It will allow you to know what weapon to use it on, and for some you need to research its traits first. to do so, you must have an item with a trait, ex. A quest item or a drop. and go to a smithing work station, there you can research it and learn its trait so you can then use the trait learned on weapons/armors if you have the gems to do so. Hope this helped.
"Here's to me, and Here's to you, Here's to love and laughter. I'll be true, as long as you, but not a moment after."
A Fire Opal is tied to a specific Trait. Traits are bonuses sometimes found on weapons and armor (white text under the durability bar). You will need to Research whatever trait uses a Fire Opal as its ingredient.
Researching a trait is specific to the weapon...if you research say "Sharp" on a sword, you can only put it on a sword and will have to research it again for a dagger and such.
Once you know whatever Trait needs a Fire Opal, you can craft and item and add a Fire Opal to the crafting process to add that Trait to your item.
When you go to the crafting stations the far right tab will be "Research". Scroll through the icons of the items and it will tell you what you can research.
just bear in mind the first trait you research on that item will take 6 hours, second trait on the same item 12 hours and it continues to increase in time, so if you know a trait you really want research it first and a trait you could care less about last.
So if you want to f.ex create a sharpened greatsword, you will first have to find a sharpened greatsword (any level), go to the research tab in blacksmithing, scroll over to greatsword and double click the sharpend trait. You will the be given the option to research the trait.
Researching a trait destroys the item used in the research process.
Also, when you have researched 2 or more traits on an item, you can also use the special crafting stations around the world to craft set items that gives additional bonuses.
