Why are nirnhoned weapons so expensive?

Because the weapon trait nirn thingee drops only in craglorn and quite a lot less often than the armor one.

If you're on PC/NA DM me your @name and I'll send em to you free

    Wow, thank you! Done

Armor version of nirncrux drops about 5 times as often as the weapon version, it's the scarcity driving up its price. On top of that every character can obtain one random nirncruxed item for research, the quest is more likely to roll an armor piece than any weapon. 22 possible armor pieces (shields included) vs. 12 weapons. Nirncruxed items are not just rare, they don't drop at all.

Word of advice for saving money here. If you had researched at least one weapon, you can transmute that type of weapon to nirncruxed, it costs only 50 crystals but doesn't require nirncrux itself. Deconstructing it gives you a 50% chance (slightly more with added CP perk) to get tradeable nirncrux.

I believe it still costs 50 crystals AND the trait material to transmute. The trait material isn’t required to reconstruct gear (which costs fro 25 to 75 transmute crystals depending on how much of the set you’ve collected) but will only give you the crystals upon deconstruction (I don’t know if there’s additionally a chance of retrieving upgrade materials if you’ve spent them. I believe that’s at least part of the reason reconstructed gear is always marked as such, so that you know what you’ll get back upon deconstruction.

You don't need the trait mat for transmuting you just need to have it researched. That's why you get PVP players transmuting extra weapons to decon for the chance of getting the potent nirn, when they have too many transmute stones and nothing they want to use them on.

I apologize for my incorrect “correction” and have removed it to avoid confusing anyone! I would have sworn it cost a trait material but you are right, it doesn’t! :)

IMHO, it's greed. Like many things on traders.
It's a rare trait and AFAIK it's almost exclusively only able to be learned by buying gear with the trait.
Sure it can be found in the wild, but like the other poster mentioned, super super rare.
So ppl are going to craft the item with the trait and price it to make some decent gold.

I'm finishing off my main crafter and down to the last few nirnhoned traits, so I feel your pain.
What I did is just bookmarked a bunch of searches on tamrieltradecentre.com and kept watching them every couple days.

You may be able to get lucky and find nirnhoned weaps being sold for a bit cheaper but otherwise yah, your going to have to pay a bit just to buy something your going to decon for the trait learning. If you are in any guilds you may be able to ask guildies if they could craft you the nirnhoned items you need.

I got very lucky with the last 3 staves I needed for nirnhoned, found them all at a trader for 27k gold each. Normally I've seen them going for 37k and up. I'm getting soooo close to have all traits learned on everything but it's been an investment.
Luckily tho I'm patient, Perfectly content to wait for good deals to show up :)

P.S. to answer your last question. Yes, once you learn the trait you can make as many pieces of gear as you wish, as long as you have the materials to do it. For example once my crafter learns the trait I could make an inferno staff with nirnhoned and give it to one of my other characters to decon to learn the trait.
OR list the staff on a guild trader for 45k gold lol ;) /s

Why is it "greed" every time someone sells a rare item. It's basic economics. The more rare it is, the more valuable it becomes. Also pretty funny that you cry greed then end with flipping nirn for a profit. Just stop already.

To the OP: There are only a few ways to actully get Raw Nirn.

    1. Nirn itself only drops in Craglorn. There was a time where people heavily farmed it, that has certainly worn off. There was also a time where I high percent of crafting surveys (maybe all at one point, hard to remember) were in crag. Craglorn crafting surveys are great source of it. Simply mat farming in crag will generate it, but at a pretty slow rate. You can certainly farm gold and buy it faster.

    2. You can convert Transmutes into Nirn by trait changing an item in nirn and then deconstructing it. This might actually be a more reliable way to get it, especially if you are good at farming transmutes. I do not believe that reconstructing an item in nirn then deconning it will give you a nirn, at least it has not in my experience, so it will cost 50 transmutes for a roughly 50/50 shot at it.

    3. Some items do drop in nirn, but not all. These can be researched directly or decon'ed for the raw mat. I certainly don't have an exhaustive list, but for example, VMA weapons do. There is also a quest in upper crag that will give one randomly. That is basically the original root source of all the nirn weapons. When it launched, people researched whatever dropped for them, perhaps on multiple toons, than farmed raw nirn, and bartered and traded to get the rest from others.

    4. You buy it with gold from other players, the price is determined by the difficulty of obtaining it from 1-3.

If you have a friend with the research (happy to help on PC/NA), my guess is you are better off acquiring the nirn (even if you pay gold) and having them make you an item for research, than buying a specific nirn item from the trader, because whoever crafted it is going to mark it up to some degree. Most of us old timers have a few hundred in their craft bag.

The nirn craze at launch was real. I remember people camping single nodes in craglorn for days. I personally did the quest on multiple toons and bartered and traded to get my research complete. Then made a pretty penny making research items for people. Fortunately, it is easy to find someone that will do it for free these days as the craze is long gone.

The places that I am sure drop nirnhoned items are vma, vVH, and vss. I think vka and vrg also will, but I'm not positive.

Farming Nirncrack in Craglorn isn't as bad as it seems. It's more like a glorified public dungeon these days. The only areas which require a group to complete are certain quest bosses who are impossible to pass without group mechanics. Delves are completely solo-able but you won't even find nirncrux in those, they do grant skill points however.

Thanks for all of the info. Looks like I'll have to start braving Craiglorn.

I think you only get nirncrux drops if the character has at least rank 9 passive unlocked for Cloth, Ore, and Wood. I will do a quick search and see if I can find something about it.

EDIT: I cannot find a source for this but this detail really sticks with me, perhaps the rate goes up significantly if you have rank 9 or higher?
