Giving a disagree button actually lowers the quality of voice of dissenting discussion. Completely ignoring outcome of options does not lend itself to equality of voice. A disagree button makes someone less likely to post why they disagree, which means valid information is lost to the disagree side of the debate. Agreement does NOT produce new information. Disagreement can also discourage people from posting their opinion if they see disagrees in high number, but agree with the post being disagreed with. The result is threads with echo chambering, where both sides of a debate are not presented equally in power. The goal should be equity in the debates, to prevent echo chambering and to allow both sides to fully flesh out opinions. Not blindly counting how many buttons each group has.

I completely agree with you. and in addition to the reaction, I will leave a comment. The image you attached reminded me of a hiking trip where we loaded not an equal amount of weight in a backpacks but the weight that allowed everyone to walk with equal speed and comfort. But this exposes the hidden problem of vulnerable individuals and vulnerable groups of individuals who are given more benefits. The most important thing is that vulnerability groups are chosen fairly, isn't it? But thinking about global justice does not apply to this topic...
ps/perhaps these people should be fined ;)

LOL Ok you're serious? In that case, you saying "I disagree" and nothing more is a perfect exemplar of why this would be beneficial. Those two words, with no rationale or justification, contributed little to nothing....certainly no more than a reaction would have contributed - that is 100% undeniable because you literally typed out what the reaction text might be.

Your argument; "the only valid contributions come from those who engage in actual discussion on the topic" falls over completely when you used your first post in this thread to do the exact opposite....it sounds like you had a legitimate opinion on this idea....and you expressed that opinion with absolutely no further contribution (until your second post here). You did create noise for no value where an alternate channel might have existed.

That is what many people here will do for ANY suggestion.

Not having any "vote down" button is a trend many places to make people not feel bad. I don't think it works well, but it is a "standard" of sorts.

I hate dislike buttons in nearly every website but eso forums would benefit from it, why? Because most of the time when i want to disagree with somebody my post gets removed for back and forth or baiting! So either add a disagree button or more preferably cool down the moderation!

So many posts get moderated or reported that I think it's fair to have a way to disagree without risk of getting banned or other similar consequences.

I find this will be a safe way for those of silence ones to express disagreement.

I think this would shut down discussion more than help anything. People already voice opposing viewpoints and get agrees and awesomes for it from like-minded people on both sides of debates, why put something negative in that will just turn people off from posting anything?

Some people create echo chamber like it looks pretty so we should have it or if you disagree with me you are just s bad person.

Back and forth discussion ends up moderated or someone reports baiting to slightest disagree.

There will probably be enough people who "disagree" simply because the option is there. If you really want a fruitful discussion that includes a contrary opinion, then this will not be achieved with a smiley, but only by writing your own opinion.

Some us can't safely disagree though. A disagree button creates safe zone for others

Why not? It all comes down to being respectful, so why shouldn't someone be able to safely disagree?

They could alternatively just remove reactions altogether.

I don't see why positive reactions should be allowed. People can just type if they agree with something or find it awesome or whatever.

There is an option to disagree... you just don't hit the "Agree" button... ;)

But that disagreement does not get recorded, and therefore, that voice is not heard.

Unless of course you declare that Every player in the game that does not hit Agree is to be recorded as a Disagree.

Could you imagine how hard it would be to read a thread that is just interspersed with agree and disagree posts? They would just end up being visual noise and an auto scroll past

The problem is that there is no way to actually politely disagree with people in a text context in a place like this. It will most always come across badly. In order to actually politely disagree you need to have it be more personal or the tone is lost. This is why you often see /s in comments meant to be sarcastic - because at some point people started realizing sarcasm was not coming across and people were taking offense or being hurt when it was not intended. It's also why you see countless deleted posts in places like reddits. People downvote for no reason other than to be idiots. I have zero doubt that in this forum it would be exactly the same.

Frankly, there is no real reason I can think of to have any kind of disagree button other than a purely ego one where you are so bothered that someone has an thought, belief, opinion that is not what you like or want that you have to push back and do so in the most lazy way possible. And to be blunt, forums should PROMOTE discussion not make it easy for people to not bother with it. That's the whole point of a forum, no?

If they want people to type out their disagreements then they need to stop removing posts for "baiting". The current rules directly work against promoting discussion and only promote echo chambers.
