Server ping website

So I'm trying to optimise my latency.

When playing it's usually around 80, so pretty decent, but I've been wondering if that's accurate - I've been unable to get high LA/sec even using a metronome - if I go slow enough for the light attacks to register then the weaving average is poor.

But anyway, I found this website where you can ping the servers
https://pingtestlive.com/eso-status

Latency on the website test is around 300 for NA and 250 for EU (from UK). However, the NA server connects immediately, like instantly. The EU server takes about 5 seconds to connect.

What does this mean? And how come the latency on the ping website is so much higher than shown in the game? Latency shown ingame is currently 79.

I ran the test on the website with nothing else running on my PC (ie ESO was not running).

The game numbers are end to end messaging of some kind. We know this because when the page is reporting 70 or so ping an actual proper network latency check on EU is about 23ms (which is about right for UK fibre to Germany).

Neither of the addresses it lists appear to match those used by the ESO game client so it's hard to guess what they are pinging. The NA one they cite actually appears to be a German IP address...

If you are in the UK and your latency is about 80 then there's probably not a lot you can optimize assuming you've already done the locally important thing and are not using wifi.

Sheesh. I would not use that website. I don't think they are pinging what they think they are pinging, especially given that the NA megaserver is not in Germany.

All that a "ping test" will do is tell you how long it takes for an internet packet to get to the target IP address and the response from the remote to get back to you. It is a measurement of the transit time for everything from your ethernet adapter (wired or wireless) in your PC through the internet and all the ISPs along the way, and back to your ethernet adapter.

The in-game latency meter is more accurate as it is measuring what the ESO client sees and is less likely to be blocked something that does not pass pings internet packets.
