Firstly, I play on PC NA, and I use the version of the game from the Bethesda website, not steam or anything else.
For some time now I've been using a gamepad to play. I usually use my Steel Series Stratus Duo, and it has worked for the better part of a year. I hadn't been playing for a few months, so I can't pinpoint what update did it, but the game no longer recognizes the Steel Series at all. To verify that it wasn't the controller, I clicked the center button, and it brought up the windows game mode overlay. Then I even went as far as quitting ESO, and starting up another game, Forza Horizon 5, and sure enough the Steel Series works for that game.
However, it seems that my official Xbox One controller works. This isn't ideal though, because that's my son's controller, and he likes to play this game with me, so we kind of need both. Any ideas why ESO just suddenly doesn't recognize this particular gamepad?
