Why do I need do I need to play all classes and know all playstyles to be able to compete ?

As a stam sorc main... I rarely use all classes, this game is a disgrace now in my opinion. Punishing diversity and creativity while marketing other classes to be overpowered to sell RP.

But doesn't bother me pretty much, just came on here to rant after a BG's match of stupidity and people having 18 classes thinking this is an esport. Oh well - the esport failures have taken over PvP and the game is almost full RP now... 😂 Good luck in 2022

Sorcerer class is very strong in PvP, maybe stam sorc isn’t BiS in BGs, but that changes over time and according to one post I read in the PvP forum, stam sorc is BiS in IC or at least the sewers. I love my mag sorc in Cyrodiil. I’m rather confused as to what your complaint is tbh. Sure, some builds of warden and necro are strong, but not all, and I don’t think mag warden has been that great in PvP for a while and now Dragonknights are popular. In any MMO the meta changes over time, no? You can chase it or you can play what you like to the best of your abilities. Just my two cents. :)

How do you know they have 18 different characters or that they think this is an esport? I would expect to find some players to be rather competitive but that is the nature of PvP.

You can main one type of character in PVP if you want. *Waves from a MagDK Main* I've got a Stam Warden I also PVP with, but that's got much less playtime and I always go back to MagDK.

And you do need to know all the playstyles...at least enough to kill enemies playing them. I've never played a Stamblade or StamCro. I've learned how to fight them through the trial and error of fighting, dying to, and killing them.

I think you correctly identified the problem. Just not in the way you think. This a Learn 2 Play problem.

You say you don't know all the classes and playstyles well enough to counter and kill them. Well, how do you expect to learn?

If you don't want to play them - and you don't have to, though in some cases it makes it easier - then you need to learn to play your Stam Sorc. I don't mean that in an insulting way. I mean it in the same trial and error, fighting, dying, and killing way that I learned to fight classes I'd never played on my MagDK.

If you don't learn to play, then switching classes isn't going to help. *Waves on my Stam Warden* swapping to the "OP" Stam Warden did not magically make me a better PVPer. At first, I was worse because of the learning curve for a new class. And if I didn't have the player knowledge to counter a particular playstyle, then Stam Warden didn't do me a lick of good. It took practice fighting dying, and killing to get moderately good at Stam Warden. Keep that in mind when you face good players on multiple classes - the class skills might be killing you, but it's the practiced player behind it that's making the real difference.

Now, I'm sorry to say that while I love Stam Sorcs, none of mine have PVPed beyond getting Caltrops. So I can't offer you much specific Stam Sorc advice because I haven't put in the L2Play time on that class in PVP.

Perhaps if you explain some of your specific problems, other Stam Sorc PVPers will be able help out?

"Why do I need to know how my opponent fights in the boxing ring? I just want to be able to punch them in the face for free! That's more fair than them having an advantage because of the extra hours in the boxing gym that they put in!"

Does sound pretty ridiculous doesn't it? Why would it be different for any other form of pvp? See how ridiculous you sound?

I'm not sure where you've been the last year, but people have been very clear that they like to have options. Plus playing the same character over and over again can start feeling repetitive and stagnant. Sometimes it's nice to switch to something else for a bit to get a different play style. And as people have mentioned before, the meta switches so much that one day it's the necro apocalypse, to 2 hit nb gangkers, to nothing but streaking sorcs everywhere, etc. So people end up creating toons of various classes to stay on trend and to compete. I remember not too long ago that stamsorc was the meta and was very strong in PVP. It still is very strong I believe.

Conversion is infinite sustain engine, in extreme builds I went with 3stat food and no stam recovery anywhere.
    Streak is streak.
    Probably the best damage passives.
    Best ultimates in the game.
Crystal weapon is delayed damage that goes off whenever you feel like it should.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

    ^ This

It certainly helps but maining a class means you know the ins and outs of it, and if you're paying attention you can learn what counters you, what counters others, and if you ask questions you'll find out how things are done. I've not played all the classes and main a magDK, but that's not stopped me over the years I've had this character from competing with the best of them.

Yeah no [snip] people are gonna play whatever is the "flavor of the month"-class/spec.
People play for "fun" and winning is "fun", so might as well play whatever makes them win most.

You don't have to but it can certainly help. It isn't even always about analyzing specifics about the classes for strategies to use against them. As others have said you'll get that just fine from playing against them. But just like in real life when struggling with a problem, sometimes the best thing you can do is take a break and focus on something else for a little while. You often come back with a fresh perspective and can have a breakthrough. Jumping on a different class from your main can have the same effect.

My main is and always has been stamblade through all it's ups and downs over the past 4 years. But I do have builds of every class, and sometimes when I fall into a string of bad luck (or being honest bad habits), I'll focus on one of my other classes for a day or two, and when I return to my stamblade I always come back feeling improved and more confident.

When I'm on these other builds I'm never thinking about how I'm going use anything I'm doing or learning against them the next time I face them. My focus is always and only ever on winning and improving on whatever character I'm on at the moment. But your habits and tendencies have a way of carrying over between classes. So when I'm starting to play too agressive and jumping into the fray too soon I can hop on my bowbowden who isn't your typical tanky stamden but instead built more like a speedy frail Nightblades who needs to maintain distance to survive. If I'm letting my buffs drop too much or forgetting that block is a thing I can hop on one of my brawler tank type builds who rely on those things to survive. If I'm focusing too much on landing my burst combos and not enough on creating pressure to create an opening for those combos I can hop on my magdk who's bread and butter is pressure. If I'm getting sloppy about balancing my mag and Stam consumption, usually from either over cloaking or over rolling, I hop on my magblade who's built very similar to my stamblade but who's mag and Stam pools are reversed, which changes my approach just enough to check myself.

PvP in this game is largely about understanding the basics and maintaining good habits. You don't need to chase the meta to be successful, in fact generally I avoid the hot new thing because I know it's likely to get nerfed. So I wait until it does and assess from there how useful it might be long term because I prefer to put together lasting builds. My stamblade (again my main) currently wears stuhn's with assassin's guile, wild hunt ring and either one piece slimeclaw or one piece krag depending on a couple variations I do. Far from meta, but I've been wearing it a while now, at least a couple patches because it's flexible and I have fun standing at the alchemy table coming up with different poison variations, and I get a lot of kills with few deaths, and really that's what it's all about, it doesn't matter how you get there.

I currently have Warden, DK, Necro singled out for pvp, Stam in all 3, though I have experimented with magcro a bit. Each of these are fun, so I focus on what I find fun and I'm quite likely off meta with builds.

I have every class myself, two for Stam and mag in most cases. However my last experience with a nb or sorc was 2017?...it's out of date, it's not likely information I could leverage on its own to base my playstyle on when facing them or even playing one.

If I went from Stamden to Magplar right now I'd only be as competitive as old muscle memory and my general style allows, and it might be pretty bad for a few warmup matches before I'm comfortable and confident with the build, etc.

I don't think I need that Magplar or my NB to understand or even be competitive on my Stamden though. I could outright be terrible at NB, and still kill them with ease on my Stamden. Each character and your understanding of them, your muscle memory and game sense should be independent, or as much as possible.

Nobody can expert level every single class in this game, but you can understand your own class to the point you can fight almost anything you come across build or class wise.
