Unusual Plays Observed

Today, in a PvP (unrated) match, I observed my opponent making plays I never observed before. I picked patrons first and last, selecting St. Pelin and Ansei Frandar Hunding. My opponent selected Duke of Crows and Grandmaster Delmene Hlaalu. I played first, so my opponent starts with one gold on the board.

After we both played the first hand, I noticed my opponent would begin their hand with one gold on the board each turn, sometimes two gold, before they played any of their cards. As I watched, their gold would increase from zero, to one and sometimes increase again to two, and only then would they play a card. I also observed, on several occasions, my opponent turning the Duke of Crows patron to his favor at the beginning of their turn, again before they played their first card.

Are these legitimate moves, which I'm just not familiar with?

Did your opponent use the ansei deck patron? Did they use an agent that generate gold?

I listed the patron decks we both drew. If you're asking which cards they played each turn, it was a combination of all the cards, played at various times. Keep in mind, the unusual activity occurred BEFORE they played any cards in their hand. I'm not aware of any cards or benefits which carry over from one hand to the next, except your accumulated prestige.

If they got ansei patron favor, they get 1 gold at the beginning of their turns without using cards. If they activate an agent in play that gives gold, they will get more gold without playing a card from their hand.

This was occurring as early as turn two and there were no agents on the board.

In the picture i just linked, #4 is the place that your agents are put. Your opponent agents are put over the tavern cards (#2). When you play an agent, it goes to that place and gives you it’s effect, but you can click it in subsequent turns to get its effect again.

In the picture, it shows a cards that gives 1 gold when activated. You don’t need to use a card to activate an agent in play so it will seem as though you get 1 gold for no reason.

If you get both st pelin and ansei starting cards at turn one, you can buy ansei’s patron favor with two power and get 1 gold/turn for as long as your opponent doesn’t buy its favor.

Okay, that provides some clarity with regard to the gold. Thank you for that.

What about obtaining the favor of the Duke of Crows, before playing any cards?

I don’t know, they might have tried to go for a patron victory. They were probably setting themselves up to get the two last favors with currency exchange and tithe?

Could be lag between players, at least that is what I tell myself when I see stuff like that happen. I've seen card get snatched up in mid air and I don't even see them until just before they hit the discard pile (assuming I see them at all), Ive seen coins 6 or 10 at the time appear out of nowhere and I never saw the high coin cards hit the table for anyone to grab.

If they have the favour of the Ansei Patron, and get the 1 gold coin at the start of their turn, they can use it to gain the favour of the crow patron before playing any cards.

That makes sense. I had only recently started playing with the Ansei Patron and needless to say, the possible moves where new to me. It all makes sense and now I know to watch out for it.

Thanks to all for the education.
