I'm not sure they would need to be monitored. If it's private anything they can do won't hurt anyone else. It's more like a single player game version if I am reading the request correctly.

I would love to try ESO on A private server. Would it be able to make ESO vanilla work? I mean pre One tamriel? When I bought the game back in 2014 I bought a Physical copy with cd's. But maybe they don't contain any game files but launcher files?

Been thinking about that lately with all this *** about update 35.
I spent too much money, energy and time on this game to just throw it all away. If they gonna turn the game upside down, just let me play it offline the version i want to.

Even if that's not something they would think of now, someday this game is going to die.
Then what? *** the ones who still wanna play it?

Server based MMOs die. DRM based games die. Streaming services die. Remember this every time you look in the crown store 8)

Give it 30 years and you'll be playing old games from before 2015 because that's all the old games that will work. More modern games are tied to servers for anti-piracy reasons, they are often limited life because they licence content like music for a number of years only and so on.

Minecraft is a very very different game to ESO, as is Skyrim multiplayer mods and most of the other small server self hosting games.

    - You can't bring your minecraft or similar resources between servers
    - You can't level in cheat mode on one server then use the power on another
    - Administration is by the group not the game owner. That's critical because if if someone runs a Skyrim multiplayer setup with some of the more ... interesting .. mods then Microsoft Zenimax don't get the blame.
    - Any notion of 'score' or ranking is just a server thing not global

And honestly - Skyrim in multi player is much better for small group fun than ESO. Sure - it's got bugs (like ESO), some quests don't work in groups (like ESO) and it crashes occasionally (like ESO)

Too many toons not enough time

No. This is an MMO. Many of us enjoy it for the active world. There are plenty of other games that are private server based like Valheim and stuff if that’s more your jam. Not to mention private servers are so much more susceptible to exploits and hacks from what I gather.

I suppose I wouldn't mind so long as it doesn't impact performance. I have a caveat though. Nothing done in the private server should translate to the main server. So any materials you farm stay only on that server. In fact I would go so far as to say you would have to create a new character on that server that would be exclusive to that server only.

No Minecraft and Fallout 76 is designed to run on small decentralized servers.
Work for WOW as its so old, but you can not bring your private server stuff over in the real WOW for obvious reasons.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

Let me make sure I understand what you’re saying. A private server that is paid for with some number of subscriptions by people on that server?

And they play the game themselves with no interaction with the other population of people?

    Is that right?

If it's a private server, and characters are tied to them, I suppose that wouldn't matter.

I'd be interested in the option if it came with the ability to apply custom balance changes to the game too, like making overland content harder, letting me take 3 companions with me at a time into dungeons, increased drop rates for gear, reduced respawn rates for mobs etc. But otherwise I think there are far too many trope MMO design issues for this game to feel "better" in a private server. But a "balance your own game" in a similar way that many of us treat Skyrim modding... yeah I'd like that.

That's true of course. However, I did not have the impression that OP was thinking about an isolated server as he was talking about gathering ressources and trial gear. Espeically collecting trial gear would not need a private server since trials are instanced anyways.
    Maybe I'm wrong.

I agree and I would actually love to try a fresh start from scratch if that meant trying the game as it was at launch. Then trying out patch for patch.

I don't know anything about having a server, is it expensive or would a "normal" person be able to the admin for it and maintaining it etc? Anyone else have some experience about that

    No thanks.

Private servers have there own ' special ' rules that change the game.

So you just get a different game Forums to have different complaints.

Its no different than the original.

Not a good idea for this game.

I am using Fallout 76 as a quick reference point. This game isn't Valheim either.

private servers would most likely allow modding to be done to the server by the owner in alot of cases. Day Z is a perfect example, great game, again endless opportunities only the private servers made me blacklist it from my games played due to then toxic, abusive and infectious mentality in game....ESO already has issues in that area they have not fully addressed, i can only imagine how many players they would lose if it moved to private servers.

If you have gamepass, download Day Z, go to facebook join a Day Z group, some are ok.... most? horrible horrible places, especially if you look for a PVE/RP server with PVP zones where majority gear drops, allowing people to survive and build ect ...

I'd love to play ESO on a private server if it meant it would only be open to other players I invite and if it meant I could mod it with things like different damage scaling etc. Obviously any characters created for that server would be stuck on that server, likewise any cosmetics therefrom - although with AWA you'd probably have to get a whole new account for it, and I'd still be fine with that.

Maybe I want to take epic first person screenshots of me battling Rakkhat in godmode. Maybe I want to prance around an empty Tamriel in the emperor costume I will never earn on live. Maybe I just want to be able to fish in Imperial City in peace. Don't judge me.

PTS exists. You can more or less do whatever you want there and yet so few people utilise it.

I'd love a private server as well. So I can quest in peace without people taking my kills or interrupting my questing progress. People farming mobs whilst trying to kill them for a quest is very annoying. I've had instances where I had a target I had to kill for the DB and people saw me sneaking around him (waiting for the opportune moment) and killed him before I could. Then when he respawned it happened again. I had instances where doing another DB quest where I had to sneak around and some idiot runs straight through and aggros everyone and revealed me and I got a rather hefty bounty. It's very annoying. It happens everywhere. I've left areas to quest somewhere else, same thing. Dragging mobs over while getting a chest, taking kills, throwing mudballs at you while you're trying to kill something, playing a vampire and trying to feed then someone runs up and kills the target, ect...it gets old.

It does, and I do use the PTS (both for testing and for occasionally playing ESO as a single player game) but it's not persistent, and having to remake characters all the time is a bit of a buzzkill. It's also not as customizable as one would imagine a private server could be with mods. I'm not saying private servers are a great idea and necessary for the health of the game or anything, just saying I'd totally use one.

and that game is dead. 250 players play it daily. Private servers was supposed to fix the players crying they are getting griefed and restore survival as an endgame. However, the server cap was 12 people. why?! Deletes the whole purpose.

Not a great example. I would rather ZOS pay attention to keeping their player base with patch 35 incoming.

Sooooo.... I gather you believe that You should be able to play the game in the Style that You want.....

But No one else is allowed to play it according to how They want.

I know what you are saying. When I do a delve, I like to stop and loot every last sack, crate and barrel. I need to build up my Mats. Then halfway through I get passed by someone running through to the boss, and I know if I don't go with them, I will end up waiting around for the boss to respawn. So I adjust my play and run to go get credit for the boss kill.

Yeah, it kinda sux... but in an adult world we all have to have Some consideration for what Others may prefer.

If harvesting is a problem, it's always possible to make the nodes private. It does not affect botting of course - unless it's implemented as a massive nerf for everyone - but at least one gets to pick their nodes in peace.
