We've never seen "live" ship.
I thought "High Isle" give us this experience. But actually not.
All ESO ship is just boring decoration, no blood streaming ship out there.

The closest thing you'll ever experience in a ship battle is the one in Greenshade where you shoot giant fish and get boarded by teleporting troops. Come to think of it, I never tried jumping off the ship... I need to do that next time I get a character through that.

I hope ZOS is secretely working on water-underwater content. Add some diving, swap swimming animations with boats. What could possibly go wrong? ._ . So much water in game, so much unused space

I dont think it’s possible with ESO’s engine. I imagine if they tried doing this, our characters will keep rubberbanding to “stay in place” when we’re on a moving ship.

Anything related to moving character models in ESO has always been wonky. See the hookshot/grappling hook as an example.

Implementation of realistic sailing is like making a whole new game and probably it's not even possible to make in this old engine, but sure - they should add this as "small addition" to chapter :D

If they do implement sailing, everyone on board would likely be automatically banned for "exploit" anyway. Their 2 person mounts had that little problem.

Not only have we never seen moving ships, we've never seen moving vehicles of any kind. We have multiple different designs for carts and carriages in the game but all the NPC merchants walk, sometimes with a horse following them but the horse is never carrying or pulling anything.

It might be impossible with the game engine they're using, or something that would take a huge amount of work.

Guild Wars 2 managed it eventually, but that's a completely different engine so I'm not sure how comparable the two are. But originally that game was in a similar state - at most you'd see ships moving in cut scenes or they'd use 'tricks' like putting a ship or airship in a unique map where the skybox was animated to make it look like you were moving but functionally it was a stationary platform. Apparently it was impossible to do anything else because the game wouldn't support it. But various developers kept experimenting with it and the game is littered with odd iterations of vehicles in different releases, like flying platforms which do actually move and are mostly functional in a limited capacity, or a boat on a fixed path that players can ride. Eventually they cracked it and added mounts and boats and various other things.

I suspect ZOS are less likely to accept releasing something which is not just bugged but more of a prototype version that doesn't quite do what they wanted (I've always gotten the impression GW2 is treated as a bit of an experiment by the developers) so I doubt they'd add ships unless they got them properly functional, but I'd love to know if anyone at ZOS has ever tried and if they think it might be possible one day.

There is a moving ship in High Isle, actually. I was pretty astonished when I saw it pass.
Not a ship for players to be on, but still a moving ship.

There are lots of moving ships in the High Isle chapter, as well as one smaller boat making its rounds within the city of High Isle (you can attempt to jump on from the bridge, but the hitbox causes you to slide off. My understanding of it is that the boats are simply an entity (like a large NPC) and, in the same way you can't stand on bosses or NPCs properly, the same applies here, especially toward moving objects because the game won't update its position and have the player move accordingly.

It would be amazing if they could do something like that, but I don't think the engine would allow for it. It's already hard enough to make mechanics which move (flame jets in Frostvault on last boss, lasers in Frostvault, etc.) without there being some desync, I don't think they could realistically do it. If they did, it would be during a period of time where the player isn't in control of their character, meaning the fun aspect of it would be largely removed.

2003. Lineage 2 MMO had sailing on ships, sooo, everything is possible. Not that it was a pleasant experience tho, to wait 30min on stupid ship (even together with other players) while you go from point A to point B. Maybe first few times it was fun, but it quickly wears and is just a bother later in the game.

I should have specified 'before High Isle'. But as mentioned above the boats in High Isle, even the ones with people on, are likely NPCs that use a different model rather than something players could ride. (That's extremely common in games.)

Ultima Online had ships in 1998, including ones players could control. But both UO and Lineage 2 use different game engines to ESO so the fact that they can do it doesn't necessarily mean it's possible in ESO. It's a bit like saying a baseball should bounce like a basketball because they're both balls.

I hope the limited examples we've seen in High Isle are the start of ZOS experimenting with it and that they'll be able to figure something out, but I doubt it will be as easy as in a game which had that built in from the start.

The wind is pushing the ships forwards hence the sails billowing that way, but the flags are flying towards the back as if the wind is blowing that way

Yeah its a common mistake kids (and even grown up persons) do when drawing sails.

Since the ship is powered only by the wind that's blowing in a direction (and it's evident from the full sails), all the banners aboard will fly in that direction and not in the opposite.

The wrong idea which make you think the opposite is good, is ship movement dragging things, and it would be true, for example, if you throw a rope full of knots in the water to measure ship's speed... in that case the rope would ofc extend backward (and btw it's how the speed was measured, thence the word "knots" for marine speed). For a flag it's just false unless the ship is moving faster than the wind.

Banners flying in the opposite direction can happen only if the ship goes against the wind, but in that case sails would not be full (most of them would just be furled)... and in the case of a steam or motor powered ship masts and sails would probably not be present at all. Sails did remained in effect a little after the introduction of steam engine on ships (to be able to maneuver even if coal was finished and to preserve it) but they disappeared pretty quickly... in that case the same problem could arise with the smoke (if the ship had a smokestack), but both direction would be good as long as both the smoke and the flags are moving the same direction.

As others have said the flags are blowing opposite of the wind.

Ship sails are like airplane wings in that the wind flowing over them causes a low pressure zone on them causing the suction that pulls the ship forward.

The sails in those pictures are being pushed forward by the wind, but the flags are going in the opposite direction.
