Gliders!

I was in Wrothgar and near a cliff edge and I thought, this would be the most epic glider ride ever. Would you please consider bringing gliders into the game? It's not flying. Everyone would still be primary ground based but it would be hella fun. We could have glider training like we do mount training where we put points into the duration of glide time. There could be cool skins like fire and feathers etc. You could make a buck and we could have a blast! PWEEEEASE!

I doubt the engine/code/servers could support any new mechanics. We can't even get new weapon animations. It's a shame because gliders were a fun additon to other games. ESO has been my favorite for a while now. It's sad to see so much of its potential held back.

There was never any real intent on zone design to include the z axis in free movement. The skyboxes would not allow flight in zones, as is..

I've tried gliding from cliff tops frequently. I usually manage to achieve a descending glide angle of around 90 degrees. :D

Maybe the code improvements for stability and the future of ESO will allow this.

I like the idea of adding gliders (one summer I was mainly playing Breath of the Wild and Guild Wars 2 and really missed the option in other games), but I'm not sure how much use it would be in this game.

Not only are a lot of the maps relatively flat with lots of invisible walls around raised sections, but a lot of surfaces don't allow you to stand or walk on them. An easy example is the stable roof just below the crafting area in Daggerfall, you can drop onto it from the path above but your character will slide off the edge as if they're on an icy slope. I suspect in a lot of cases trying to get up to a suitable point to glide off or trying to land somewhere after gliding would be more hassle than it's worth.

(I'm not sure why GW2 supports it, or flying mounts. I think it's pretty unlikely they planned that from the start and the took 3 years to add gliding and 5 to add mounts, but until they did I think it was arguably bad design to have such tall maps when a lot of that space wasn't being used, and to have so many places players could stand when they weren't actually supposed to be there.)

I know the devs are against any kind of slowed descent or flight. They've talked about how players have used mounts to get into places they shouldn't so I doubt they'd take it one step further.

A while back during Summerset or Morrowind or one of those updates there was a bug where if you blocked and walked backwards while falling you would slow fall. That was some of the most fun stuff right there. I would love to glide around the cliffs and crags in overland. Cool movement options are lacking here and there in the game.

If you play out the Coldharbour main quest, there is a point early on where the player floats down gently from a very large height while inside a bubble, and depending on how you jump off, you can “glide” quite a long distance. There was also a patch where players could float safely off cliffs by holding block, which was amazing while it lasted. Therefore, some form of gliding is not really outside of the capabilities of the engine, but many zones would not handle gliding well due to how they are constructed. There are a lot of hidden barriers in every zone.

If they ever add any kind of flying in this game, it will have to be confined to specific new zones. There's no way they're going back and updating the engine to allow for flying in old zones. They may as well remake the game at that point, lol

This could be fixed with better zone design, it's a very poor excuse.

It's quite funny because nearly every other game I play allows some form of slow fall or gliding if not just straight flight like jetpacks. I'm not advocating for flying, I think that would be terrible for this game. The game could really use some "leaper" type mounts though or at the very least some kind of gliding to make some zones more fun. Until then I guess the most efficient way to access places like Rimmen Necropolis are to run south out of Rimmen and leap to your death and respawn to walk to the door.

i'd rather like to see that when jumping off a high point, that the mount works like an airbag, splattering the animal but letting the player survive

One of the best things about playing a priest in WoW was the levitate ability that allowed you to float safely to the ground from pretty much any height. It's one of the few things that I really miss about WoW that ESO doesn't offer.

I doubt gliders will ever happen, since sliders are apparently already problematic for the anti-cheat detection system. Gliders would probably be problematic for the same reason.

No but they could make things like flight paths in WoW. Since it's preset movement you don't need the xyz axis in the same way. Just like the dragons in Elsewyr. They move on a pre-determined path which is why that "flying" can be in the game.

Elsweyr, and so many other vertically designed zones, would be so much more fun with some kind of gliding (I think I'd fork over my soul for a glider that looked like the wings on a wraith of crows. I was supremely disappointed when the poly morph that came out didn't have the wings >_> )

There would be so many opportunities to create cool, "world boss" themed gliders with specific aesthetics associated with them, special gliders that can be reconstructed via antiquities, and other such in game activities. It would be nice if glider appearances could be in the collection menu so that they could be equipped whenever you please.

I'd had high hopes of some kind of vertical climbing abilities/parkour development when the grapple bow was released...but they never did much, if anything, with that at all. It's occasionally used in random quests, trials, and dungeons, but I had been hoping that it would be used to a greater degree in the more vertical areas of the world. Grapple points could have been hidden in rocks and on objects, for example, that would have made grappling feel more natural while still allowing the developers to decide where and when we grapple.

I would hope that if they ever implement gliding, it could be used far more freely than the rather disappointing grapple bow!

I'm sure barely any veteran remembers this as it's part of a Quest in Coldharbor, but it's the Library one, after you retrieve the Ayleid stone thingy from a floating island, the Ayleid King says he'll give you some of his Magic to safely jump from the island. Basically you jump off, then a blue orb surrounds you and the game freezes your body and "glides" you down slowly at a certain angle until you hit ground again. This is as close the game gets to what the OP wants.
