why is ESO the best MMO?

Little history, I started playing WoW way back when (05). I was in the military and deployed to Iraq. I was a truck driver and in between convoys my buddy and I would head over to the internet cafe and play WoW. So holds a special place in my heart. After the military, I would drift away and back to WoW. I have played most of the other major MMO games but always found myself coming back. However, I believe I have finally broken that chain and in its place is ESO.

For me the reason that it is the best MMO out there has 1st start with the fact that it is the Tamriel world. Also, and this one is major is the world building. I have never felt so immersed in an MMORPG's world like I do in ESO. And 3rd has to be the community. It is one of the best out there in gaming. Those are my major reasons why this game is at the top. What is yours?

Probably because of it's variety of play. This game has a lot of stuff to do.

I've played Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and ESO, and the Elder Scrolls universe is great. I've played ESO since beta; although every once in a while I leave for a couple months then come back. So much to do in ESO, that each day I pick something different and just sit back and enjoy playing; even the days where I don't accomplish much other than picking a zone and direction and just running around and explore.

I've played UO, WOW, EQ, EQ2, Rift, SWG, PoE, Diablo (1/2/3), AO, CoH/V, FFXIV, SWTOR, LOTRO, DDO, NW, NWN, NWN2, BG1, BG2, CO, Vanguard, DCO, and many others that I can't recall at the moment.

Star Wars Galaxies (pre NGE), City of Heroes/Villians, and ESO have been the most enjoyable for me.

For me it starts with the combat, needing to pay attention to mechanics and react as well as maintain targeting.
Because the combat is reactive, skill matters. Put a bad player in end game gear and they will be utter trash, put a good player in basic crafted gear and they will still perform very well.

This make me feel like the time and effort spent actually playing the game pays off as opposed to just getting the latest gear and levelling up.

Eso is heavily single player focused. So maybe thats why?
Combat is also simple...at least until you discover vet dlc dung with insta kills all over the place.
Personaly eso is like a mix of single player and mmo but i wouldnt say it's the best
I am @fluffypallascat pc eu if someone wants to play together

ESO and Elder Scrolls lore in general seems like it relates to people and the real world without being too out there, unlike some games which are so fantasy-based people don't know how to relate to them.

I find the combat in ESO to be a refreshing change from what I have seen in the other MMORPGs. I like how we have very few restrictions with our builds, outside of math, and combat seems more engaging and more active. I also think the storytelling is fabulous. Oh, I almost forget I like the better graphics compared to the games the other major MMORPG titles out there.

Honestly, this is sort of a disingenuous thread. It's all personal. Each of us has some reason or reasons why we're playing ESO instead of some other MMO.

But the real bottom line is that everyone's response is personal - so there's not likely to be much (if any) of a consensus.

That's why it's a good question. We're all here playing ESO so it's reasonable to assume this is our favourite MMO, otherwise I'd be on the GW2 forum or something right?

It can be refreshing to see what facets of such a large game are what keep people engaged.

The combat system is what carries this game. Barely any cast times on abilities and no cooldowns on abilities. It used to be better but it could be way worse. I just wish Zenimax realise that this is what separates it from other games and remove cast times from ults and stop putting cast times on abilities. Fast paced combat is always appreciated and waiting for abilities to fire off cause of cast times is annoying as well as having cooldowns.

*shrug* I'm not much into the whole MMO thing really. I'm here to fill in the time until either: A - I die; or B - TES VI releases. I'm not at all interested in whatever that space opera thing ZOS is doing releases as I have little interest in that genre. I love ESO because it's set in a time period in the TES universe where it can do it's own thing, but not totally screw up the single player games.

I've got 10k hours in Skyrim, ditto Oblivion. I do love ESO, but an MMO is not something I'll live in forever. The biggest attraction for me is it's not a static world like the SPMR games - which one has to mod with player created content in order to keep playing them....

As far as story and atmosphere goes, nothing has beaten The Secret World for me. You can also mix n match skills for a variety of builds. Unfortunately, they butchered that game when they moved to all platforms and added levels. You used to just grow in power by acquiring new passive and active skills, and gear.

ESO is great for mixing and matching sets, or going afk and waiting for trash mobs to die, with the right build. It's good for experimentation and fun builds. The story itself doesn't grab me. It may be the writing or direction, but something is definitely missing.

Personally, I prefer GW2 by far.

ESO is for me a nice side game. I enjoy it but I could never say that it's best MMO, due to several issues that are weaknesses to my eyes and will always prevent me from doing more out of the game.

Note that I don't say that GW2 is best MMO and I don't think we can say that for any game, because it remains a matter of preferences.

    False.

ESO is a game that I play. I play it enough that I'm invested in the future of this game, hence I am on the forums to discuss it, and debate opinions for the current state of the game and the future of it. That doesn't make it my favorite MMO.

It's not my favorite MMO of all time, nor is it even my favorite MMO that I am currently playing.

My favorite MMO of all time is Star Wars Galaxies.

My favorite MMO that I am currently playing is EverQuest.

Both SWG and EQ are ranked above ESO, both in all time and current.

I like ESO more than WoW, but I generally dislike WoW anyways. I haven't played FF to compare it to that. I like ESO more than New World, but I do enjoy NW. So I guess I like ESO better than the rest of the trinity of current top MMO's, but it's not much competition.

All time, it's behind at least SWG and EQ, which are my top MMO's of all time, and some of my top games of all time.

ESO is possibly even behind games like City Of Heroes and Warhammer Online of other MMO's I've greatly enjoyed. May be ranked higher than them. They are all kind of around the same level.

ESO is way too formulaic and missing of any definitive Elder Scrolls gameplay traits for me to rank it as an all time game. It has a lot of content, which keeps me invested because there is a plethora of stuff I can do on any given log-in. But it's all formulaic, been done before, and the overall design of it is pretty shallow for it to stand out as anything special.

So yes, one can be playing it, and even active in its community, and not have it be a favorite game.

Well...ESO isn't the best MMO. It's a very good MMO but it isn't the best. FFXIV is but it just isn't my thing. I really don't like Asian games. I mean they are truly gorgeous but meh. ESO is my type of game. For all it's flaws and it does have flaws, I appreciate it for what it is.

Note: (ZOS, please fix vampires, you really screwed them up. I honestly wish you'd realize that this is a PvE game lol. Ok, so it's an MMO but most of us are PvE players).

I'm not crazy about that game either. It looks good, but the combat is very shallow with most of the game's challenge revolving around dodging squares on the ground or following patterns during boss fights. I've never seen a game that relies so heavily on those kind of mechanics. It's almost like the game's combat takes a back seat to the real game, which plays more like a game of twister than fantasy warfare.

Eso would be perfect for me if they did 3 things

    1. Flying Mount
    2. Better matchmaking - like Dcuo has to que into their alerts/raids. I know so many that don’t even know how to get in a trial. Shouldn’t be this hard. Let people que like they do regular 4 mans. What a waste.
    3. Tanking group pull

Like the game, dislike the cash shop. Not enough stuff to be earned in game. If anything causes me to stop playing it's going to be that. And poor storytelling.

Loved FF14, but when I found out it's MSQ was locked behind unskippable dungeons I had to stop.

My favourite of all time has to be The Secret World, because I really miss those kitties. Superb atmosphere, great storytelling. SWL was a thing that happened. I enjoyed LOTRO and Warhammer back in the day as well.

SWTOR - journey was great, went downhill with Makeb and I just could not be bothered with the Fallen Empire stuff.

Am I just killing time until we get the Runeterra MMO? Possibly, never played LoL but I'm absolutely in love with the lore. It's also dependent on the direction ESO takes. We are already seeing a fall in the amount of endavours earned per week and the predatory stuff on the cash shop is purely there to get people who don't know (ie new people), respec scrolls, vampirism/werewolf cures? Come on.

So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

It was, now i do not think it is.
It has a lot of alternates to anything you do not like.

With out it, it is a lot of games with better gameplay.

Good think is that quests and old content is accesable on any level.

Best game - is the game where you can do what you like as you like, have alternate of getting something by thingth you like to do, not by doing thingth you dislike a lot of times - as example dayly quests that give stats - like another games.

You dislike it but you need stats to do thingth you like.

By summ of such thingth you like and dislike in game it is best or not for you.

Teso was good because a lot of thingth are not nessesary to do, as example i do not like quests.

Its combat was very good to. Had a lot of options. But with updates less and less options you have.

And in game i like combat more than quests and etc aspect.

Teso is very good looking game + to all this. A lot of actions, fashions and etc..

But i like more naked costumes like in corean game so only skinns, make up for character, mounts and nature is more interesting for me.

I think its strengths are more numerous than other MMO's strengths, basically.

    Pros
    • The content release schedule, never more than 3 months from a new drop, and an expansion every summer
    • The level cap never raising, so your gear is always relevant, new gear has to be genuinely interesting mechanically to motivate players to earn it (not just "it's X stat points better than you current gear"), and new story content focuses on quality since it doesn't need any padding to arbitrarily drag out the levelling process
    • Combat being fast paced and reactive (at least where PVE bosses are concerned) - a ground based signal from a boss means GET THE HELL OUT RIGHT NOW in ESO. Whereas in FFXIV it means you can start to consider leisurely walking outside of that zone at some point in the next 5 seconds.
    • Exploration is easily best in class, whether that's exploring the landscapes and finding chests and crafting mats and collectibles, or visiting ruins and caves and villages for self contained story arcs.
    • Voice acting for every single line of dialogue in the game, and with an exceptionally high bar of quality. No other MMO comes even close to touching ESO here.

    Cons
    • The content release schedule, while mostly a positive (see above) also means expansions are much lighter on content than competing MMOs, despite costing roughly the same amount as the competition.
    • Animations are legit awful compared to the better competition (FFXIV, GW2, WoW). Even basic traversal (running, sprinting) lacks weight, has rigid motion, and the jumping is... GAH. Combat animations are even worse, and that's before getting into the visual issues of LA weaving and block cancelling. Great paced combat, great combat mechanics, but the animation system lets it down. GW2 probably has the best MMO combat. While FFXIV's has great animations but is so damn slow and simple, like baby's first MMO.
    • Visually, pretty sub par due to the short draw distance and absence of a proper LOD system. No matter the weather there's always a wall of fog in ESO. Means proper TES-style vista moments are impossible. Scale a mountain (that you're allowed to scale...) and you can't really see jack.
