QoL improvement suggestion - fast character swap

i think it'd be great to add an extra option to the system menu (esc), "switch character" that would then bring up a menu of all your characters. select the one you want to play and one loading screen later you're on the character

is the current system not that big a deal? sure, obviously, thats why i call it a quality of life improvement since removing one loading screen out of the equation is a nice little speeding up of the process of changing characters

I have suggested the same things many times only get the response from other posters: "but they have to go through all that!"

I completely disagree. Do both steps (Unload the current character and load the other one) without the stop at the character selection screen! That would allow all necessary processing to happen, but avoid the need for us to interact with one screen in the middle of the process!

BDO has this feature. Would be nice but I think it could open up too many potentials for Bugs to be worth it.

Why? Just don't stop at the character screen. No bugs would be likely with just automatically starting the next step in the process there.

You're loading character details while you have a different character loaded. And not just for one characters, several characters.

It's not as simple as you make it sound.

Like I'm not opposed to the system in general, but if it hurts general performance, I'd rather just go back to character selection.

You didn't read what I wrote. Go through the EXACT SAME PROCESS AS NOW, just don't stop at the character loading screen. How would that be what you noted? It would just need a trigger to "keep going" instead of stopping there.

That said their system should be able to have code like:

// Logout the current character
// Login the new character

Though the process I noted would not require that, just the need to avoid stopping on the character selection screen.

Some other games do it, but I suspect they were coded that way from the start whereas ESO was not, and it would require ZOS to change the system code in a way that would take time and resources including a lot of testing/fixing in order to provide a QoL improvement that most players don't seem to have a need for judging by the comments on the few occasions it gets raised. It's certainly not something that bothered me when I was playing multiple characters pre-AwA.

The character select screen is not the problem, however as my characters is at the same location most of the time keeping the instance and just letting me switch character would help a lot and would reduce server load a bit.

I would love to see this. My load times are terrible, but the time out on character selection is comparatively short so I can’t (for example) just walk away to make tea while I wait. At least not until I’ve selected a character, by which point I’ve been sitting there for several minutes. It’s tedious and frustrating. Even if they just glued the two load screens back to back it would be better, because then as I mentioned I could make tea, check Discord or whatever.

This is something I support. I am always losing track of guild conversations in the logout to login time. It'd be neat to carry on a real conversation while swapping through toons for the daily.
