Mystery solved. The cards never render in the tavern for me before my opponent with a faster rig clutches them. So much for learning the opponents strategy...

I have this issue sometimes as well, though not very often. Sometimes the card barely leaves the pile before it's snatched up, and I never get to see what it is.
