Passives from skills not slotted?

I would really like to know this. If i take a passive from a guild skill tree does an ability have to be slotted for the passive to be active.

I get confused because in the fighters guild tree there is a passive that says bestows 3 ultimate for each undead killed. Why wouldnt that be active even without a skill slotted from the fighters guild? Unless of course it clearly says only when fighter guild skill slotted.

No, passive skills never have to be slotted and are considered to be always "active." Though some passive skills require a certain piece of equipment to take effect (such as armour skills that give you bonuses based on the number of pieces worn, or weapon skills that add bonus damage only to a specific weapon type). There are also skills that grant passive bonuses based on the number of skills of a certain tree you have slotted, but the skill description specifically mentions this if that's the case.

You can have hundreds of passives affecting your character at the same time.

Thanks. Ya i know a passive doesnt have to be slotted i just wanted to know about if a skill from that entire tree always needs to be slotted for the passive to be working, unless the passive of course actually says only when skill is slotted. Thanks though you did answer my question.

So let me ask this just to be sure. In the one hand and shield tree a passives says moved increase speed while blocking. Lets says i put i skill point in there but i do not currently have any one hand and shield equipped. Only staff and two handed, so you saying that if i have a point in that passive i will still get increased speed while blocking even with just my staff?

    you won't get the passive

While a one-handed weapon and shield is equipped...
    +25% movement speed while blocking.

you have to equip a shield and a one-hand weapon to get it

Ahh the confusion for me is its doesnt say thst on skill builder sites. Thanks though.

What about that passive in fighters guild that says bestows 3 ultimate when killing undead. Would i need a fighters guild skill slotted. That one doesnt say anything about it.

The in-game description doesn't say anything about needing a FG skill slotted, so it probably doesn't. Class and guild passives specifically state when they require a slotted skill or that a skill from the same line be used. Website builders may not always include the full in-game description for the skill, though.

Passive Skills are always active if you meet the requirements. Requirements would be things like having a skill from that line slotted or using Restoring Light skills etc. Some Passive Skills don't have requirements. Racial passives for example. They will be active no matter what once points are spent. Hope that helps to further reiterate what others here have been saying.

    Read the skill tooltips.
Unless it specifically says that there is a requirement, there is no requirement.

FYI this is a necro of a thread that's 2 years old - a lot of things have changed in the game since then.

One thing that holds true is that the passives will tell you if you need to have a skill slotted (or in some cases if you have to actually use a particular skill, or kill an enemy, or something) for it to apply, or if you need to have a particular weapon or type of armour equipped for it to apply. If the passive doesn't list any such requirements, then it's always active.

I think it's especially stupid that the Fighters Guild passives don't require a skill to be slotted. The Mages Guild passives are much more intelligently designed.
