Everyone says you should keep your deck small so you can keep playing your good cards more frequently and get more combinations, so I assume you're also advised to focus on the cards of a single patron.

But I seem to be doing okay by having a larger deck with cards of multiple patrons. I can get combinations fairly regularly, sometimes even for two different patrons at once, especially if I'm able to look ahead and pick two or more cards to discard from the top of my draw pile.

Is that just because I've only played against NPCs so far? Is it just dumb luck coupled with weak AI?

I think it depends on patrons used. Some of the higher NPCs can be tough at first if you haven't played against certain decks before at least until you learn how they work.

It depends on the deck you’re playing and the cards you get. Duke, for example, benefit a lot from focusing mostly on it and you can combo 10 cards in a turn by focusing on it. Dreaming cave and other cards that make you pick another cards without having to combo also do not weaken any builds by diluting card types as they are “free” when in your hand.

I find the key is to focus on cards with value and what value they bring to your overall deck. I avoid a lot of cards that don't give gold early game because you need gold to buy more and better cards early. However some cards that give 5-6 power without combo I tend to buy even if they don't give gold. Also some cards combo better than others. A lot of the Psijic cards don't have any combo benefits and if they do it's typically something small like 2 power, so here I go for more overall value. If I get purple cards I focus more on getting more of them since they combo really well but I still like to avoid the ones that give one or two power if there is no combo as I feel they don't bring a lot off overall value.
