Hypothetically, if ZOS had released the card game with the Deadlands and the Armory with High Isle

I remember being surprised that the Armory was part of the Deadlands. It seemed like such a popular feature to throw away on a free DLC. Now we have this card game no one wanted as a the selling point of a chapter.

Well armory isn't really with Deadlands, it was in the free update that came along with it.

You could say the same about them releasing housing as a free update instead of making it a DLC or saving it for Morrowind - that was a pretty big feature to include for free. Although now I think about it that might be because housing is very much a gold/crown sink - you have to buy a house (beyond the free inn rooms), then buy or craft furniture to decorate it. It's probably not easy to persuade someone to pay for the opportunity to pay for stuff.

The armoury is kind of similar, but more functional if you stick with the free 'version'. To get full use from it you need to buy armoury slots, and likely also the assistant, so while it's a very useful feature for some people it probably wouldn't be well received as a paid upgrade.

Hopefully that means the card game won't just be a gold/crown sink. I know there's a deck building element to it but I hope the 'starter' decks will be good enough to stick with if you're not getting competitive and getting additional cards won't rely too much on spending gold or crowns to buy them (or worse buy RNG packs hoping 1 good card is in there somewhere).

Armory is a quality of life feature. Quality of life features should never be part of paid content. Bad enough that ESOs barber is basically a feature you have to pay for.
