Make dyes apply consistently on armor/weapons? (Standardize dyes)

ESO has many pretty dyes for us to unlock.
However, these dyes drastically change in appearance based on the material they are applied to. Metals are usually more shiny. Cloths are all over the place. Blacks become grays. Yellows become oranges/greens. Reds become oranges. Purples can be grays/blues..... Each armor style interprets hues differently too so it’s often guesswork to find the correct colors for your outfit. Anyone who has dyed their gear/outfits/costumes at a Dye Station will notice this and struggle to find exactly what they are looking for.

The biggest offenders are when you are completely unable to match colors between different armor style pieces, or when your armor style can only become gray even when using the darkest blacks in the game.

So the question is simple... would you like dyes to be standardized?
This would make dyes appear consistently the same regardless of armor style or apparent material type.

Yes - Standardize them. Dyes need to appear consistently on all items when applied

I agree. I at least want fabrics to dye consistently and metals to dye consistently. That is, if the same dye looks different from metal to fabric, I would be okay. But I would like the same dye on different fabrics to be consistent. The fact is that some materials do take dyes differently in the real world, but in a game I just want to look a certain way.

Also, make Daedric Red different from Materials #10. To me at least, they look the same.

The problem isn't the dyes. It's the fact that older styles don't have their channels set up as well.

Yes, it would be nice if it worked well, but you'll find that most newer styles are much better at keeping the dyes colors. Fixing that would involve going back and redoing the textures for all of the older motifs, and they're very unlikely to change any of the old textures. Especially after the last time they changed things with the outfit styles (RIP old Redguard... but tbh I'm perfectly okay with the Orc armor change)

Like tomofhyrule said, older styles were designed to hold colors only as far as to match the tier they were crafted in and were made to match close to each others. With the ancestral motifs ZOS is updating older styles without changing the older styles, and is probably the most we can expect given the reaction they got years ago for drastically changing some styles. Doesn't change the fact they would use a touch up or that the ancestral motifs are more trouble than they're worth for many.

This is my opinion. So guess I'm somewhere inbetween the poll choices. I like that cloth, leather and metal have different look and texture, but the same material should dye the same way. As someone who often combine different styles I'm very familiar with how different styles vary and are all over the place so I need to use different dyes to get them to match.

Although this is unlikely to be a change that's possible to do with older styles. Because it's texture of the item based, not the dyes, and they don't change old items. They should be better at this with newer styles, though, but this issue still appear.
    RIP old Redguard

May you bless us with your presence once again soon.

Another option I'd like to see is 2 different version of the same dye. One could be "matte" and the other "gloss"

Some of the dyes are the furthest from what the swatch color is. Sone of the outfits seriously do not dye well at all.
Is it too much trouble too have just simple base colors? Black for example

Interesting ideas here :o I should have included an “Other” option in this poll. Both of these ideas sound awesome to me as well.

No because it invalidates the choices people have already been making with their dyes. I like the way my characters look right now.

I'd rather have four additional dye channels that allowed us to change the texture for the cloth, leather, metal and fur for each item. That way we could adjust their wear and tear / shininess to the same level but set it at the level we want. Dyes should then work consistently but with the texture we choose. We would also then be able to select different outfit items with fur but match the fur texture and colour which is currently almost impossible to do as most of them use completely different textures and colours/shades.

Would be nice to be able to dye medium bloodforge chest brown like most other leather/cloth pieces in the game

Totally agree; moreover, please please please do something about the store-bought dyes. 99.9% of the time, no matter the colors, they resemble ridiculously washed out pastel shades.

That's a good idea. DCUO has something like this that you can equip to alter how the materials/appearance works. It overlays the current appearance. Not saying to take this idea one for one, but the idea has been explored in a few games. And it works while being completely optional.

The tight suede outfit from the crown store the one with Balmoral in the title, apply the same dye to her and get three different colors when I want them to uniform.

For someone who is OCD this is torture.

Absolutely. This is a great idea. I've never understood why the black I apply to pants is black, but when I apply it to the top, it's almost blue. Granted, materials sometimes hold color differently. This is also a really big undertaking to fix, so I doubt it'll happen.

    But it's a great idea :D

No. I prefer seeing the choices I already made. I don't think it's even possible to standardize the dyes given the way shading layers on different items will look.

And I also don't want to see current motifs ruined by a botched job altering them.

Be careful what you wish for, you may just get it and find that its done horribly just like AWA was.

Something like this is what I would prefer as well, since then it will keep the current looks intact and just add more options.

Speaking of options, more matte dyes please! Shiny dyes are nice but they generally only look good on fancy dresses and the like, matte dyes are way more useable especially with the very down to earth TES aesthetic.

the store bought dyes need to be permanently unlocked dye colors, as they are right now they are a massive waste of crowns since it is a 1 time consumable that you cant even preview what it looks like, if i get these from rewards (i think there are some through level up rewards or occasionally daily logins) i usually just delete them right away

Leather is the worst. Some leather pieces don't seem to hold dye at all while others are spotty and barely colored.

I'm fine with metal being somewhat shiny (but not too much), and cloth and leather being somewhat textured, but not with the inconsistency in how deep the colors are on these pieces.

ah, i just refused to use them because:
    1. its a single use consumable item that your paying for
    2. you HAVE to use those 3 color presets, you cant say use only 1 or 2 of those colors or in any other combination you wanted

If it's at all possible to do then I would really like to see dyes standardized even if it may cause me to re-dye some of my character's outfits. I recall some months ago I was trying to make Hollowjack work for my dragonknight, but every red that I used on the flap for the chest would come out as more purple than red.

This could work as a fair "middle ground" for changing how dyes work. Might be a little tricky to set that up correctly.
