Lock picks in guild trader

I was browsing a guild store recently and noticed lockpicks selling for 40 or 50 gold each. What!? You can buy as many as you like for 9 gold in any NPC general merchant. I was shocked and went to several traders. I did see one seller with a stack for 5g each. Bought that one. What the heck.

People that farm for a lot of plans in containers get a bunch of lockpicks. See why someone is selling the for 5g a piece. At 40-50 each, well a fool and his money is easily separated.

    Stay safe :)

There's a few examples of this kind of thing. Basic style material being one.

Lockpicks are free in the game; all you have to do is loot containers and soon you'll be swimming in lockpicks. If you paid 5g apiece for a stack of them, you paid too much. :)

    Exactly!

Go to any Dwemer ruin and you'll literally be showered in them!

I could never break these things as fast as they're replenished to not have ridiculous stacks of them.

    5g per is still a huge rip-off!

Dreloth Ancestral Tomb in Vvardenfell is a great place if you lack lockpicks or Alchemy solvents.
81 lootable containers (even without the quest unlocking a bit more).
With that consideration even the 1 gold a piece of a lockpick is a robbery B)

If you are on PS EU you can send me any spares if you like. I can get through a stack a day (I force lock) no problem if I am chest farming for jewellery or paintings etc (PSN is Fizl)

It's easy to forget or be unaware of what can be bought from NPC vendors in this game and at what prices. So many things sold by NPC vendors are either irrelevant or overpriced compared to what can be farmed or bought from guild traders, most people probably don't even consider looking at NPCs to see if they sell what they're looking for. (And that's assuming you can even guess which type of vendor sells the thing you want.) I imagine that's the case with people who need lockpicks and are just like "aight, time to hit this guild trader over here and get what I want."

I have seen in other games player purchasing items from NPCs and selling them for a large markup trying to take advantage of new players who do not know better. It is sad that there are players behaving in such a poor manner but there are jerks in the real world so we should expect some of them in-game.

I farm chests in two locations. I force way more locks than lockpicks drop. I buy stacks 2 or 3 times week. If you have excess lockpicks then you don’t find many chests.

PC/NA had pretty high prices coinciding with the New Life Festival with that lockpicking quest in Rawlkha.

Yep. You see this from time to time with any useful item sold at a vendor. Some players don't know any better, and some people take advantage of it.

I find a lot of chests. However, I mostly went back to actually picking the locks once I realized that (1) forcing the lock always breaks a pick and (2) you don't get any XP for forcing the lock. I do force the locks on occasion, but generally speaking it's only if I'm in a big hurry. Back when I first bought the passive and all of its upgrades that increases your chances of forcing locks I was forcing locks constantly and did indeed suddenly find myself out of lockpicks a time or two. But now that forcing locks is something I try to avoid as a general rule, I never find myself suddenly out of lockpicks.

If you're on PC/Mac, I'll gladly send you a free stack of lockpicks every so often, because I always end up accumulating more stacks than I need and I hate destroying things.

this is the largest use of my lockpicks is forcing them

forcing costs 1 pick regardless if success or fail (actually multiple on fails for the same chest, by which i mean, you fail you lose a pick, you fail again you lose another pick, and then finally opening it is yet another pick)
    no xp

i only force pick on my main because im lazy after spending many many many hours picking safeboxes either for theivery or lead farming lol

(my worse record so far is failing simple lock force (85% chance) 12x in a row, though that only happened once, using 13 lockpicks on 1 simple chest was very annoying and why i dont force locks on my other toons lol)

    So...

    1. If the price is too high, DONT BUY!
    2. Maybe others are in a different situation than you.
    3. Live and let live. If you dont agree with it, dont do it.

Charging gold for an item that can be bought from NPC's = outrage
Charging crowns for a service that can be bought from NPC's = QoL feature

I've sold lockpicks through the guild trader before and it never occurred to me to check if they're available from NPC merchants first or to wonder if the buyer 'should' be buying them from me. ATT and TTC showed me they sell (and recommended prices) and that's good enough for me.

I've sold many things I don't understand why anyone would buy, but the way I see it that's not for me to decide. Absolutely no one is under any obligation to buy something just because I'm selling it. Whether they want it, why and whether it's a reasonable price is for them to decide. I couldn't do it for them even if I wanted to because I don't know what factors go into their decision. (And if I based it on what I'd do I'd never sell anything, because if I'm selling it that means I don't want it.)

I want to know that someone might want what I'm selling of course, because otherwise I'm wasting my time and trader slots listing it, but that's what the addons are for (especially ATT which records sales rather than listings, meaning the items/prices it gives are what buyers want).

Also, if you need lockpicks in a pinch, ask in chat. Many people have stacks and stacks, and would willingly hand over 100 of them for nothing.

But to the OP's point: people price things differently. That's the perk and the bane of any player trading system. As has been mentioned, if you know it is outrageously priced, walk away.

Oops! I screwed that up. I meant to say that this is a good idea because some of us have tons of lockpicks. I don't like the guild trader system so I don't use it and just bank or destroy things. I actually destroyed about 1000 lockpicks a few days ago because they were just taking up bank space.
