Downloading new version of game question

I currently have eso on disc but would like to buy a digital version as I'm having issues with console not always loading discs, which is a problem when you have Live Gold.

My question is, if I buy digital version (probably the Blackwood edition that includes all previous chapters), do I first need to uninstall disc version then re-download digital version? Also is it safe to do this without losing all my characters and progress?

You probably don't need to uninstall it but I am not really sure about this part. You will not lose any characters or progress when changing from disc to digital. You just have to log in with your acoount name and password and you're ready to go. All your progress is saved on ZOS site. Only your Game settings are on your site.
