What constitutes a group boss?

I know what doesn't: Delve Bosses, Public Dungeon Bosses (group boss or not), Deadlands Portal Bosses, Dolmen Bosses...

I have found numerous of the endeavors of late to be pretty sketchy in the description of what they ask for, any chance the tooltips on these things (or maybe even the title) could be tweaked to be a bit more succinct?

To answer the question, turns out they mean world bosses.

I think I was on my third public dungeon group event boss trying get a killing blow before it occurred to me maybe that's not what they meant.

I would say any of those apart from the first are group bosses. They are intended for a group, even if you can take them down alone.

So the bosses labeled "Group Boss" in Public Dungeons are not group bosses then? What about trials, normal or vet dungeons, since I haven't tried those yet? Are those considered "Group Bosses" as well?

Apparently.. they really need to tweak these endeavor descriptions, because to my knowledge, there is actually only one type of boss labeled group boss, and that's in public dungeons.

I believe world bosses have always been called "group bosses." I remember first seeing the term "group boss" used on UESP a few years ago to refer to what all the players kept calling a "world boss," and I'm pretty sure UESP wouldn't have just pulled the term out of the air and decided to use it in defiance of the term all the players use. I just concluded that this is another one of those instances where the playerbase uses a generic MMO term that everybody uses in ESO because it's used in other MMOs even though ESO actually calls it something else.

Public dungeons don't have "group bosses"; they have "group events" that have one or more bosses associated with them, but they are not called "group bosses." In a similar vein, the bosses in "group delves" are not called "group bosses," nor are any of the bosses in "group dungeons."

Agreed. I went to a public dungeon thinking that was it and killed the boss twice, nope. Then finished an actual dungeon to get the other endeavor. No boss credit though. Being there are so many "group" designated type of bosses in this case a simple, and arguably proper wording change to "world boss" would certainly saved a bit of time and confusion for players and clear things up. At least we know the alternative name now. :s

Then I stand corrected on the Group Boss in PD's. But since World Boss is pretty much the new norm, maybe they should use that instead of causing confusion with a term no one uses anymore? The kill X powerful/dangerous enemies is another one, but as far as I can tell, anything but an overland common mob seems to count for it, so not really an issue. Wish I could remember the other one that popped up a bit ago... but I read it and was like "What in the world are they talking about?", it was about as vague as it could possibly get.

I don't mind figuring things out generally (I actually enjoy it and avoid guides whenever possible), but the endeavors seem to be designed to be as simple and painless as possible, except some, for which the title/tooltip make little to no sense.

Except my best guess is that ESO has always called them "group bosses," which is why UESP "officially" calls them that, and it is the playerbase who insists on using an alternative name which was taken from other MMOs. I don't know that that's the case, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it is.

Public dungeon group bosses are covered in the complete a public dungeon group event Endeavor we've seen before. There's a lot of strange naming going on with Endeavors that doesn't match what players expect, from this to odd biological classification schemes. Endeavors seem to have been a system that could have benefited from greater time planning and reviewing prior to release.

Oh, just remembered another one... Harvest X Wood(or whatever). Well I harvested X wood and it didn't complete... it actually took harvesting X wood nodes to complete. Once again, not a big deal, but simply an inaccurate ask.

Had to look it up, apparently even UESP has/had qualms about calling them Group Bosses, as the game only referred to them using that phasing once, while using the term World Boss 4 times in achievements and such. Then ZOS caught wind apparently and changed all the achievements in update 30 to say Group Boss, after everyone was already calling them World Bosses.

I hear ya. The game itself should be the most reliable form of information though -- not a website imho. I have always found it strange that unofficial 3rd party resources regarding ESO have been the most reliable over the actual game which does an "OK" job of these types of details but could do better hopefully in the future, especially for new players. Over the years I have played, even the devs themselves (and on their announcement pages) have always referred to them as "world bosses". It's what I always thought they were called too, until today. A confusing technicality and possibly just a simple oversight at worst.

That one refers to any mob or boss that has at least one "shield" on their health bar-- the little thingies I used to call "wings" until I saw ZOS refer to a "shielded health bar" or "shielded life bar." So a common Troll qualifies as a dangerous foe, despite having only one tiny little shield on each side of its life bar. I know that when Endeavors first went live and people were asking about "dangerous foe," some people suggested that it was any boss who went through an impervious phase where its life bar changed from red to gold like a guard's, but that ain't it.

Using the term World Boss to mean World Boss would make more sense if that is the case as there are group bosses in the game.

I would be curious to see if today's endeavor included the IC bosses (district and/or banner), since those are "Sweeper" under the Witches' Festival, I think.

But yes, I was confused as well, since I was in a Public Dungeon and did the group event twice, then realized the endeavour hadn't completed. Then I did a world boss and got it.

Yeah, got the same issue today - only World Boss count, which is weird cause in the past World Bosses in endeavours were always called World Bosses.

Next time when this happen, i am going to trial to check if it counts too xd
