Hard no when ESO first launched I looked into the game and did not like what I found to the point where I ignored the games existence for 4 years after launch.

It was not until 2018 that I found that it had improved enough to catch my interest and finally gave it a shot been playing ever since.

Even with all this games flaws I like it the way it is for the most part, if the game had stayed the course and remained like it did when it launched I would never have bothered with the game got no desire to see a "classic version" since for me this classic version you speak of was when the game looked at its worst at least to me.

Yes, but keeping a lot of the QoL stuff, minus One Tamriel... it's never made sense to me to be able to go to other Alliances before you end the War and Bal, it makes much more sense to be able to do that with Cadwell's Silver/Gold. Besides, I miss being able to go to the old Vet areas when there'd sometimes be days without running into other players.

Would you like a classic ESO server? It was more difficult, danger lurked in every corner. Cadwell's gold really meant something. How about a classic ESO server with all of the quality life improvements. Dying, transmute, sticker book, luck improvement, transmog and the the CP system.

Classic from when? Before 1T? Hell no.

There are patches since that were more fun than others, but there's no place I wish they'd stopped forever. People forget all the things that were changed for the better.

I'm waiting for the OP to come back, ignore the comments and declare purely based on the poll results that almost 70% of players do want ESO Classic, ignoring the fact that the majority of those picking the second option seem to have read it as saying no to the whole idea.

(Of those who commented I can see 1 who picked that option and wants what it says - ESO Classic exactly as the game was at launch - and 7 who are using it to mean they don't want ESO Classic in any form.)

I wasn't around before One Tamriel so I have no idea what a classic server would be like. I do know that I don't want an overland slog, and I don't want to be locked out of areas, so based on what I've heard, my answer would probably be no. But I chose Other in case I've heard wrong.

I’d dig it, but I’d certainly not rebuy houses and various whatnot there, out of principle at this point.

I played the original game when it first came out, took a couple of characters through the original zones and some of the early upgrades. Then I stopped playing and when I came back I was disappointed at how easy the game is to play. The only time I ran into difficulties was when I went to Craglorn without realizing that half the zone is intended for group play and somehow ended up with the group opening quests.
I'm also not a fan of the number of things which are account wide. I really would prefer my characters to make their own way in the world. It is particularly irritating that I find things flagged as done (which changes the map) when the only character who has actually done it was back in the "good old days".

I also get the impression that most of the development effort seems to go into "fluff" - new pets, housing, clothing, reward chests and the like.

I had intended to run through all the content in order of release but I'm not sure now I will last the distance.

No ESO classic as per build when it launched
Producing a "Classic ESO" version would be a one-time project. Surely there are backup copies of the ESO "build" at various dates, so most of the work has already been done. Once "Classic ESO" was released (whether MMO server or stand-alone single player), it shouldn't require any more work (no updates ever). So why are so many ESO players so opposed to such an idea??? Having "Classic ESO" available would in no impact YOUR gaming: you'd still have ESO "live" server as you do now. So, such an option won't affect YOU at all.

It seems that ZOS could make a good bit of money from a single-player version of "Classic ESO." I bet there are lots of folks who don't want to play an online game, but who would buy a local-machine game from Steam.

Just because OSRS was a decent success everyone and their grandma's want legacy servers, Only for a total of 10 people still playing on those severs half a year after launch. Forcing the Already cheap and understaffed Zenimax to split their resources even further.

I miss wandering into the wrong areas and actually being scared of mobs. Level scaling makes levelling up completely irrelevant, you can grow as powerful as you want, but that rat in the starting zone will also be working out and become just as powerful as you.
Back in my days, I could be scared of wandering into the rift, but then I could level up, get better gear enough to handle the enemies there and pretty much one-shot the rats in starting zones. Now I can pretty much 3-shot any mob at any level at any moment.

I started playing conan exiles again, and I discovered something I felt I needed ever since, something that ESO USED to have but not anymore, and that's me actually being afraid of whatever I might encounter while wandering, and seeing an actual big monster and run away from it.
I had a similar story in fallout 76 before the level scaling patch, where I drank that nukashine and blacked out, only to wake up in the cranberry bog, full of lvl 30 scorched (I was lvl 11) and 2 frickin' lvl 50 scorchbeasts, where I panicked and all I could do was run away, living in fear of that zone, until I was strong enough to go back and start killing scorchbeasts too.

That alone was good motivation for me to grind, farm, become stronger, and eventually go back to that monster and defeat it, and then wish I'd never have to go through that ever again, but know that it will happen again and hopefully I'd be ready.

I used to get that a lot from classic ESO, when wandering in high level areas, like riften, eastmarch, and partially shadowfen*, and especially DLC zones like orsinium.
All of that is gone now.

ZOS has taken a terrible approach, especially with the PTS combat changes of "we're lowering the ceiling to make it more accessible to casuals who can't reach it" instead of "we're rising the floor so that casuals can reach the ceiling easier"

They started with tamriel one update where now everything scales to you, so there's no more fear of actual strong enemies, and because of that, there is no more motivation to actually get stronger, unless you plan on doing trials and veteran dungeons, which is side-content.

Ironically, without that fear, without that motivation to get stronger, then there's no real point on farming gear that makes you stronger, especially mythic items. I used to grind so much to get better, but as you can see from the overland thread, it seems the only way to make story content challenging is by outright nerfing yourself, unequip your specialized gear and remove all CP.

    It's a backwards mentality.

So in a sense, I'd like a classic server, but I think I'm more inclined towards a veteran story mode (not veteran overland, just veteran main story mode)

    Short answer: you heard right.

Long answer: it depended partially on where you want to go and what you consider as locking you out. In theory you could go anywhere in your alliance right from the start, but each zone was scaled to a different level and if the enemies were too far above your level they could kill you instantly. I remember going to Reaper's March on my low level crafter to collect surveys and just about being able to make it without dying if I got the path and the timing right.

However you couldn't go to the other Alliance's maps until you'd finished the main story. That unlocked Cadwell's Silver which granted you access to 1 other Alliance and once you'd finished that main story you got Cadwell's Gold which gave you access to the 3rd Alliance. However you didn't go to the same copies of the maps as players in those Alliances, you got a seperate version with higher level enemies, which were used to work through the veteran levels which was basically an early version of the Champion system. So you were still seperated from players in other Alliances, but you did get to see the maps eventually.

I assume there wouldn't be any houses to buy, since they were added a lot later, after One Tamriel.

Come to think of it buying mounts may not be a concern either, depending on what the OP considers to be a QoL update. Originally there were only 6 horses (4 bought from stables, the white one from the Imperial edition and the palamino sold on the website) and you had to go to a stable to change which one you were using. More importantly you trained that specific horse, not the character, so once you'd upgraded one you were unlikely to swap it out. Especially the black, paint and bay horses from stables which got bonus points in 1 stat each.

As far as I remember everything else which is now in the collections menu (which also didn't exist) was either a lot rarer and couldn't be bought, like pets and costumes, or didn't exist like different hair styles and markings (if you wanted to change your appearence at all you deleted the character and re-made them). So there wouldn't be much stuff to re-buy even if you wanted to.

Definitely not. ESO pre-1T was terrible. The game was pretty much dead once you made it to Cadwell's Silver and completely dead through Cadwell's Gold. Way, WAY back in the beginning you had to train your mounts individually and decide how to allocate their limited stats which is a design choice that never needs to rear its ugly head again :D

What I would like to see is the game made available to play offline (in the hopefully far future) when the plug is eventually pulled and the servers are taken down permanently. If this also included the ability to "choose your patch" that would be a neat feature.
