Help! Stuck in The Reach quest By Love Betrayed because "disguise" doesn't work.

Quest: By Love Betrayed, in The Reach
Objective: find Boss Trenlor's court.
Problem: the required disguise, which is obtained from a box, doesn't work and so I can't get through the next door to reach Boss Trenlor's Court.
This quest has been irking me for about a month now. I thought about dropping it, but since it's needed to finish zone achievements I keep banging my head against the wall with it. The problem is that try as I might, I can't get the box called "Box of Servant Uniforms" to actually produce a uniform and without this uniform one can't get through the next door to reach Boss Trenlor's court. Apparently the box is supposed to auto-equip a "uniform", as opposed to looting one which one then equips. Either way, the box has the usual activation option, but activating it does nothing. It neither auto equips nor produces a uniform item. The character goes through the usual activation animation but nothing happens, either visually or gameplay wise. I tried (must be about a dozen times now), going to the door afterwards anyway to try and open it, but it always results in the msg "you lack the proper disguise".
In accordance with suggestions from ESO CS, I tried all the following, to no avail:
Renaming (they said to "delete" them, but presumably renaming has the same effect without my losing all my addons plus settings) the Addons and SavedVariables folders and AddonSettings file. I checked that the game then recreated new and empty ones, which it did, so presumably that gave me a clean slate addon wise;
Logging out, waiting for the quest to reinitialise or whatever it does, logging in again later and retrying it (several times;
Doing other stuff then coming back days later;
/reloadui at the problematic disguise box;
Dropping the quest and starting it again (several times).
Nothing worked!
Does anyone know of a workaround for this problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
