Reminds me of that old Simpsons episode where Homer saves the shuttle by breaking off a rod to murder his fellow astronauts, only for it to lodge in the door keeping it closed so the shuttle could safely return to Earth.

In the end the Inanimate Carbon Rod got all the credit, even got its own parade and picture on some magazine cover.
