Giving a disagree button actually lowers the quality of voice of dissenting discussion. Completely ignoring outcome of options does not lend itself to equality of voice. A disagree button makes someone less likely to post why they disagree, which means valid information is lost to the disagree side of the debate. Agreement does NOT produce new information. Disagreement can also discourage people from posting their opinion if they see disagrees in high number, but agree with the post being disagreed with. The result is threads with echo chambering, where both sides of a debate are not presented equally in power. The goal should be equity in the debates, to prevent echo chambering and to allow both sides to fully flesh out opinions. Not blindly counting how many buttons each group has.

LOL Ok you're serious? In that case, you saying "I disagree" and nothing more is a perfect exemplar of why this would be beneficial. Those two words, with no rationale or justification, contributed little to nothing....certainly no more than a reaction would have contributed - that is 100% undeniable because you literally typed out what the reaction text might be.
Your argument; "the only valid contributions come from those who engage in actual discussion on the topic" falls over completely when you used your first post in this thread to do the exact opposite....it sounds like you had a legitimate opinion on this idea....and you expressed that opinion with absolutely no further contribution (until your second post here). You did create noise for no value where an alternate channel might have existed.
I think this would shut down discussion more than help anything. People already voice opposing viewpoints and get agrees and awesomes for it from like-minded people on both sides of debates, why put something negative in that will just turn people off from posting anything?
There will probably be enough people who "disagree" simply because the option is there. If you really want a fruitful discussion that includes a contrary opinion, then this will not be achieved with a smiley, but only by writing your own opinion.

Why not? It all comes down to being respectful, so why shouldn't someone be able to safely disagree?

They could alternatively just remove reactions altogether.
I don't see why positive reactions should be allowed. People can just type if they agree with something or find it awesome or whatever.
