Since I also started out on Steam and eventually moved to the normal installer, I can confirm that this is possible. Unfortunately you need to buy the game again, but the cheapest base game edition is enough for that.

I can also confirm that it is impossible to download the standalone installer from your ESO account page as long as you still have the Steam edition. I had to ask support for a link to the installer, which I was then given and could test the game on my laptop. The Steam version only disappeared from my ESO account page when ESO+ (which I had bought throughg Steam) ran out.

This was two or three years ago, but I would expect things to be more or less the same today.

I learned a long time ago not to go through Steam for an MMORPG style game, it's always some BS going on.

Yeah, too bad, it was so cheap just a few days ago during ZOS's sale - just a handful of dollars.

I imagine you can use the same ESO login. Not sure the platform matters.

Steam is not a platform. PC is the platform so the game is on the same platform and server as the PC players.

I used to have steam for one of my accounts and disconnected it from steam because of the problems I had with steam.

I bought my first copy of the game as a physical disk, and loaded it on my computer.

I bought my second account through STEAM - not sure why. Turns out when I log in through STEAM I can only access that account. Thought that was a pain.

So now i log in through my pc; use whichever account I want and play. My "main account" has (so far) all of the DLC and ESO+ and my second account has a few DLC's and currently is not subscribed.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Update, my old steam account is now completely gone, i bought eso again and installed it, my characters, crowns, progress are still there! SO yes, many of you in comments were right :)

IF you buy ESO from Steam, then lose your steam account, YOU WILL NOT lose your ESO characters and data.

However, there is one downside, which is that i still cannot link new steam account to the eso account as it gives me error. I would appreciate if Zenimax looked into this. Thanks all

That's great! I'd - not worry about linking to steam, personally. But you do you of course!

I'm surprised by this thread, like by others on same issue. I play ESO via Steam since over a year by now and never ever had the slightest problems. It works trouble free in all aspects. I would therefore really like to know: what are the problems that can happen when running ESO via Steam?

Am curious of this too, I've been playing since before Vvardenfell/Morrowind/Warden/Battlegrounds was a thing and I still never had any trouble playing through steam
    Hoping for more playable races
