The Mentor

On your character’s journey, you will meet those who provide guidance and training. Some are tough as nails and others are gentle souls. Among these there will be one who figuratively or literally took your character by the hand and was pivotal in giving your character the tools that led to their success. This exercise will help you bring to life your mentor. Select one or more qualities from each section.

Reputation

“A Legend” - Your mentor is lauded as a genius. Long after they pass from this world, scholars will study their work and bards will sing songs of their deeds.

Well Respected - Your mentor is considered one of the foremost experts in their field.

Known to Some - Your mentor is recognizable in certain circles, but they are far from “famous.”

An Eccentric - Your mentor is not known by most, and the few that do, consider their work to be a bit unorthodox.

Wicked - Your mentor is rarely spoken of by anyone in their field, but when they are, it is not in kind terms. The ethics of their methods are frequently questioned by those in their field.

A Loon - Your mentor is more infamous than famous. They are considered incompetent, unsound, dangerous, or some combination of the three.

Relationship

Favored - You are never far from your mentor’s mind. They believe you to be a gifted individual, even a “chosen one.”

Star Pupil - Your mentor remembers you as exceptionally bright and talented. They avidly track your progress and encourage your success.

Familiar - You stood out from the other students, perhaps not always for the right reasons. Were they to meet you again, it would only take a moment to remember you.

Disappointment - For one reason or another, your mentor feels you wasted your potential. They think of you, but not fondly.

Forgetful - Your mentor may not remember you but acts like they do. Sometimes they call you by another student’s name, but are glad to see you. They always welcome your help.

None - Your mentor has no memory of you.

Resources

Master of Unknown - Your mentor has access to things beyond mortal understanding. They possess items of legend and easily walk in places of myth.

Wealth Beyond Measure - Your mentor’s wealth rivals that of some kingdoms. All that can be bought is within their reach.

Accomplished - Your mentor owns a modest property with access to a few comforts and fine materials related to their trade.

Down on Their Luck - Your mentor struggles with debt and day-to-day expenses. These struggles bring considerable trouble to your mentor and they cannot deal with them on their own.

Ascetic - Your mentor places no value on material wealth. They own nothing and give away what little they find.

Skill

Holder of Hidden Truths - Your mentor has walked between worlds and understands things that others could spend thousands of lifetimes failing to comprehend. Anyone who witnesses them perform even simple tasks can innately sense they are in the presence of a living myth. At some tasks even gods cannot rival his mastery.

Greatest Alive - Perhaps there once was or will one day be a talent to rival your master, but among mortal beings, they have no equal. Even with your formal instruction behind you, there is much you could learn from them.

Competent - Your mentor has undeniable ability. He can teach many, though there are few lessons they now have to teach you.

Those Who Cannot Do - Due to age, injury, or illness, your mentor has lost some or much of their former prowess. The lessons you have yet to learn are beyond their ability to teach.

Charlatan - Your mentor is not the person you or the world once thought them to be. Though you may have learned much from them, it has nothing to do with their skills or abilities. Perhaps they practice in theory or maybe nudge you in the right direction.

Accessibility

With You Always - Your mentor’s guidance is never far from your ear. Perhaps they are an ever-present watchful spirit, or contact is the result of a simple spell. Whatever the circumstance, guidance is there when you need it and absent when this drives you to achieve something of your own.

A Call Away - Your mentor is easy to find and reach. Writing a letter or looking in a particular place will almost always get you in contact with them.

Rarely Present - Your mentor is busy or always moving. Without specific knowledge, clever tricks, or considerable effort, it is difficult to establish contact.

Wandering Wind - Your mentor is impossible to find when you need them and the source of many troubles when they are around. It is never convenient or easy to depend on them in any way.

Dead - Your mentor is beyond your reach.
