It's worth noting that quoting is not the same as a reply; it will not notify someone when they get quoted. If you're hoping for a response in return, you have to @ them. i.e. @Ksariyu

Stars are determined by how many points you have, which are the total number of Insightfuls, Agrees and Awesomes you've received. They don't mean you are knowledgeable about the workings of the forums.

This. To add to that...the more you post the more you rack them up, so if you have a conversational style of posting it's easy to get a lot of stars because you'll get agrees on some of them. It just means you talked a lot though not necessarily that you learned more than the basics.
