What the secretly hidden super advantage of fully leveled riding skills?

What exactly is that super thing you get after fully leveling your mount skills? I mean, I can't imagine anything not happening, after the extremely tedious 1% per 20hr limit, other than some extra speed, extra stamina and carry capacity alone. Can it? Why else would this part have been designed as tedious as it is now? Crown sales for lessons? No one in their right mind spends money on that bit, right?
If each character needs 1800 hours minimum to level up riding skills to max, it must be something really really really special, with super advantages. I must have missed it, because I'm not seeing it.

Of course, I know there is nothing other than speed, stamina and some carry capacity to gain. I just want to vent on how stupid I think this skill leveling has been designed (among a few other things).

Just, why?

Cyrodiil, farming nodes, it makes a huge difference.
The design itself of a time gate is absurd and i think its a bad lazy design. Not needed and needs to be redone.

Those things used to be tied TO THE INDIVIDUAL MOUNT.

Think about that, you buy a new horse, it's effectively useless for 60+ days.

But yes people in fact do spend money on it because they're impatient.

Could not disagree more. Levelling up every mount would be brutal. I have 9 characters and at least 20 mounts. And I didn't buy the mounts. Got them through events, rewards, and back when they used to give out crown crates for free with the daily rewards.

Go to Cyrodiil and do the zone questline to get the two Alliance War skill lines and the Continuous Attack passive. It won't let you ride at full speed, but it will help save your sanity while you're slowly leveling up your mount speed.

That would be super infuriating! I'm glad I never got to deal with it in this game and certainly not in any other I played.

Apparently, the only incentive would be to sell crowns. This doesn't look to be designed by a gamer. This is designed by a banker.

It’s a system to make you login everyday and play the game a bit so you don’t stop playing. It’s pretty similar to freemium games login rewards. With the daily rewards, endeavors, first bg/random dungeon and daily quests, i think they should change this system so it’s not a login grind on your characters.

I have 18 character with max mounting skills and it was painful. I wouldn’t enjoy doing it again if they raise the character cap.

I don't have a problem with training the character's riding skills. But having to do it by 90 increments with a 20hr cooldown is just absurd.
Also, you have to pay 22,500 gold in total for some 300 gold worth advantage.

    Just why?

For me personally, to level up the speed to max brings no real added value, apart from covering the long distances in Cyrodiil. If it's only for PvE, I believe it's better to level up to a speed where we feel comfortable, without maxing.

The thing is that our mount stumbles on every peanuts on the floor, slowing down every times. Because of that:
    - Off road with mount is a bother to me so I stay on the road, so that regularly, I get faster running on my feet while cutting short off the road.
    - Over short distances, am faster running than mounting-riding/stumbling-dismounting.
    - For careful approach, max speed is for me too much and I dismount.

All in all, in the end, I don't use my mount that much and I regret a bit that I did max up speed. On the other hand, I recommend maxing stamina and bag. :)
I'm out of my mind, feel free to leave a message... PC/NA

I'm wondering the same thing after fully leveling mount skills with eight characters and nearing that with two. The advantages of speed and carry capacity are obvious, but now I'm wondering if leveling mount stamina more than 20 points was truly necessary. I rarely can bother pressing shift as long as it would take all the stamina dry up. On the other hand, I did the mount leveling at the same time as daily writs and so it took only an extra minute or so per character per day. So why, but then again, why not? If I make more characters, I'll see if I bother with anything else than capacity and speed.

And yes, the design looks like it's purposely dull. An obvious ploy to get crown store sales, as others have said. Looking from a pure game-design perspective, there has to be more interesting ways to level the mounts without making it too fast or too slow (like it is now).

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

As a former WoW player, I really dislike the ESO riding skill leveling. During my WoW time, leveling riding skills was something that unlocked at player level. After reaching a certain level you could buy riding skills. First skill allowed using normal mounts at 60% speed increase. Second skill was for using epic mounts at 100% speed increase, as well as reducing the chance of being slapped off your mount as well. Stamina on mounts was a non issue, since it wasn't a thing at all.

In eso, we get only 60% after a ton of time and a load of gold, regardless of mount type. The advantages don't justify the tedious time wall it has now.

Very true. The only reason I did it was because it was relatively convenient when combined with writs (which have much bigger rewards for the time consumed). Something like the WoW system you described would be much better. But well, fortunately it could be worse, like the leveling would still be per mount.

The lack of speed is very noticeable once you get used to a fully trained character.

It ends up being more than 1% riding speed once you add Major Gallop and Gifted Rider, as those are multiplicative. With both of those, it's 1.4% effective speed per point of speed training, or 84% total speed (out of 287% total possible) if you forgo training completely. That's nearly 30% of max possible mount speed coming from stable lessons alone. It makes a big difference in terms of getting places in a timely manner but also a huge QoL difference in general. Even when I'm not in a particular hurry, I dislike the thought of not being efficient in getting where I want to go.

Speaking only for myself, I'd never spend crowns on riding lessons even in hindsight after getting 18 characters to max training. It wasn't worth it to me personally to spend premium currency on an obvious timegate meant to incentivize exactly that. (My characters were maxed before crown gifting was a thing.) That said, there are definitely people who feel it is worth it, and ZOS does make money on crown riding lessons, which is why it's extremely unlikely the gate will be removed entirely.

For stamina, that can be very important when you're riding very long distances (as in Cyrodiil) and especially when you're getting attacked (whether in PvE or PvP). Each hit from an enemy drains a decent amount of stamina from the mount, which will despawn if it takes a hit that brings it below zero stam. You then have to survive and make it out of combat before you can mount again, which can be very annoying and cost a lot of time. I did tend to save stamina for last on most of my characters, though.

I love how people are trying to give legitimate answers. :D I think the original post was rhetorical and facetious. Or at least, that’s how I took it.

ZOS really should lessen the time it takes to fully train your mount. That would be a nice QoL change.

22,500 gold is nothing, personally i wouldn’t mind them raising the cost if they remove the cooldown. You also get an additional 30% speed from a passive in the pvp skill tree. The biggest difference between wow and eso though is that you can teleport easily in eso. In wow, having a mount made a much bigger impact on your experience than eso will ever be able to with teleportation.

I mean WAY in the beginning of the game, fully maxing out all 3 horse riding skills gave your mount a fancy horse blanket. But then that was removed after the mount skills became character wide across all mounts. Honestly, doing all 3 is useful on its own. 60 increase to carrying capacity, moving around the map 10X faster, not having to slow down hardly to get your Stam back up and making it harder to get shot off your mount is all good enough reasons for me to get my mount skills all the way up lol

I think you can get the riding skill increase books in stacks of 10 in the crown store. They'll also go on sale sometimes I do believe. Also they drop like crazy from crown crates. I have horrible luck with crown crates, so I get a lot of the useless drops. When I spend 50$ on crown crates I usually get a small pile of them. They're also cheap with seals of endeavors. So there's lots of ways to get you riding skills up fast if you don't feel like waiting lol

It was redesigned. It was once much worse.

Originally the horses [and horses were the only mount available] were different. You had a fast horse, a stamina horse, an inventory horse, and if you wanted the max speed, max stamina, max inventory spaces you had to feed your horse every day to get that one stat to 60, and Divines help you if you forgot and fed the wrong food because there was no take-back or do-over. I think it was apples for speed, hay for stamina, and oats for inventory, but I could easily be wrong. Its been a long time. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Mounts go down the page to "Deprecated mounts"

The Light Horse 10% bonus to speed, available at the Stablemaster for 42,700 Gold, Gaited Horse 10 point bonus to stamina, available at the Stablemaster for 42,700 Gold., and the Draft Horse 10 point bonus to carrying capacity, available at the Stablemaster for 42,700 Gold. They started with the bonus, and improved as you fed them.

Oh don't kid yourself. People spend money on it. I would be lying if I said I had never crown leveled a horse or two. Never all the way, but a new toon with no mount speed is painful. I also wouldn't step into cyro without close to max stamina.

If it makes you feel better, it used to be a lot worse. I was feeding 15 horses a day at one point, and that was back when I only had 5 toons.

The system as is amounts to a cash grab, nothing more. I dont see it changing.

What exactly is that super thing you get after fully leveling your mount skills?

The ability to complain about how long it took.

(I've never gotten that unlock - I don't bother with Stamina upgrades. Did it on 8 characters, it wasn't a problem.

And "omg, what's the deal with this?"

The deal is the exact same one that's been behind every "long project" thing in MMOs - from reputation grinds, to dailies, to login rewards, to rare drop rates, etc. Time sinks. The longer you have to play, the longer they have you as a customer.

And they existed long before f2p, cash shops, and being able to "pay for convenience" to finish it sooner, so it's not a product of Those Evil Cash Shops.

Honestly, I didn't notice. Perhaps it's just because I've been playing MMOs for awhile, and am used to the "you go slow at the beginning" thing. Or used to the idea of long-time grinds.
(I also never bothered with Rapid Maneuvers, it never seemed worth it for just some speed boost. Meanwhile, other people ranted up and down - when they made the rank changes - about how it's utterly required for every character for the game to be playable at all. /shrug)

edit: I've always been stunned by the idea that people actually pay for those Mount Training books. They seem like the biggest waste of $ in the entire cash shop to me.

Being able to port easier in ESO makes leveling riding skills, the way it is, even more ridiculous. You could port in WoW too, if you play a mage. Mage portals made nice business too, btw.

Compared to WoW's 20 gold (before reduction) for 60% speed, it is a lot. ;)

Hah. I remember playing vanilla WoW back in the day. 20 gold by level 40 was like, a huge amount. And the 1000 gold by level 60 for the fast mount was totally crazy. :D

Oh yeah. The skills drained your wallet(*), if you just grabbed money from questing and selling loot. Blizzard changed it, though. It's 4g and 50g now. And then they ruined it by adding riding skills (flying mounts) for new worlds. Still, it is only a 1 time pay per skill level and a 5 times return to the Flight Master (instead of 90 times for both in eso)

(*) I can still feel that pain....

Still, it was memorable. I remember how great it was to get my first mount in wow. Eso was way worst at first when you had to level mounts individually then got better with the current system.

Eso mounting skill is a chore, wow mounts were an achievement.

Those things used to be tied TO THE INDIVIDUAL MOUNT.

Think about that, you buy a new horse, it's effectively useless for 60+ days.
But yes people in fact do spend money on it because they're impatient.
Worse you was limited to 50 upgrades to an mount. You could by 20K gold mounts with an +10 in any attribute.
And it was an pain in Cyrodil and you was on your PvE mount. You had to return to base bank stuff and change to the faster PvP mount.

You want speed, in Cyrodil this is important but in <50 campaigns few has maxed it :)
Overland its nice but an luxury. Stamina, I put in 5 then speed is 25 then 5 more then maxed, just to not have random mob dismout you questing and exploring. Inventory, if you are an new player this is imortant, for alts with maxed out bank and just maxing out bag space as sure I know I like the character its not important.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.
