Big TIme Memory Leak?

I started noticing a lot of lag about an hour ago, been playing since morn of course.

Task Manager showed over 2 million K used by this game. Yes, I said 2 million. Just checked it again and it is now over 3 million! Going to restart my computer now, before it gets to 4 million ROFL!

Talk about messed up forums. I can access my forum profile entirely, see all the info on my discussions and such. But can't edit the post I just made 15 minutes ago. Anyway, restarted my computer, started ESO again, and the task manager shows around 830,000. So yeah, this game creates massive memory leaks after a while. Best to log out and restart computer now and then it one is going to play a long time...

This was an issue they were having during beta. It's something that I know they're actively working on. It's not nearly as bad as it was then though. I played for 7 hours straight today and didn't have any CPU issues like I did during beta, so it's getting better.

Best to restart the client and keep at it. It's one of those things that'll get fixed soon.

This comes from them releasing only a 32-bit version of the game.
Hopefully, they'll soon release a 64-bit version, rumored to be in development.

    Hey Folks,

You may want to try the following troubleshooting which could help with the memory leaks being experienced.

    1. Make sure your video drivers are up to date.
    • Nvidia Video Cards: http://www.nvidia.com click "Drivers" and choose Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.
    • AMD Video Cards: http://www.amd.com click "Drivers & Support" and click the "Find your driver" button.
    • Other Video Cards: You should contact the computers manufacturer for driver updates.

    2. Try running the ESO launcher as an administrator
    • Right click the ESO Launcher
    • Select "Run as Administrator"

    3. Try running the game in Windows 7 or Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode.
    • Right click the ESO launcher
    • Select properties and choose the desired mode

    4. Disable startup items running in the background using the system configuration utility
    • Go to the start menu
    • In the search box type MSCONFIG and hit enter
    • In the System configuration utility select the general tab
    • Select the option "Selective Startup"
    • Uncheck "Load Startup Items"
    • Click OK, you should be prompted to restart your machine

Please let us know if any of these help clear up the memory leaks.

When I start the game it runs smoothly for approximately 10-15 minutes (though I pay attention to the task manager on the background, and it indicates that the memory usage begins to increase incessantly to more than one million and a half)

So I think that I might have the same issue. The task manager shows me a constant increment of the memory usage on Eso.Exe. When I undergo such high amount the game begins to stutter and the fps starts to drop suddenly (specially in crowded areas or cities).

At the moment, none of the solutions offered by the moderator above me have worked for me. I am trying to figure out what is wrong.
  • selcaermelb16_ESO
I still have this issue. I noticed that there is like a 'balloom' effect. The more places I go (for example going from the north of Auridon to the south, visiting different towns and cities), the more KB of memory usage appears on the Task Manager. It seems that Eso.exe is accumulating things or not freeing accumulated memory?

I tried to fix this by reinstalling the game too, but it didn't worked for me neither. I don't know what more to do.

    Does anybody have more suggestions?

    My specs:

    Windows 7 x64
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.40 Ghz 1.80 Ghz
    4 GB RAM
    GeForce GTX 550

    Thanks for reading.

I noticed this myself. I logged in in Davon's Watch, solid 60FPS with a TON of people around. After about a half hour of playing though, I was down to about 50FPS in the same spot. Restart client, back up to 60 again. This is clearly an issue (albeit a minor one).

Sry that's noy really the issue on my side and probably many others. The game is suffering from a pretty large memory leak that consumes memory really fast.

After around 10-15 min in Cyrodil in a large battle the game will start to stutter and become more violent for each passing minute. A freshly started instance of TESO will utilize roughly 1.5 GB. After a while it will steadily increase. The memory usage is jumping sporadically with an increasing average depending on how much time has passed, while steadily increasing the amount of memory being used.

This is really just an issue of a good old memory leak that no drivers or compatibility setting can fix.

I think programmers who can code and manage memory usage were eaten by the Daedra long ago. Now all we're left with is those who don't write memory release code into their programs

my issue with eso.exe is it wont properly terminate when shut down. I have 5 instances of eso.exe in my task manger and I cannot kill any of them. Not so much worried about memory leaks as I am running win 7 pro with 32gb ddr3

    ---

I actually have NOT noticed this problem. Haven't been checking performance, but none of the symptoms you'd normally see with a memory leak. Weird. My FPS starts bizarrely low and stays there.

I am going to add two Screenshots of my Task Manager to show the memory usage (the second one is in spanish, but I guess you can figure out what it means).

As other people above me, I'd like to say that I don't get any crash because of this issue, despite of reaching more than two million KB usage. The only effect that it entails is a terrible stuttering and fps drop. From 50 to 4 and so on.

Same problem and I think Ive found a culprit.

Its not purging data when you switch characters. Eso.exe is using around a gig of ram after I restarted the game snd have only played Fjalar.

Soon as I hop alts memory usahe starts climbing. It rises and fslls as expected when on one character but the more I hop around the higher the "low" end is. Those alta are mostly sitting in Davons Watch so thats a LOT of player data I have stashed Ill not see again on my main.

Memory amount doesn't mater all that much. The problem is that the game uses more and more CPU power because of the leak and causing stutter ingame.

eso.exe hitting 2 GB shouldn't be a problem. I had 3.5 GB after running ESO for about 10h last weekend - and it was still smooth: no stuttering, lags or fps drops.
eso.exe can handle up to 4 GB of memory on Windows x64.
Install more RAM. 4 GB is too low - especially on Windows x64. Also 1 GB of VRAM isn't that much for high detail games.

To just suggest people throw more memory to counteract a programs memory leaks is simply ludicrous.

I killed the cpu stutter with a setting given in one of these forums(cant give it atm, not at my pc) but the memory issue is driving me nuts.

Game doesnt use much vram. MMOs are ridiculously notorious for being CPU and RAM heavy because they expect folks to have crappier computers than hardcore gamers.

My board supports up to 8GB, and thats what is going in it whrn I get paid. HOWEVER, min spec is 2 GB for the game. Eating more than that on its recommended settings is BS, and shouldnt happen.

actually after extensive debugging and something i noticed after an observation tech support lvl 2 made i found the culprit and what the major issue is. i have 32 gigs of ram in my pc and can play for several hours then start having crash after crash after crash. somehow my 30 gigs of free ram dwindled down to less than a gig of free ram which i looked and eso client cached almost 30 gigs over a few hours and locks it and refuses to release it so all the random cashing is actually due to that. restart my computer as its the only way to get eso client to release it and the longer i play the more it caches and refuses to release so every few hours i have to restart the computer to keep my crash free game play. if you don't believe me monitor it in task manager performance tab and you will see cached memory climb and never release as long as eso is running. I just replied to tech support explaining the issue. it's not so much a memory leak in the client per say as its just simply not releasing the cached memory it keeps accumulating.

At 24gb ddr3 I dont crash but I certainly lose voiceovers after a while and have to restart the client to get them back. It's the game client's issue, not other processes. None of the above resolves it.

This is a known issue of every Bethesda/Zenimax title released in modern gaming (firstperson type games) since, well forever.

    Havok engine.

It gets bad quicker if you zone around a lot. It keeps loading new textures and never releases them.

For console games, I've always suggested quitting the game every hour or so. Not sure what the deal for pC is, I've not run into the problem as much, but it will be similar. If you use the fast travel a lot , it's going to build up quicker and the more people near you, including npcs, the worse it will be.

How much are you guys seeing this? Or maybe how often is the better question? I run 8GB and don't have any game crashes. The closes I have is the loss of a voice over, which I thought was a different problem. Maybe I enter and exit the game more than I realize

Outside of game crashes or voiceovers, any other problems?

Typically with the Havok thing, you just end up with more and more lag.
