The Rival

On your character’s journey, they will face many foes. Some will injure and cause pain. There are those however who will make your character groan with irritation. Those are the ones who spur your character at every pass, constantly walking the line between friend and foe. This exercise will help you bring to life a rival for your character.

The Background

Choose the When, Where, and Why of the Event that led to the Rivalry.

We met …

… when I was a child.
… in a tavern.
… as applicants to a guild.
… as apprentices to a master of _______.
… on the road to _______.
… in the military.

We can’t stand each other despite …

… being related by blood.
… being of the same race.
… having the same beliefs.
… having the same master.
… being in the same guild.
… once being great friends.

We first fought …

… over the same prize,
… for the attention of someone else,
… because of pride,
… after I corrected them in public,
… over a situation that nearly got us killed,
… over a situation that nearly got us expelled from a prized institution,
… over something petty,

… but I secretly …

… admire their skills.
… envy their privilege.
… want their approval.
… would trust them with my life
… find them attractive
