Sudden Death in Xeemhok fight

A friend and I with our companions were fighting Xeemhok, the Trophy Taker. Any time one of us died, the other died immediately, regardless of health level. Should this simultaneous death be happening? Our after death damage summaries showed no unusually high final strike levels.
