Always lore-friendly names, although I acknowledge Away-From-Keyboard might be pushing it. ;)

generally i give my characters lore-appropriate names, (see: Strikes-with-Arcane, Garrus Loridius, Ashes-of-Arcane, etc.) but very often i will try and sneak a reference to another game i like or maybe even an anime or something.

example, my "Moonlight Maiden" character sorta functions as an Elden Ring reference, as the character i played in that game ended up being a dedicated sorcery character, with the sorcery branch of magic being associated with the moon in that game's lore

my Garrus Loridius's character's first name acts as a reference to Garrus Vakarian, my (second) favourite character in the Mass Effect series

my Bolgrog the Sinh character acts as a reference to Sinh from Dark Souls 2, a poison affinity dragon, and he himself is a stam DK so it works out

for a while i had a khajiit character named Avaricious Akashi, a somewhat subtle reference to an Azur Lane character though that char has since been deleted

my Sinnia Lavellan character acts as a reference to my character from Dragon Age: Inquisition

basically yea. i like squeezing in references to other games or anime that i like though i do like to try and make it as appropriate for the elder scrolls setting as i can

I use names related to my centers of interest in real life. That can go from using the name of a family member, or a combo of words related to a rl event, or a song, or based on something related to my work, a movie I saw, and so on... It can really be anything.

I use a naming scheme which is completely unrelated to games or popular culture which results names not offending murricans. I did try using lore friendly name for my argonian maid but was forced to rename because someone took offense.

When I see players' names, it may reveal a few things about the player him/herself:

(below, some are real, some invented so bear with me - ROAR!)

Mmmmm I tend to go with fitting names...though not truly lore friendly. More trope friendly' probably.

I have been gaming with the names Ariachne (every game gets a character with this name since 1999), Nyad, Aria'Dawn and Nyobe for over 20 years in mmorpg gaming...so...while not lore friendly...they can fit in just fine. For christmas one year, my mother (who I introduced to MMORPGs and she came to love them) once addressed my christmas gifts to Ariachne.....like mom????? Thats my game name....my dad was SO CONFUSED as he handed out gifts. Not to mention, my mother pronounced it wrong.....just saying......

My favorite names (on others) are the clever lore friendly joke names....usually on Khajit and Argonian. Love them. I do admire some folks ability and cleverness in naming.

I tend to heavily research names so they're lore friendly.

I have a single character who doesn't have their actual name, if only because they're one of the House of Reveries, and trying to think of a single word name that hasn't already been taken is really hard lmao. They have a placeholder name for now, and probably forever.

Your character's name can have more than one part - like "xxxx of Tel Mora" for example. This way you can have pretty much any first name you like, just add a location to it and you will most likely be fine.
Doesn't that make some dialogues a bit awkward, when NPCs address you by the full multi-part name?

You get used to it. In some ways it's not really any different to all the places your character has to ask questions which they really should know the answers to, because of a lack of race/class/other background info specific dialogue.

Would have voted for: Self-made names!

I just spamtype something in the namefield, and then make it sound good and to my liking. The letter "a" is one of my favorite letters. The only characters I do not do this on are my argonians. Which I give funny names.

Offensive/criminal names, promotional names, and mistyped names are a big NO to me. And I do not like seeing players with those kinds of names in game. As it draws the real world into the game, which shouldn't happen. When players pick names from other IP's, I'm fine with that, but I always think they could have been much more creative.

I've always done lore appropriate names since I've been interested in TES. I also like adding titles to their names because it makes my characters feel more personal, reveal a bit about their personality, etc. Ex. my altmer called Naicirye Iceblood instead of just Naicirye. My characters all have last names as well but I like title descriptors a bit more.

    A bit of both.
My current Khajiit character: J'hattee the Geek - I did to be both lore friendly (it doesn't look out of place for a Khajiit, other than is there such thing as a Geek in ESO?...)

But at the same time - it works with my name and the other stuff I do.

I prefer lore-friendly and somehow appropriate names. My Argonian, for example, is Xil-Pactli. Several NPC Argonians have names starting with „Xil-“, and „Cipactli“ is said to be a word for „crocodile“ in Nahuatl, so I found that name appropriate.

I've named a couple of mine after characters from Jack Vance's "Dying Earth" stories. One of them is called "Liane the Wayfarer". NPC in Alik'r call him by name all the time. I suppose the same is true for the character "Five Claw".

Lore-friendly names for the most part, or even just names with all a shared theme, like the person’s username. I see A LOT of goofy joke names in end-game PVE and PVP that it easily burns out funny names for me. It stops being funny after the 50th joke dps name or dumb pvp name that’s either a trollish name or a build-related name. Though I do admit seeing the occasional meme name in a random place in Tamriel does give me a giggle. Literally saw a character named Wocky Slush randomly, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

Most of mine are lore-friendly. Occasionally I draw inspiration from other media. I've had and deleted many, many characters, but the current survivors include Ashaka the All-Maker, Valaerion Brightflame, Nelacar the Untamed, Shaman Thog, Hides-Behind-His-Friends, Swims-Beneath, Ilyria of the Deep, and Stares-Into-The-Abyss. He should have been Gazes, but I had a blonde moment when I was naming him.

I use generally-fantasy-ish names mostly. But I wouldn't call them "lore-friendly" since I don't pay attention to the actual lore-based racial/language/etc styles in doing so. (i.e, they're not 'joke' or 'media' names, but they have no bearing on lore).

Tisiphonae (bosmer), Aestanya (dunmer), Khaelani (redguard), Rensedre (dunmer), Therasena (breton), Aelarian (bosmer)... things like that. They might end up being close to something from history or media, but it's not deliberate. Some of them are names I've re-used over the decades across multiple games. /shrug

And one joke name - my mule, Cargo Mistress. (who wears civilian wear appropriate for a dock worker or laborer; Nord)
