No tutorial, no help, so dead

deleted220227-002348
Ok, so I am new to this, I have got out of my cell and equipped a sword and shield but have fought and been killed by the skeleton warrior more times now than I can count. No explanation of the interface, no hand-holding, no real tutorial for beginners - this is just an exercise in frustration.

Sorry to say but this feels totally overwhelming, all rush and hurry. Need a much slower and easier introduction to the game, make it optional if you like, but right now, for me, this is unplayable. Very disappointed.

In the beta, I found the skeletons pretty easy to dispatch. If you're suffering difficulties, I'd recommend hitting the skeleton, and then juking sideways (with 'A' or 'D').

You'll see "tells" in the form of red paths. Make sure to move out of the way of those.

I feel the same. I have only a marginal idea of the combat system, no idea how to chat, and a bag full of crafting items that I don't know how I collected, or how to use.

It takes time. I felt the same when I started world of warcraft but ultimately it was an amazing experience. I'm just as confused as you but I urge you to give it time.

People praise 'vanilla' builds but they forget that they were confusing as heck at first, and often very buggy. Stay with us.

Hit stuff with mouse 1, block with mouse 1+2, dodge by double tapping either of WASD keys. Try to strafe (move sideways without turning) while hitting stuff as above.
I havent logged in yet, so maybe I should say anything yet
Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

Well I can't seem to time my blocks right, or at least they don't seem to do anything. Rolling away after each attack stops working pretty soon as my stamina (I think, who can tell?) runs out - 2 more tries, 2 more deaths - I guess this just isn't for me - quite happy to accept I'm rubbish but was hoping to be able to play the game slowly on my own, but it looks like I can't.

    So damn frustrating :-(

Considering that when you equip a weapon they do give you a pop up tutorial explaining attacks. And when you open any menu they pop up a tutorial. I find the claim that there is no tutorial a little ludicrous.

Also, unless you are not attacking the enemy, you should be able to kill the skeleton with just the basic #1 attack repeated at him since you do more damage by far then he does.

OMG, I finally managed to kill him! Thanks for the power attack suggestion :-) Still not confident, but I'll move on see what happens next.

Maybe obvious but are you pointing your weapon at the enemy?

Ok, the skeleton archer? Yup, I'm SO dead again (and again) - my equipment must have the strength of tissue paper by now!
  • deleted220227-002348
Thanks LoreRunner - whatever helpful text was displayed when I picked up the weapons flashed past me far too fast to read - YOU may not need handholding, I obviously do
  • deleted220227-002348
Tobiz - yes, I made that mistake a few times early on, but have learned that at least :-)

well that is the point, you don't have any equipment except for that sword, and that one does not degrade.
Just make sure that whenever the red cone appears on the ground that you step (or dodge) out of it. Whit archers you have to get very close and spam your simplest attack or the power attack to kill ham, but keep moving around him and avoid being hit

Keep moving and avoid being hit is the key to this combat system

@dgiffin The Helpful text does not disappear until you hit the lower right corner to close it or you press Alt like it tells you to. Since ALL helpful text tells you that pressing Alt is going to close it, you might want to make sure not to be doing that for all those 'pesky tutorials' that you don't like.

I was just making the statement that the game gave you tutorials, they were in the form of pop-ups that you must choose to ignore instead of quest people.

Also, there is a huge section in the menu system with a giant questionmark on it (Press F1 if you don't know how to open your bags and/or how to use the upper area to move around them to it). If you think you are having trouble with something, do you not consider using the Questionmark page might provide you with answers to questions?

@LoreRunner‌ I WANT tutorials! I just think we'll have to agree to disagree on this - I'm still struggling and although I have had a lot of help here I didn't feel the game did much to help me into the mechanics.

@Tobiz - sorry but anything I need to know should be in-game, I'm not a hard core player, just looking for some fun.

Then you should reach out to customer support, not the player helping player forum. Im gonna call you a troll unless you start appreciating the people trying to help you.

Im sorry, didnt mean to offend, nor are you spoiling my day.
That said, trying to make the visitors on this forum make an ingame tutorial for you does seem a bit far fetched.

@tobiz Sorry you misunderstand me, I'm not asking the helpful people HERE to make an in-game tutorial, I'm saying I think it should be part of the game as I'm struggling - yes I'm most likely slow and yes I am new to all of this so I'm sure most people wouldn't want to have to plod through what I would like to work my way through to learn the game, so something optional would be nice.

I've raised this through the game feedback which I guess is a better place to do it but I really do appreciate the help and suggestions I've had here, they've really help me but I still feel I'm just mashing buttons with no real understanding - all my issue and I'm sure 99.99% of players are having a great time.

Honestly, if you are having problems with combat in the tutorial.... maybe not the game for you. I know it's not constructive, but neither this all thread

Should you still need assistance it is easier for us to help if you have a specific question. That might be hard if everything is new and unfamiliar but do try.

Maybe there is a way to reset all ingame tutorials, does anyone know?

@Tobiz Create a new character or go to F1 (far right in character menus) to read the tutorials there is the only way.

Considering how far he is gone (2 minutes), he could just reroll and this time read pop ups instead of closing them

What is needed are a few 'kill x number of beasties' type quests. I finished the starting zone with only a half idea about how to kill and no idea about how to do things like chat to zone. In the name of clarity, I'm used to the wow system.

When you pick the weapon up a window opens up TELLING you how to use it. Equip it, keep mob under target reticle, thrash away with left mouse button (you have no other skills as yet) and job's done.

A lot of people find the mouse feels 'upside down' and have difficulty pointing at a target.
If you think that might be part of your problem try using the 'invert mouse' toggle in the control menu.

If not, just ignore me - it's only a suggestion.
'Clever' sigs get old real fast - just like this one.

The 'WoW system' was not good. Be glad that it's not like it.
Im pretty sure you'll get the hang of it and become a great player, and if you have questions ask them, but remember to narrow it down so its easier to answer.

I am thinking that a lot of players coming from WoW or LotRO may be thinking that TESO will auto-attack for them. Not gonna happen that way in this game, friends.

You have to point the reticule (mouse thingy on your screen) at the bad guy and then mash the heck out of the Left mouse key. Use an interrupt (L+R mouse keys) or an evade (double-tap a WASD key) whenever you see RED on the floor or it's gonna be your red blood dripping out of your soon-to-be corpse on the floor next.
