When did it get toxic like this?

Well they just don't care? Not sure they need any reasons for that, nothing offensive here.

Umm...when someone tells you something and you reply I (or in this case no one) cares. That's being disrespectful despite your intentions. I'm shocked I have to explain this.

honestly OP, sometimes its just as simple as there being terrible people in the world. Some people just get off being terrible to others. Don't be mad at them. Pity them for having to live a life of constant misery.

ESO isn't somehow magically different from the rest of the universe. It has some nice people, it has some not nice people, it has some very immature people who blow up in flames when something doesn't go their way (quite a bit of that last sort, I would even say). Can't say I've noticed it getting significantly worse - or significantly better - lately. But then there is the current world-wide situation causing more stress for everyone so suppose people are more likely to let that stress spill out in games or otherwise.

But speaking of good teamplay...surely you did drop from that BG when you realized you'd just be a burden to your team because your mouse died, right?

I think some people are missing the point. Its not the words themselves, but no one with a brain would misunderstand that its just a creative way of saying "[snip] you". Why else would you respond like that. Its not hard to see that OP was just trying to give a headsup, and there's no reason to respond that way unless you just want to be a jerk for the sake of it.

That's the essence of the problem. Some people are used to it and don't mind it, after years of exposure to crappy behaviour in other MMOs or 4chan culture or whatever. But no one actually enjoys people who are supposed to be your team mates mouthing off. I mean, we could all just stop making the effort to be decent and reasonable and just start mouthing off at people, trying to make the experience as nasty as you can and we just end up with a cesspool.

The question is essentially Game Theory: why should I catch myself, be patient, not mouth off at people, or just be chill when others aren't going to bother. I see people making mistakes and slowing me down or getting in my way aaaaall the time. But I just chill and be excellent to people because I expect others to behave the same way. When that expectation is unrealistic, what reason remains to show restraint?

I agree most people are reasonably decent, you just get some [snip] that get off on the freedom from consequence their anonymity gives. In light of people going on and on about how wonderful and mature this community is, there's nothing wrong with people contributing their own experience when it might not follow that narrative.

We have been surrounded by increasing toxicity in our daily lives, no wonder it spills over into social games and feeds.

I find it very ironic that the more "tolerant" our society becomes, the more toxic it also becomes.

its because we keep tolerating intolerance. also known as the tolerance paradox.

When did it get toxic??? Ha ha. Been going on since game first launched. There have always been toxic players and less-than-pleasant conversations on ESO. It is the nature of MMO and social media. All kinds of different people playing the game. I stopped playing the game with text chat on many, many moons ago because of the constant toxicity from players on both zone and guild chats.

I mean, PvP in general are full of small children mad at someone being better than them. Not just in ESO. Since I usually never do PvP, I've never witnessed a toxic person once besides the fact when I tried out Imperial City.

Exactly, thank you! Many Times I get compliments like "thanks for the healing and resing" " GG mate" and so on. So that has fueled me to be even a better teamplayer. I don't wanna brag but I know that valuable for the team and for me it's simple math. If I can keep one alive by healing, resing and "tanking" for him I will most likely give him more opportunities to improve his K/D ratio and thus feeding his "solo deathmatch" career or whatever one should call it.

Yeh it really shows that you don't know the eso pvp community at all. We make friends, usually everyone is 30+ years and we have fun and we are ok with seeing someone better, only makes us want to get better too. Maybe in bgs it's pve people doing daily bg?
