The big reveal finally came and went, and now we have most of the information on the year's content. Specifically, we're getting Tales of Tribute in the new chapter. While we don't have every single detail yet, I think there is yet hope for the system to not be a complete waste. There are at least 2 reasons I would like to go through in an effort to be optimistic.
Reason #1: Transmute Crystals. This is arguably the biggest reason for the system to gain any popularity. For those unaware, Transmute Crystals are a very annoying resource to collect if you don't frequent PvP. For PvE players, you have to que for daily dungeons, and then random dungeons over, and over, and over, and.... You get the point. The recently added Set Collection, as well as Reconstruction systems have made these Transmute Crystals a rather valuable currency. For a varied sum, you can instantly have set gear from even the hardest content in the game, provided you have collected the gear at least once beforehand. Now, while there are plenty of players out there that have more Transmute Crystals than they could ever need, the way they obtained so much is strictly by relying on others. One of the best things about ESO is that you can generally play the game at your own pace, without any real restrictions. While I certainly think certain hard caps should remain, I don't believe obtaining Transmute Crystals should be one of them. This is a chance for players to earn as many Transmute Crystals they want, without having to do group or PvP content. It all comes down to how easy it is to obtain them per match, or set of matches. Hopefully Tales of Tribute will be enjoyable, and the rewards at the end of the journey will be as well. This is all to say, hopefully you can farm Transmute Crystals from battling NPCs.
Reason #2: A real activity. In the expansive world of ESO, there are unfortunately only a few activities that don't involve combat. You can go fishing, you can dig for Antiquities, and..... Well, as far as I'm aware of when I'm writing this, that's it. It's suddenly clear why Tales of Tribute was even thought of in the first place. ESO could definitely use a fresh new thing to do when you just want to relax. Based on the information we have so far, you'll be going on a small adventure, taking on multiple NPCs throughout the world. While it's not clear exactly how fun the game will be as of right now, it sounds promising enough to be another break from the combat heavy norms of the rest of ESO.
All in all, there are promising aspects in Tales of Tribute, and I'm actually pretty excited to see where this whole thing goes. It which shall not be mentioned, is hopefully a huge inspiration for Tales of Tribute. I would love to see NPCs from all over the world of ESO ready to take players on, and would especially love to see the rewards be well worth it for being good at it. Tournaments of a sort would especially be cool if you could wager things like gold, but the NPCs will put up a much harder challenge. There's a ton of potential here, and while I did rolls my eyes when I first heard the news, the more I think about it, the more I get excited for what could be. Here's hoping Tales of Tribute is a well worth addition.
When the next Elder Scroll is written, you shall be it's scribe.
