That vet Vateshran last boss fight is over the top in it's penalizing melee DPS. I'm watching videos of mag characters just standing in one spot easily DPSing down the beam chain mobs. On melee, I have to DPS it while backing up AND avoiding the mobs behind me and the AOEs dropping behind me.

I breezed through the entire arena and then get to this mechanic and can't even get a trash mob to half before I explode.

No wonder I'm the only melee DPS left in any trial I run.

If you take a look at the defenses of the mobs in there, particularly the various boss mobs, it has a very hard bias toward magicka characters right there, in addition to magicka having an easier time getting penetration to begin with.

It's totally doable with stamina and melee, but it is objectively harder to do so.

    S.

Yeah, I've run it a ton on normal to get the bow and the dye. I run it Blue > Red > Green so I end up with full health and stam buffs.

The issue is simple game physics. DPSing a mob that is walking towards you causes the other mobs to stack behind you, making it impossible to back up. You can't melee from behind because you can't cross the beams. You can't melee from the side because the beams are there. You can't peel off and kill the adds that are preventing you from backing up because you don't have the time before he explosion.

It's doable...I've broken through the chain several times, it's just extremely touchy vs. a mag character who just stands there and parses on them.

Yet another example of ESO's thinly veiled and very odd favoritism towards mag.

Have you tried it with a bow? Magicka and Stamina aren't so different these days, both parse highest with melee weapons, but there are certainly encounters where swapping to a ranged weapon is best.

Agreed, it might have lost it's bite but Bow is far from worthless. There's also Silver Bolts for people who don't mind the cost.

That all being said I fight in melee in Vateshran Hollows all the time. I'll typically go in with the Pale Order Ring or Death Dealer's Fete while constantly keeping my buffs up. Also have an AoE spammable for the final fight for clearing the enemies out, and of course the ghosts that close in on you. Although tab targeting could help with the ghosts to, but it might be hard to see the 1-hitKO beam while your view is obscured by the bone colossuses.

Really enjoying when I'm getting "target out of range" on melee attacks and so I let it come a step closer and "Bam, void tetherer. Dead."

    Good times.

I personally like staves but trying to optimize a wood elf, orc or any other stamina race feels like I'm just nerfing myself because of how magicka based most dungeons and trials mechanics are. There should be positive and negatives for both but as it is right now, going magicka is a no brainer, even with stamina races your better choice is magicka because you can't dps while being dead.

Kill adds before triggering the mechanic even if they're not active. Continue fighting boss till mechanic activates. If dps is the issue, then save your ultimate for the mechanic. You only need to kill one and you get plenty of time to do so before they all reach the center.

Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

While I don't run stamina dps, this fight is only slightly rougher on melee magicka builds than ranged, and my melee magicka (dk and Templar) actually were my first two to get spirit slayer.
Going into a tether phase with multiple shade colossi active is very rough. There's some judgment involved here on when to dps a colossus away from the boss so as not to push, when to stack, when you can ignore the tether adds because you'll be able to push her to a void realm phase, and that in turn depends on your dps, resources and the status of the fight.

Acid spray always does the job well, even when other enemies are standing in the way, the 20 meter AOE cone spam can bore a hole through all of it and let you step outside, but single target abilities tend to do the job much faster

I haven’t really tried pure melee in there but I know the feeling about melee fighting in general. ESO has a tendency, especially in earlier dungeons, to force people away from a target with quick killing AOEs around some fights. It just feels like there’s less room for error up close

Now some of the newer dungeons tend to penalize ranged players with popcorn AOEs that form at your feet, and it can lead even deeper into the meme of bad archers running around, further and further from healers

It is completely doable on melee dps; in fact, since melee dps is usually higher, you can literally 100%-0% her without ever doing any mechanics, which sends her into the side portal mechanic. Kill the add inside, come back and repeat, this time 30%-0%. Do that twice more and she's dead. Without ever touching or doing any of the mechanics. And yes, that includes the circle of adds that shrink, they disappear if she's pushed/killed.

Hmm. While I've been able to just burn most of the ring phases on some characters, even on my best vvh runs I can't burn her to 10% within the very first tether phase, which for me usually comes up when she's 60-70% health. You're pulling some insane numbers there to make that work.

Agree. A friend plays melee, so he back bars a bow. He will use only the bow on certain fights because it is more challenging for melee. On the rare occasion we have a pug in our group we notice some melee continuously die because they stick to melee and seem to be oblivious to the obvious tells suggesting to get out of the area.

Nothing wrong with such a design.

    VERY helpful. Thanks!

I'm still having a lot of trouble targeting the void tether mobs. Even when the arena is completely empty of trash mobs, my melee skills don't hit most of the time.

I noticed you're using what looks like an AOE skill for the void tethers -- button 1 on your front bar -- what skill is that? Targeting these things with a melee skill is completely frustrating. One pixel too far away and it doesn't hit. One pixel too close and you die to the tether. (I may be exaggerating a BIT but it's really touchy.).

I assume this is a bug or sync error as on my screen I'm nearly nose to nose with the mob and still out of range.
