1. Well, the spear is very easy to make. It’s a lot easier than heating metals and creating mauls or maces.
I’m surprised the goblins we encounter don’t already have spears, since it’s a lot easier to make them versus learning to smelt metals.
2. Spears provide longer range, this would help a lot with fighting in Cyrodiil where players who are outnumbered can use a spear to quickly limit the enemies around them.
3. Spears fit in more with the “beast” races, such as Argonians. I remember playing Morrowwind as a kid (yeah I know it was rated M), and the Argonian in the little booklet that came with the game had a spear. Plus, since they’re really good swimmers, I figured they would also be really good at spear fishing. On Survivor you see people with spears fishing not swords or maces underwater.
4. Spears would focus more on crit damage and bleed damage. Because they’re so pointy, it’s gonna crit more and because their sides are so sharp, you’re going to bleed more versus being hit with a maul, mace, or sword.
5. Spears can be thrown. The spear can work as a handheld melee weapon or it becomes an aerodynamic tossing device of bleeding and pointy critical damage. I have not worked out how you would get the spear back, perhaps it would be a daedric spear that materializes after it is used?
6. Spears will add more to the dungeon and world overland drops, leading to more farming after the sticker book is filled. This will create another viable market for guild traders and people who sell goods in ESO.
