PC Players: Minion has a client update.

Some players I know leave their computers on 24/7 and don't frequently restart Minion, but just leave it running.

I am one of those players and I restart Minion maybe once every week or two on average.
So when I restarted Minion today I noticed they have a client update for the first time in years.

I haven't installed the client yet after a fresh reboot, so I don't know how it's 'better', or even if it is better, but I just thought I'd put the information out there for the brave souls who might not know yet and want to take the plunge.

The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

I've tried the update a few times now. Minion restarts and the notice to update is still there. Restarting the computer didn't help. Minion still seems to work though if I just say I'll do it later.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

The patch notes recognize that it keeps giving the update notice, and claims that it's one of the things they expect to fix soon.

Maybe something they should have addressed before they did a patch, so they wouldn't need a patch to patch asking to install a patch.

They stated they felt it was important enough to release as it is and will fix that bug later.

Yeah. And since they didn't say WHY it was important.... y'know I like to know why things like this happen. Was it a security issue? If so, what was going on?

I'm still using an old version of minion and it appears to be working fine, well as fine as it ever has before. Did they mention what the fixes are so I can compare the new fixes with the new bugs and figure out if it's worth updating?

I have never gotten minion to work since the last version. The old one worked fine, but the new one, after installing, just leaves me with a blank, white window. I've had to install addons manually for a long time.

Anyone got a link to the old one?

This is a huge bug fix. Enterprises across the world are scrambling to remedy the damage that the log4j lib will/has caused. Unless you're OK with your computer being used maliciously without knowing it you will want to update everything that lib4j is a part of. Its a ton of applications, including.... Minecraft...

Oh, nice. I don't have minecraft installed. Lucky me. Not a game I'm interested in.... So is this a java thing?

Eh, duh - missed the post just above, sorry.

The log4shell issue is pretty bad (i've been patching all the day in the last two days to resolve it on a certain number of web applications)... anyway it's highly unlikely, if not just impossible, you can get targeted by an attack on your Minion as it's not (or should not be) also a server listening for connections from remote hosts.

    Better safe than sorry, anyway...
@Wolfchild07 DO NOT try to install older versions, as they come with the bug... better not to use Minion at all if newer does not work.

All major software impacted have already been patched, comprising Minecraft afaik. The real issue is with the huge number of little unpatched servers around the internet.

This article, if you want to read more about the issue, is pretty well written and readable even from a beginner developer: https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2021/12/13/log4shell-explained-how-it-works-why-you-need-to-know-and-how-to-fix-it/

I had to reinstall MacOS and was forced to install Monterey. Downloaded Minion yesterday and it cannöt start properly, just crashes all the time. I guess I'll wait and hope that a new, working version is released.

The minion update is specifically for the log4shell bug (and added a smaller bug resolution as a bonus): https://minion.mmoui.com/?log

Does not look like they have patched the "you need to patch" bug, though.

I repatched this morning, just restarted minion and didn't get the prompt to patch this time, so working fine for me.

After seeing this thread last night, I brought up Minion. It prompted me to patch so I did so. Then restarted puter and brought Minion up again. All seems fine with no additional prompt for patch.
