A Mortal's Touch - Impossible in a group

So...2 player group, we get to the 3 chests. I purged and unlocked 1, wife the other 2. At that time, neither of us could purge the other chests, nor did her's count for me, nor mine for her. We both had to abandon the quest, disband the group, get the quest, then run it solo past that point.
