The world map of ESO

Hello everyone and good morning :)

I have played games like WoW for years, then FF14 and GW2, there were others but these 3 were the ones to capture my attention at some point.

I'm trying to dive into ESO and so far i'm liking what i'm experiencing, i was wondering for those that played other MMORPG's like WoW, GW2 etc how big is the map of ESO compared to other games of the same genre.

When i first checked the world map in ESO it can be a little deceiving because it looks small at first sight but when i clicked of the of the zones it's actually quite big or at least some zones are, and i may be wrong but it seems that some parts of the map haven't been used yet so maybe we will get some zones in there in the future?

I was also wondering, if there is a way to show NPC's like merchants and other important ones in the map?
I had some people before talking to me about addons for ESO...this was one of the things i didn't like at all in WoW, i never cared for addons in WoW but because it was required even by the guild i was in i found myself with over 20 addons when playing The Burning Crusade Classic and even when i played Vanilla Classic, the lack or even the lack of care for addons in games like FF14 and GW2 made me enjoy those games even more.
Are addons in ESO really required or can someone experience the game as it came out without addons?

Main merchants are marked on the sub maps ie. when you click a city or hub on the zone map. However they have decided not to mark every single character to avoit to clutter i presume. For that you would probably need an addon but I dont think there is one, there's just no point making one like that. If you want more detailed information about merchant in the game you can check them from various eso wiki sites.

I remember addons were pretty much required by raiding guild back in vanilla WoW some 2 decades ago. I dont do trials in ESO but I would think at least the top guilds require some.

It's your choice to use or not to use addons (at least on PC). It's also your choice to play without someone whom doesn't use them.

And I very much like to have that option.

True. WoW ( I havent played for a long time though) have very different approuch on addons than ESO. ESO's addons are more QoL type of things, in WoW you at least could have all kind of crazy automations which actually made your gameplay way more efficient - and therefore they were pretty much required.

I was a long time player of WoW, quit in the tail end of Cataclysm, then a few years ago picked up ESO on console. As many know, Console players don't have addons. If you want my experience:

I play the game just fine. It was a little annoying at first switching from PC gaming to Xbox, but all my friends were Xbox players, so I almost didn't have a choice. I don't have problem finding important vendors and NPCs; essentials, such as merchants, bank, bag upgrade, crafting areas, etc. are all marked on the map with symbols, and important quests are easily findable on the compass from any Wayshrine hub. The only ones that aren't tracked are I think the wandering merchants on main roads in zones, but they're just general merchants and not important ones. Otherwise the map will tell you.

As far as addons, there are only a few that make me green with envy of PC players and seem mandatory enough.

-Action Bar Timers, and I don't know if this is the same as this addon but there's one that even tells you when to freaking dodge or block.

-Essential Housing Tools, if you really like to decorate your house and such. It's to the point where people can code their own textures and text, add their homes to a database and even leave a guest book. Or even add their own NPCs. It's nuts.

-I think there's an addon that tracks things like crafting nodes and lore books and where to find them. I don't know the particulars from an outside perspective but it seems pretty useful.

-Dressing Room? Kind of like the recently made Armory system I think.

I don't think it gets anywhere near the crazy addon level of Warcraft though, so I think you can rest easy.

As far as map size, well I think it's big enough. It's not the BIGGEST yet, but content is rapidly growing (way faster than Warcraft would add on), and it's a younger game in comparison. But there's plenty to do, and I've been playing like four years but I'm probably only halfway through clearing content, be it dungeons, questing, and achievements. Still much I have to get back to, but I prioritize dailies and houses.

it depends on your play style.
Addons do not need to do quests.
Addons are needed when you change your build 5 times in the trial. etc
