited area of view. Certainly not my thing, but this screams immersion. Even without an addon, new moon nights and dungeons can be very dark in this game.

The more I think about it, the more I think that mementos would be a good solution for this.

I still see people using Almalexia's Lantern in dark places. That was a memento that was released in 2014.

Besides this one, I very rarely see people using *any* memento that hasn't just been released (or re-released).

I think that something that obviously has some function and (relative) popularity, is something super marketable. Almalexia's doesn't last long enough, and if cosmetics are important, I'd much rather something that looked like the Candlelight spell from TES5, the Skyrem baby that I am.

I don't know what the best way to implement a Lantern would be, though it would be great if they found a way. I guess personality? Maybe a memento too, but locking you into any sort of animation would render it practically useless.

The best solution, i think, would be something constant that doesn't go away as soon you enter combat. Maybe it could even be part of a costume. There's one already (or maybe there are even several) that includes a lantern hanging from the belt, but it's not glowing:

I'd absolutely love it if they could make a weapon-style that could emulate togglable magelight-on-a-staff, like Gandalf from LotR, or D&D.

I just didn't understand using an addon to make the game darker then suggesting an item to brighten it back up again.

    [Edited to clarify]

Consider this. They want dark, gloomy dungeons where the only light available is the circular glow around them of their lantern with an actual fading off into darkness at the outer radius...Striving for immersion in a game that's supposed to be immersive is not a bad thing.
