Turning down ability visual effects

Hello! So I have seen this mentioned by people a few times. But I personally know someone who has difficulty with the ability effects. My mother is pretty old, and loves playing eso. She has a hard time though with certain aspects of the game, because the flashing lights and high visual effects of abilities make it hard for her to see and play. Especially in groups. My question is, would you like to be able to turn down the visual effects of abilities, into something less flashy and more simple so it's easier on the eyes?

No, there is no need to create a toggle for it.

No need to elaborate here, the visual clutter in dungeons and trials makes tanking even more tedious and sometimes deadly (when you're not sure block has registered or not because you can't see your character in the Broadway laser, fireworks, explosion light show).

Personally am ok with the effects but I can see how they are a problem for others. Having an option to turn them off would surely help lots of people.

There is an option in settings for "Show additional ally effects." It won't turn down everything, but it might help.

Looking online, some people will reduce their screen brightness or the in-game gamma settings when they do group content to cut down on the brightness.

It would be nice to have more control, of course. I imagine most tanks would disable those Daedroths right away.

    T H I S!!
Just let us see abilities that directly affect us (i.e. a player casting a spell against you).
I don't need to see the clutter that's going on in a nearby keep, I don't want to see all the flashing lights while I'm trying to park the boss in a specific area not knowing that the red circle is there covered by lots of DoT's on the floor.
Performance would be better too, less effects to process, and more importantly, accessibility.

Yes, I would like the option. On PC there's an addon to hide group that helps with fights were a lot of things are going on, but even for solo or overland, it'd be nice to limit the visuals from skills, for eg., it always hurts my eyes if someone streaks next to my character, and a lot players seem to do this near writs, or the flashing from entering/exiting the scrying tool, so being able to tone these visuals down would be neat.

It's not an addon thing, if that's what you mean.

The option for Show Additional Ally Effects was added to the base game with Clockwork City, so I assume it's also available on consoles. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

As for reducing brightness being less than ideal, I agree. But there's something to be said for knowing a less than ideal solution that might help now as opposed to having no solutions while waiting for ZOS to maybe, possibly, change the status quo.

And while we are at it - as well turn off most of the effects of apex mounts - sound and particles - and stop the glow of stuff, that is all overdone and kills the original character ESO once had - an option to switch the rendering of these things off - which wouldn't have any effect on how others see it - would be welcome.

I agree with this, I'd love a toggle for it. One day when I was riding my glowing Sovngarde horse, the glowing particle effect didn't load in, leaving me with a nice looking cream colored mount with a nicely detailed saddle... ever since I saw it in its full glory without the glow, I've wanted to turn that glow off. So many mounts look so much better without the flashy effects.

I’d rather see less visuals from bosses. Lord Farquad execute, lokke ice/lightning, etc (looks cool but I lag).

It would be nice to hide pets though. I’m sure there’s an addon for it but I have enough already 😮‍💨

I also turn my friendly aoes to black and turn brightness down, they’re nearly invisible this way. Some may find helpful

    This too!
The only other MMO I ever played aside from ESO (the FIRST MMO I actually ever played) was Perfect World, and in our crappy computer, we had a toggle to make player characters (except for my own) generic. They'd all have basic horses and a gray robe outfit with hidden customization.

@VaranisArano it seems that the additional ally effects are a PC thing only and are not available on consoles, I just verified going through every option available.

Huh, that's bizarre. Sorry, I'd tried to check and only just now found Gina Bruno advising someone to use the option, only to be told thanks, but that option doesn't exist on Xbox.

I would love to be able to tone down or turn off all the extra effects. I do have issues with photosensitivity causing seizures and migraines, and having an option to tone those down would be awesome. I know when I mentioned on the forums that deadlands was causing issues the dev's did tone the area down which helped. Hopefully the dev's will see this and help with some of the other effects causing others issues as well.

I think it's for the same reason usually pc games have graphic settings but consoles don't, and that option is probably in that category. Considering that the xbox series has a graphics option of fidelity/performance, now I'm even more curious why can't we get individual settings like in PC.

Enemies are far harder to see in raids than they were a few years ago because of this. I'd like them to renew and highlight enemies more than anything else as the tab target feature in ESO is still clunky and hard to select your target properly.

I'd like this as well. It's not usually a serious problem for me but it would still be nice to be able to turn down some of the flashier effects.

I've noticed during some of the events that while waiting for bosses to spawn players will keep spamming AoE skills. I suppose they're trying to make sure they tag the boss the instant it spawns, but some of them also seem to be competing to stack as many flashy effects on top of each other as possible and when you're waiting for the boss it can get annoying.

If I could set it so that on my screen the effects aren't so bright it would let them do whatever without annoying me.

With graphics settings I think it is because there's a much greater range of hardware on PCs, and therefore more variety in what each machine can handle and it's probably easier to give the users a bunch of settings and let them work it out than try to do presets like they do on console.

But there's other settings the PC version has which the consoles versions don't that I really don't understand. For example on PC I can set up different tabs in the chat box with different channels enabled, so if I'm doing group content and don't want to be distracted I can switch to my 'group' tab (which just has say, yell, tell and party) or if I catch a comment in guild chat and want to know what's going on but it's mixed in with a bunch of stuff from zone chat I can switch to a channel with just that guild, then switch back with 1 click. Whereas on console apparently it's all or nothing.

I don't understand why having already gone to the trouble of creating options like that they restrict it to 1/3 of players.

I have epilepsy and strobing lights generally don't evoke seizures for me, but I try to avoid them just to be safe.

Sometimes I have to leave during dolmen fights or world boss fights if there are too many people, haha. I think trials are forever off the table.

It would be helpful to be able to turn down at least the flashiest effects so I'll throw my vote in.

I didn't know about this and I'm not clear on what "additional" effects are, but I'm going to try it, thank you.

Edit: While we're on the topic... the strobing light effect the Golden Vendor gives off is kinda awful. I can just block it with my hand so it's not a huge deal but I hope they don't add more effects like this.

I have migraines. Some last for the most part of a week. Bright lights and/or flashes don't (normally) trigger them, but can exacerbate one that is "under control".

Last week was one of those where I had headaches most of the days. By Saturday it was (or so I thought) finally over, so I joined my guildies to run through AS, CR and HoF. At the end of HoF the headache was back and it made me so confused I was linking wrong stuff in chat to offer.

I've had 'show additional ally effects' turned off ever since I found out about it. I cannot make the game any darker than it is or else I won't see anything (I have myopia, presbyopia and was told that I'm in the beginning stages of cataracts (too early to do anything about it)).

For me the best solution would be an option to turn off ALL effects, not only the ones from group members. I don't usually talk about what I consider to be a "me problem" because I believe it's up to me to find ways around those, but since you brought those up, I wanted to share my experience.

It would be nice. For me it's not a matter of brightness but simple visual confusion. It's most prevalent in trials but even when there are 50 people crowded around a boss during an event, sometimes I can't even find what I want to aim at.
