I Keep Dying. Any Tips?

I skipped the starter island on my second toon, Mage. I find that skipping the starter stuff puts you at s slight disadvantage; My mage started with no gear geart toword being a caster, That starter bag gives you a bow and medium armor and te gear you are gifted is a sword and and greatsword.

I also learned that it is easy to stray into higher level mobs, at level 6 I strayed into an area with level 12 mobs, one at a time I had no issues but 2 or three of them meant death to me. I went back to a lower area and had an easier time of it.

Last question; how do I add a potion (or related) to my hot keys? So I can use them in combat.

Thank you Yasha! Now I know I am not on the starter island like I thought. This explains my problems more. While I agree with allowing players to skip the starter island; I think you should at least still start there. I will try my hand at the starter island before coming back to the mainland.

Try and find all the skyshards on the starter island, I think there is 6- that will give you 2 more skill points and you might level just wandering around killing stuff as well (mobs are quite weak).

Since every mob I find out side the start cities are level 5 but more often level 7, do all the city quests first, save the guild quests for after the island quest, and then proceed to do the outside city quests. You can take on a level 7 as a level 4, but the good news is "when you run away, you can run away," - Sir Robin.

Yeah I learned about the quests outside the city the hard way. I did try in a number of cases to run away but this rarely worked.

I missed the starter island at first, as I wasn't in beta. It's not very obvious that the area you're dropped into after the Tutorial isn't the starter area. There is a quest of course, so perhaps I was too excited by all the shiny to be guided correctly. ;)

I think I skipped one of the starter islands. Now I'm 14 completed with the lvl 15 zone, now doing lvl 18-20 quests. I explored all over the mainland for more quests for hours. Did not skip anything by choice, but now I'm in an uphill battle that's getting worse as I go :(

BTW, they disabled the starter islands and messed up progression for a lot of new players because of very vocal feedback against a 'too linear' progression, or some other nonsense. Thank god this forum doesn't have a General Discussions subsection...

They are not disabled. They are now optional. Huge difference. Once means it's not available at all, the other means that it's there if you want to go to it.

Two things that have really helped my survivability:
    -carry and eat food
-make sure your gear is within a few levels of yourself and always carry as much as you can make.

There's a big jump around level 6-8 where the mobs get ramped up. If you do not have a helmet and shoulder by then, they will kill you easily.
Don't be upset by the stigma of white armor ;) It really does help to have properly leveled gear.

I rolled an Imp Sorc and gave him light armor and a sword and board. I also decided to forgo the familiar for the extra magika. I seem to hold my own rather well so I'm thinking that while helpful, having a pet isn't necessarily needed.

Mobs are the npc's you fight. You can see their level by mousing over them.

A good tip for new users is no you don't start out on the starter islands anymore instead you wake up in the first major area of your alliance, before going too far into that area find the transport back to the starter zones and level up there first. You will find it much easier to progress until you're high enough to go back to the major cities (around level 7-8 at least).

Plus don't forget about those delicious skyshards :)

It baffles me that this change was ever made. I'm all for responding to the community, but I wish the ZOS would be more aware of the difference between what requested features are a good idea and which will just serve to confuse new players.

I'll be honest, if I hadn't played through the betas I wouldn't take the option to go back to the starter areas because I wouldn't distinguish between that quest and the numerous others you get in the city you now start in.

What Kijima said there for number 3. I think that would be number one for me ;)
I really think many people do not understand HOW important it is to learn how to block and break stuns. Number two for me would be armor. Must be VERY close to your lvl to be effective

For example, last night in the wyrd Tree quest I was fighting the ghost thingy inside the tree ( yes, I am horrible at names) I didn't block very well the first go around with it and after it puts a hold on you then you break free it does a huge dmg attack that can pretty much one shot you. And it did. I forgot to block. Went back in and hardly a scratch when I blocked correctly. And I was only using a two hander, not a sword and board.

Also all of us who are playing 5 days early have the bonus treasure maps-use them! All of the chests from these maps have been really easy to find(at least so far-I've used 2). This will help u with better gear and thus better survivability. If u don't want to do the starter islands at least go back for the skill shards and these treasure chests. Also-make sure u only take out the maps u want to use-don't take all of them out at once. They are labeled by faction and area so it's easy to just open up the sack?backpack? select the one u want then leave the rest in the sack(and not crowding u're inventory).

I've been playing the game today and while I have been enjoying it there has been one road block; I keep dying. Are there any tips anyone can give me regarding playing safer? I find myself playing in areas where enemies are higher levels; but it is not entirely obvious until a fight begins. Also, where is my pet?! Thanks!
Stick to low level areas. Go to the starter city gates, and go out just far enough that you see beginner mobs, and kill them there.

You will continue to get XP even from stuff you have outlevelled for a while. Don't be in a rush to attack higher level stuff. In addition to being annoying, dying erodes your gear. Take your time and stick to the stuff you are sure you can handle for a while. The game has only been live for a few days.

Think of this as a sort of extended tutorial. You are still kind of figuring out the mechanics. So stay with the low level stuff till you are up to speed. You'll get it eventually.

I skipped a lot of the starter island and made it to 6 before going back to it(at which point I was and still am stuck on a quest to kill the corruption of the tree as it one shots me and I am in a confined space. I finished all of those and am now level 9 as a Sorcerer. I to am getting frustrated with how often I am dying, and I thank everyone for responding to this thread. I have solely been using light armor, but I may have to get a few pieces of heavy armor to help out for a while I guess. I am just way to weak at this point(damage is amazing though when I compare to others).

As people have said here already go back to the Starter Island and the next zone after that. I went back to Bleakrock at like level 7, gained a level and got the two skyshards there for another free skill point. It really did help. Also try different skills out in combination. I'm finding I have some skills that do more damage, but chew up so much resources that I can only do it one time for a fight then I'm stuck just doing the basic attacks. Use one that might do as much damage, but you can use several times allowing you to re-act to situations.

    Yes, it is.

Collecting all of the skyshards will help you progress, you may also get a level or two from all the experience there as well, remember you gain experience just by finding new areas on the map. Don't try to force the questlines, and if there is something off to the left a little that grabs your interest, go have a look. Nothing wrong with being side tracked by the landscape, scenery and such.

The starter islands are great for XP, not to mention everything else! Lockpicks, Armour, all sorts of things... Just on the weapon thing, there are a few decent enchanted weapons to pick up, and these are invaluable. With a decent weapon and strategy with your skills, you can do wonders.

While questing a few levels above your character is possible, you just need to be strategic about it, slow down, take your time and plan your attacks if you have to make them.

As soon as I got out of Coldhabour the first thing I did was travel back to the roost (AD) not saying you have too, but then I liken it to reading a good book. Would you skip a chapter so you can get into the good parts quicker or read all of it in context. That's how it feels skipping it for me.

I liked the way it was in beta before the changes, it was more intuitive I feel, but I'm not complaining about, it's not exactly hard to go back to the starter islands is it.

    You need to block.

You need to use interrupts, especially on casters who have hard hitting spells.

Picking up a stun, knockback skill for your action bar is a good idea (many overlook these in favor of damage skills, which can lead to issues).

Put points in health, not just your damage attribute.
